Blacks Must Confront Their Homophobia
''The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.''
-- Martin Luther King, Jr.
That's for Marion Barry, who seems to need the reminder.
The former mayor and current city councilman of Washington, D.C. is a longtime supporter of gay rights. So observers were stunned last week when a bill committing the city to recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere passed the council on a vote of 12-1.
The ''one'' was Barry.
Wait, it gets worse. Barry said his position hasn't changed but warned that the council needs to move slowly on this issue. ''All hell is going to break loose,'' Barry said. ''We may have a civil war. The black community is just adamant against this.'' Indeed, after the vote, a group of black ministers reportedly ''stormed'' the hallway outside the council chambers, vowing political reprisals.
The Washington Post quotes Barry as saying he voted as he did because ''I am representing my constituents.'' He reminded reporters that ``98 percent of my constituents are black, and we don't have but a handful of openly gay residents.''
That's a lot of words to say what he could have said in three: I punked out.
There's something to be said for representing one's constituents. But there is more to be said for leading them. Barry's failure to understand the difference is galling in light of the fact that he was once a leader in the civil-rights movement.
One wonders how differently that movement might have turned out had white people such as Clifford Durr, Viola Liuzzo, Ralph McGill, Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and Lyndon Johnson allowed themselves to be cowed by the angry voices of white men and women saying, ''All hell is going to break loose.'' For that matter, how much longer might the long night of slavery have lasted had white people like Elijah Lovejoy, William Lloyd Garrison, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Lucretia Mott and Thaddeus Stevens bowed to the fact that the white community was ''just adamant'' against freedom.
One wonders, too, whether those black ministers in the hall see their mirror image in generations of white ministers who have used the Bible to condone the evil of slavery (''Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters.'') and the fiction of African-American inferiority (the ''curse'' of Ham).
At day's end, though, the great tragedy here is neither historical amnesia nor moral cowardice. No, the tragedy is embodied in Barry's description of African Americans as a people for whom open homosexuality is rare. That description is, unfortunately, too accurate -- not simply for black Washington, but for black America. We are a socially conservative people.
And our conservatism is, quite literally, killing us.
It is no coincidence the community that has yet to make a safe place for its gay members to openly be who they are, the community that still regards gay as a dirty secret not to be spoken in open company, the community in which people still think gay ''can't happen in my family,'' is also the community that accounts for half of all AIDS diagnoses in this country, the community that has lost 211,000 brothers and sisters to this disease, the community where marriages keep popping like balloons from the discovery that the husband is gay on the ``down low.''
The measure of a man, said Dr. King, is where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Marion Barry should take note. We all should.
Where sexuality is concerned, African America lives by lies. We are long overdue to wake up, grow up and speak up to tell the truth openly and without fear. We are dying in this silence.
And for what it's worth, Martin's measurement still applies.

Show All1st off, kudos to the DC city council for supporting this. i live in arlington, walking distance from DC. 2nd, marion barry? gimme a break. you could demonstrate anything you want from his sordid life.
and i think homophobia in the black community is somewhat overstated. like in the prop 8 calif. thing a bit back. lots of blame for the black community, most of it undeserved.
and is Pitts suggesting there is some correlation b/n homophobia and HIV infection among blacks? wow. quite a pernicious statement. i could think of about 10 other much more important factors.
The prop 8 thing was grossly overstated. The African American vote didn't matter really in Prop 8. That doesn't change that the African American community does have an issue with homophobia.
And Pitts does lay out that issue honestly, if painfully so. Pitts is himself African American.
As for what in your opinion is a pernicious statement, the argument is that there is a perception that HIV is a gay disease. And that if you are not gay, well, you won't contract HIV. And oh yeah, and being "on the down low", isn't really being gay. So that doesn't matter, and won't result in HIV.
Gay men who are self-accepting and out of the closet are much better able to educate themselves and each other about AIDS and much more able/likely to practice safe sex. A negative self-image (internalized homophobia), and a community that enforces closetedness, a community which makes the price for coming out of the closet impossibly high - these are indeed factors that increase the likelihood of HIV infection among gay men.
CA's not all Castro Street. Californians voted in Reagan, Nixon, and Schwarzenator.
Yes but, California is also the last stop before the Pacific Ocean.
If Marion Barry had any balls he would have voted for what is right; in stead of that, he pandered to the homophobic members of his constituency. Being black and and coming out with lame excuses like these is the most stupid thing he could have done. A minority of whites fought for the blacks in a period that it was considered not to be done. I'm not saying he owes any other minority anything because of this, but next time he'd better use his brain - if he has one.
