Amnesty International USA Welcomes Announcement of Senate Human Rights Commission

WASHINGTON

Following the announcement of the Senate-based John S. McCain III Human Rights Commission, Margaret Huang, executive director of Amnesty International USA had the following response:

"The announcement of this commission is a much-welcomed signal that Congress is committed to upholding human rights. It's fitting that this announcement comes on Human Rights Day, on the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The UDHR is just as vital a document today as it was when it was created, and we look forward to working closely with the commission to uphold the ideals of the UDHR and create a more just world for all."

The McCain Human Rights Commission will join the House of Representatives-based Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission as a Congressional body dedicated to upholding human rights around the world.

Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), who announced establishing the commission along with Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), will speak about the commission at a human rights coalition event, led by Amnesty International USA, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the UDHR on Capitol Hill tonight.
