WASHINGTON

The Senate today passed the Lilly
Ledbetter Fair Pay Act
, legislation that will correct the Supreme
Court's decision in Ledbetter v.
Goodyear
which severely restricted women's ability to be
compensated for discrimination.

People For the American Way President Kathryn Kolbert issued the
following statement:

"Passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is good news for all
Americans. Victims of illegal discrimination deserve to be compensated,
and this legislation means that their cases will be able to move forward.
As the first piece of legislation to pass in the Senate under the Obama
Administration, this sends a strong message that this country will no longer
tolerate inequity in the workplace.

"The Senate was right to correct the deeply flawed decision that
the Supreme Court made in 2007. Under the Bush administration, the Court
has lurched dangerously to the right. This is just another example of why
it's so important to confirm fair-minded jurists to the bench and oppose
those who bring a political agenda to the Court."

People For the American Way works to build a democratic society that implements the ideals of freedom, equality, opportunity and justice for all. We encourage civic participation, defend fundamental rights, and fight to dismantle systemic barriers to equitable opportunity. We fight against right-wing extremism and the injustice it fosters.