It is stupid and lame and cowardly not just for the historical reasons, that whites helped in the fight for civil rights. As the author points out, it is stupid and lame and cowardly because it does a HUGE disservice to African American GLBTs.
Equal rights for all, period. No more, no less.
Snorting coke off a hooker's ass crack is fine & respectable for
MarionBerry... But equal rights for consenting adults...? Oooh... The horror...!
I certainly hope you're not suggesting there is anything wrong with snorting coke off a hooker's ass crack. It's the american way.
That's laugh-out-loud funny!
Thanks
Christianity, originally a tool used to assist with controlling African slaves, has become such a force in African American communities, and along with christianity always comes sexual repression which includes fear of sexual or gender expression outside of the status quo.
The sad thing is that many African Americans are offended when the struggle for liberation by GLBTQ people is likened to the struggle for civil rights by and for people of color.
Oppression is oppression. Liberation is liberation. If the ministers stopped preaching hatred, this attitude among African Americans would gradually shift. Look to the pulpit, especially in this instance, for the roots of hypocrisy and bigotry.
Originally for controlling African slaves? Do you mean in Roma?
I fought actively for both the LGBT and Civil Rights causes in the 1960's and 1970's and found a large overlap of the two. I think that homophobia itself is a disease of ignorance that education and real information helps mitigate. I think that homophobia and racism are the same, and are diseases of the ignorant. Let’s face it, people of color have less access to information and education than others because of economic discrimination. So the enemy is really economic policies that push wealth upward. If conservatives are blamed more than liberals for this, I don’t see a surprise or overtly partisan motive here, because this insidious kleptocracy is the Republican way. There is only one thing more self destructive than a poor Republican, and that is a gay Republican. In fact, the existence of so many rich gay conservative (expletive deleted) pushed me away from the LGBT movement and into the general fight for economic rights. When I have run into homophobia among people of color, usually a bit of real information corrects this. There is too much similarity between anti-black and anti-gay bigotry for many people to ignore if presented with facts. Neither African genes nor gay genes constitute a majority in the USA, so the humane principle of a democratic society defending and protecting harmless minorities applies to both. Marion Barry needs to remember this before allowing a majority of a minority (if this is what it really is, and I have my doubts because I have met many more NON homophobic African Americans than discriminatory ones) to commit rank hypocrisy. The real truth is that if anyone is oppressed in a society, everyone is oppressed. Bigotry is always wrong. Any statement of human rights that includes ethnicity, but not the rest of the list of groups that suffer discrimination, is no fairer than good, old-fashioned racism. Diversity appears to be part of the human genome. It is not just a good idea, it is the law.
I'm with you on being appalled at rich, gay right-wingers. The most right-wing person I ever met was a gay white male, and he was so racist - in a blatant, pro-Klan way - that he used his PhD in sociology to gain a position in the Texas prison system so he could prevent as many Blacks as possible from ever being freed from jail or prison, innocent or not. He claimed all Blacks should be imprisoned, and this was in the 90s. He was also against anti-discrimination laws and anti-hate crime laws for gays because, he said, "The government shouldn't be involved." Not surprisingly, he was also a big fan of Rush Limbaugh. He didn't hate Blacks for being homophobic; he hated them simply out of gut-level racist revulsion and would make up all kinds of reasons for his innate disgust toward them. He was also gleefully anti-environmental, pro-military slaughter, anti-public education, anti-feminist, and a Reagan worshiper. In short, a disgrace to humanity but kinda normal for Texas. Last I heard, he was now a counselor in private practice in some Texas suburb. Like you, I've known far more non-homophobic Blacks than homophobic ones, but I'll never again assume that a white gay is progressive-minded or intelligent simply because he's a member of an oppressed group.

DEANG: How is it remotely possible an individual can obtain a ph.D in sociology and retain the attitudes and beliefs of a Neanderthal at best? The guy is a classic ass hole, but giving such a one credentials? Sociology as I studied it seems to create empathy on the basis of learning things about other cultures and their socialization processes. This guy, no doubt a born authoritarian, must have skimmed over all the data and used it ONLY to substantiate the narrow view that his background (White American) is all that counts.
