Sunrise Movement Endorses Climate Champion Mandela Barnes for US Senate

WASHINGTON -

Today, Sunrise Movement endorsed progressive climate candidate Mandela Barnes for U.S. Senate in Wisconsin, and announced plans to throw down for the candidate in the fall.

“Each year it is more clear just how broken our political system is, and how much we need committed members of the community like Mandela Barnes leading the way to rebuild a system that works for all of us,” said Michele Weindling, Sunrise Movement’s Electoral Director. “As a community organizer, a proven climate advocate, and the son of a union family, Mandela knows the struggles that young and working people are facing, and will fight like hell for us. Meanwhile Senator Ron Johnson opposes same-sex marriage and aided the January 6th insurrection. The stakes are too high to sit this out. We are calling on young people everywhere to fight for Mandela Barnes, a climate and anti-corruption leader.”

Sunrise will be supporting Barnes to defeat Senator Ron Johnson by making thousands of dials and texts to young people across the state. We are also running a relational organizing campaign in Wisconsin that will train young people to organize their friends, family, neighbors, and workplaces to vote in this election. We are also ensuring that all young and working class people’s voter registration is up to date and that they have a voting plan come November.

Already this cycle, Sunrise helped power Greg Casar to a win with nearly 60% of the vote in a crowded primary in TX-35, and proved people power can overcome big money in PA-12 with Summer Lee’s victory. Sunrise Movement also helped Squad members win their primaries across the country. Despite the millions of dark money SuperPACs getting involved in these races, Sunrise made over 1 million voter contacts this cycle already.
