WASHINGTON

Today, the House passed S. 181, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of
2009
, legislation correcting the Supreme Court's
decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear
that limited a worker's ability to be fully compensated for
discrimination. Following passage of the bill, People For the American
Way President Kathryn Kolbert expressed appreciation for members'
standing up for justice for American workers:

"As the saying goes, 'score one for the
little guy.' Thousands of workers who face pay discrimination now
have an opportunity to seek justice. I applaud members of the House, and
their colleagues in the Senate, for standing up for the rights of all
Americans, and President Obama for his steadfast support of this legislation
and of Lilly Ledbetter. Thanks to George Bush's appointments, the
Supreme Court ignored the principle of equal justice under law. I'm
glad that Congress took the opportunity to strike a blow for basic
fairness."

People For the American Way works to build a democratic society that implements the ideals of freedom, equality, opportunity and justice for all. We encourage civic participation, defend fundamental rights, and fight to dismantle systemic barriers to equitable opportunity. We fight against right-wing extremism and the injustice it fosters.