Homophobia's not the only problem, hypocrisy's also a factor. As a gay man, I've encountered my share of married black men in search of man-to-man action through the years. These are sorry, tragic types who are not really homophobic, but sociopaths and cheats of the ultimate kind.
As for the rest, more than 90% of blacks fell for the Obama fraud, didn't they? And they will stand by the man even with evidence of his utter corruption starring them in the face. I don't think the level of intelligence in question will allow homophobia to go away from the community anytime soon.
And their religion is just a convenient excuse for them to be and act stupid.
Not quite sure why you're dragging the President in on this, as he has clearly "Crossed the Rubicon" on DADT. I'll simply chalk it up to him not moving fast enough with the powers of the Executive Office at his disposal for your taste.
I will, however, agree with the hypocritical nature of especially Black men and sexual orientation. Sociopathic is not inaccurate. Fronting as Proto-Heteros simply because they are not "being invaded" (that's a turn of phrase I heard a few years ago) says something both about them and their view of their chosen victims - willing or unwilling- and is at minimum reprehensible if you ask me.
I also want to point out that we aren't the only minority group that practices this deception. I see the exact same behaviors in the Hispanic and South Asian communities.
I cannot say this is "simply acting" stupid under the cover of religion. This is wrecklessly handling a (potentially) deadly weapon.
Not sure why I'm dragging the president in on this? Maybe because he's a black man and this article's about blacks?
Maybe because Obama's a traitor of the gay community (Obama Breaks Campaign Promise on AIDS; Obama Caving on Gays in the Military) and despite his corruption, blacks will support him regardless, just because he's black? Such stupidity and blindness are perfect breeding ground for homophobia, hypocrisy and other social maladies, that's why I'm dragging him in. Also, this article's about blacks, saying that you "see the exact same behaviors in the Hispanic and South Asian communities" doesn't change anything or excuse your community.
By the way, DADT won't be overturned. It won't be Obama's first time lying though, so relax.
It is the purpose of religion, as evidenced by both history and current events, to make people "be and act stupid."
Sometimes I wished progressives and liberals would answer the following question:
Despite Asian Americans and some of their setbacks and lack of affirmative action, why are they still happy while African Americans are not?
As I'm trying to cure my life's tensions of worry and unhappiness, sometimes I think women and minorities have lost their power to believe in themselves and that somewhere MLK's spiritual message just did not resonate. MLK, Lincoln, Gandhi, Nader, and even Mckinney are my favorites since I think that they influenced my life and thinking and made me take courage seriously. I know I still have a long ways to go with clearing up unhappiness in life but maybe if more women and minorities looked at them in spiritual terms, we might unlock the secret of the happiness that seldom dies down in Asian Americans even in their darkest days.
Oh, come on! Did you get out a happy-o-meter and measure this? Maybe the African-Americans are talking to you more directly.
I've met plenty of Afros of all kinds of behavior out in St Louis City. Trust me.
Are you sure Asians are so happy? There is plenty of depression and family violence among Asians.
But your point about healing the spirit and overcoming the psychological legacy of past injury is a good one.
Joe
I am well aware of the rising number of depressed Asian Americans out there and the VA Tech shooting tragedy is a strong sign of that. I was discussing in terms of most Asian Americans overall compared to most African Americans and even women in general.
Get off your Lilly White Christ asses and grow up, black America. I'm ashamed of you. If anyone should know what oppression is like, it should be the descendants of slaves. If you are not ignorant and inferior like your KKK oppressors claim, prove it!
In response to acemoab saying that the presence of so many rich gays led to him/her joining the general fight for economic freedom, I say: I experienced the same aversion to such wealth, and followed the same track as you, fighting for economic justice. It is also not difficult to connect racism and homophobia as emanating from the same ignorance, perpetuated by our MSM that incites division among the masses with their untruths and resultant hysteria. To be blissfully uninformed is the mission for MSM and the educational system, and the black community is all the worse for it. I also love your statement, "There is only one thing more self destructive than a poor Republican, and that is a gay Republican." I can never understand someone who would vote against their own self-interests, either economic, social, etc.,but that's what got us eight years of a Repug President. (I can't even type his name.) Great post!
Identity politics are an awesome idea, as this article and thread show.
I "hope" that's thick sarcasm, in which case I wholeheartedly agree.
The country must be in great shape, if this pitiful article and thread is the best thing we have to worry about.
Some of interesting posts.. most of which completely miss key points.
1st, for Bible believer's, the notion of homosexuality as connected to Godliness is not an accurate assessment of being Christ-like, period. It never has been and never can be.
