New Poll: Majority of Voters Oppose GOP Attempts to Push Through Ultraconservative Supreme Court Nominee

Seven in 10 voters oppose Republicans changing rules to prevent filibuster

WASHINGTON

A new national poll released today finds that a majority of Americans think President Trump's Supreme Court nominee will have a real impact on the future of the country, and that they overwhelmingly oppose Republican attempts to strongarm an ultraconservative nominee on to the bench. According to the poll, which was conducted on behalf of NARAL Pro-Choice America, Every Voice and End Citizens United, 72 percent of voters think the next Supreme Court justice will have a big impact on the direction of our country. Seven in 10 voters oppose Republican attempts to change filibuster rules so that a simple majority could confirm Trump's nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch.

According to the poll, voters report they are more likely to oppose Gorsuch when they hear about issues that he could have an impact on, such as:

  • Upholding the Citizens United decision that allows special interests to spend unlimited money on elections.
  • Overturning the Roe v. Wade decision that made abortion legal.
  • Failing to protect voting rights and make it more difficult for Americans, particularly low-income people and people of color, to vote.

The poll also reaffirms that 7 in 10 voters support legal abortion. President Trump has promised over and over again to appoint Supreme Court justices who will work to overturn Roe v. Wade.

It finds that Americans reject the idea of a nominee who opposes limits on the amount of money wealthy donors and corporations can spend on politics. Seventy-eight percent of voters are more likely to oppose a nominee who will continue to allow corporations and special interests to use money to gain influence and drown out the voice of individuals in politics.

For over 50 years, Reproductive Freedom for All (formerly NARAL Pro-Choice America) has fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom at the federal and state levels—including access to abortion care, birth control, pregnancy and post-partum care, and paid family leave—for everybody. Reproductive Freedom for All is powered by its more than 4 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion.