That said, it is incumbent upon practicing Christian's of which MLK was not (wait for FBI release of is serial-infidelity recordings), that they should hate the sin & not the sinner. Many times that's easier said than done, for this requires a level of spiritual maturity that is NOT common.
2nd, for the worldly, homo-hating is an easy preoccupation for it carries no perceived risks, however, it can also be a mask for secret deep-seated desires to engage in same-sex behavior and/ or mask other peculiar personality traits centered exclusively around fear.
Blacks who aren't gay but believe that gay people deserve basic civil rights that are afforded all citizens, myself among them, are put off at the suggestion that gays & Blacks share a common struggle because Blacks cannot modify their skin colour while gay people have the choice to be gay.
Blacks who might otherwise be allies to the gay rights cause are put off by persistent demands to acknowledge a union between same-sex pairs as marriage.
If gays would lose that specific language and accept the equivalent without specifying the word marriage, they would find more Black allies to the gay civil rights cause.
3rd, and unescapable in the Black community, is that racism plays a role that cannot be overstated in 'turning' Black men into homosexuals due to the lucrative business of incarceration. There's likely a larger percentage of gay/ bisexual people in the Black community than perhaps all other groups as a result of this policy and they feel compelled to mask their down-low adventures by adopting vocal anti-gay rhetoric.
There you have it.
I find I've really only hated sinners and non-sinners too. I've never hated a sin, and really it doesn't make sense to direct your hate towards a sin. How can you hate a sin?
Also, I once heard Obama claim that he was not in favor of gay marriage, because God was "there" in his marriage with his wife; that is the three of them are together in the union which apparently god enters voluntarily if the opportunity presents.
But by implication, he is suggesting that God does not join up in a same sex relationship? Where ever did he get that idea? How does he know? Another president with inside info I guess.
lawbfree:
Since you've already been schooled regarding your ignorant notion that Gays choose their orientation I'll simply inform you of another issue you seem unaware of. Gays wish to use the word "marriage" because all the laws on the books regarding legal marriage use the word "marriage". It would just complicate the law to try and use "civil union" instead. BTW, I thought Blacks understood that the concept of SEPARATE BUT EQUAL is fraudulent.
"BTW, I thought Blacks understood that the concept of SEPARATE BUT EQUAL is fraudulent."
Good one.
If sexual preference is a choice, how is it that a whopping 90% choose heterosexual? I suppose they weigh the pro's and con's and a huge majority throw their lot in with the mixed sex couples.
Me thinks that they protest too much......
"The only means of strengthening one's intellect is to make up one's mind about nothing, to let the mind be a thoroughfare for all thoughts." - John Keats
The author call Barry a coward but isn't what he did just what the author of this story says leaders should do??????
I quote, "The measure of a man, said Dr. King, is where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Marion Barry should take note. We all should."
To stand against the queer tide is “standing in times of challenge and controversy”.
No... Just look at how Ms California is being treated for stating her “opinion” based on her “religious beliefs” and only then when asked a direct question by a Gay Activist.
I am no Barry fan. The fact that he was reelected is a stain on all in DC. But even he can be right some of the time and this is one of them. He is showing courage and he is leading. He is standing up... Standing up for the beliefs of those he represents. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT?
And when did homosexual behavior become the same disadvantage as being black?????
As many have stated….. I have met several former homosexuals but I’ve yet to meet a former black.
michael Jackson... He is a former black man...
"I am no Barry fan. The fact that he was reelected is a stain on all in DC. But even he can be right some of the time and this is one of them. He is showing courage and he is leading. He is standing up... Standing up for the beliefs of those he represents. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT?"
What's wrong with it is the following:
1) The beliefs he's standing up for are wrong. There's nothing admirable about standing up for discrimination against gay people. If standing up for a wrong belief is admirable then by that standard, Dick Cheney standing up for torture has to be admirable as well.
2) When Barry does stand up for homophobia, he hands some white so-called liberals that actually hate black people a huge weapon they can use against black people in general. He's basically putting all black people on the hook for his own stupidity (that is, more than he's already made a career out of doing so).
3) It's generally become more accepted (as hard fought as it is) that being homosexual as far as how the brain functions is just as immutable as skin coloration. This started changing I think in the 60's, and there's a lot more scientific evidence for this now than when thinking really started changing over this issue. Although it's not as hardwired as breathing or a reflex, it also isn't a choice either.
