Americans Favor Probe of 'War on Terror' Excesses
WASHINGTON - Two-thirds of Americans favor investigating whether the George W. Bush administration overstepped legal boundaries in its "war on terror," according to a poll released Thursday by USA Today and Gallup.
A majority of respondents said a probe should be launched into allegations that the Bush team used torture to interrogate terror suspects.
Investigators also should look into the former president's program of wiretapping US citizens without first securing court-issued warrants, respondents said.
About four respondents in 10 polled by USA Today (38 percent) favored criminal investigations, while about a quarter (24 percent) said they want an investigation without criminal charges being filed.
Some one-third of those polled (34 percent) said they want nothing done at all, the pollsters said.
The survey comes as the American Civil Liberties Union and other rights groups press for formal inquiries into whether the Bush administration flouted US and international laws banning torture and the constitutional right to privacy.
The group said in a statement that it plans to mount a campaign next week urging the public to press lawmakers "to fully investigate the US government?s abuses in the war on terror and hold accountable those responsible."
"The human rights organization is calling on President Barack Obama and the US Congress to create an independent and impartial commission to examine the use of torture, indefinite detention, secret renditions and other illegal US counterterrorism policies," the Amnesty statement added.
Two leading Democrats, House Judiciary Committee chairman John Conyers and Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy has proposed commissions to investigate possible Bush administration violations.
Bush's successor President Barack Obama, at a press conference this week expressed reticence about a probe, saying it was time to move forward.
But he did not rule out possible prosecutions, adding "my view is also that nobody is above the law. And if there are clear instances of wrongdoing, that people should be prosecuted just like any ordinary citizen." And he said he would look at Leahy's proposals.
The telephone survey of 1,027 adults, taken between January 30 and February 1, had a plus or minus three percent sampling error.

The law of the US is to be applied EQUALLY to all, no matter their wealth or status. Former Los Angeles District Attorney Vincent Bugliosi (who prosecuted the Manson Family) has clearly outlined how the Bush administration is guilty of murder, amidst other charges.
Therefore Congress must either:
(1) Release all prison inmates, including those guilty of murder, and drop all other prosecutions.
(2) Put the involved members of the Bush administration on trial.
(3) Publicly, outrightly admit that this is no longer the United States of America, and that the US Constitution and Bill of Rights are null and void.

Change the last word in the headline to incarcerated.
WE'VE been getting "probed" for the last eight years. It's time the tables were turned.
Deepa
Prosecution of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice... is a good beginning in the right direction in the US. However, I do not understand why International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued a warrant to arrest the president of Sudan for violence against humanity, is silent about the genocidal violence of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Powell... in Iraq, Afghanistan.... This shows how the so-called "International Organisations" like UN, ICC are hand-in-glove with the US (and EU).
Along with the prosecution of the American war criminals, US should also close down the torture training facilities on its soil such as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHISC)at Fort Benning, Georgia. This institute is the Defense Department’s main Spanish language training facility. It says that it trains civilian, military and law enforcement students and holds the promotion of democracy at the core of its mission.
However, George Monbiot links this school to terrorism by giving details of its numerous atrocities. He contends that "the evidence linking the school to continuing atrocities in Latin America is rather stronger than the evidence linking the al-Qaeda training camps to the attack on New York." Some of the alumni have been the most brutal military dictators and human rights violators in Latin America over the past five decades: Manuel Noriega and Omar Torrijos of Panama, Anastasio Somoza of Nicaragua; Leopoldo Galtieri of Argentina; Generals Hector Gramajo and Manuel Antonio Callejas of Guatemala, Hugo Banzer Suarez of Bolivia, and the El Salvador death-squad leader Roberto D'Aubuisson.
Training manuals used in courses cover methods of political control and interrogation that includes torture.
What about the CIA activities? Philip Agee, a CIA officer for 12 years and a whistleblower of CIA criminal activities in his books "Inside the Company: CIA Diary" and "On the Run", wrote: "It was a time in the ’70s when the worst imaginable horrors were going on in Latin America. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Guatemala, El Salvador—they were military dictatorships with death squads, all with the backing of the CIA and the US government."
Philip Agee admitted, "I was myself involved in some of these activities. I worked, for example, with the police in Latin American countries, and they were often involved in torture. I remember one Sunday morning in the office of the chief of police during a state of siege in Montevideo. My boss, the CIA chief of station in Uruguay was present, along with the local army colonel in charge of anti-riot forces. We began to hear a low moaning coming through the walls and, at first, I thought it was a street vendor outside. But then it became clear that it was someone being tortured in another part of the building. As this horrible sound became louder and louder, the police chief told the colonel to turn up a radio in order to drown out the groans and screams."
So what Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld... did is not an aberration. US history is filled with such activities. Americans never questioned those activities nor talked about "prosecution" of their leaders then. As long as the American criminal activities around the world have resulted in making the life of Americans prosperous, majority of Americans overtly and covertly supported them. Now because of the economic crisis and the resultant pain and agony in the life of Americans, they are talking about "prosecuting" their political leaders.
Nice post, Deepa. It's nice to see that there are some out there that have a clue about the extent of this obscene saga that has taken place over the past eight years, and longer...
Well said, Deepa February 12th, 2009 5:50 pm, and a good brief history.
I recall a year or so ago hearing on the radio a lawyer from the ICC in The Hague talking about the warrant out on Rumsfeld and why they weren't also issuing warrants for Bush and Cheney, et al. He said something to the effect of wanting to arrest and 'turn' Rumsfeld so that he would testify against Junior and Dick but, if that wasn't feasible, to wait until they were out of office, unless the new US Atty General took action first. It's only February, so maybe something's coming yet from the ICC, depending on what Holder does.
Count me in. Investigate the bastard.

As long as no one is punished for doing evil, there is every incentive for repeating the behavior.
It is essential to the restoration of our national reputation, our dignity and our pride that investigations into war profiteering as well as torture be undertaken. It is essential that future would be dictators and usurpers understand that they will also be prosecuted for their future crimes.

From the article: "Some one-third of those polled (34 percent) said they want nothing done at all, the pollsters said."
Who are these people? Did they do part of this survey with members of the Bush and Cheney families? Did they conduct it outside of RNC headquarters? My unofficial, unscientific 'barroom' poll shows that 9 out of 10 people (I only asked 10) want these characters investigated and prosecuted, and the 1 out of 10 who didn't want the investigation wanted them all deported to Anarctica for life without a trial.
Agence France Presse sez: " ... about a quarter (24 percent) said they want an investigation without criminal charges being filed."

Fourteen months from now:
"Our investigation has revealed solid evidence of widespread criminal activities by numerous members of the Bush administration, across a wide spectrum of statutes. Further, we have documented repeated abuses of the U.S. Constitution by former president Bush, vice-president Cheney and many others in key leadership positions.
"However, this commission's mandate includes no provision for prosecution or even accountability. Therefore, U.S. citizens reading this report are urged to forget everything herein contained, and to do so immediately.
Be assured that all future fascist coups will be treated in the same swift, harsh and decisive manner.

this is a red herring.
rather than a probe into excesses of the war on terror, there needs to be a probe into the causes and origin of the war on terror.
it is the attacks of 9/11 that have to be investigated. that will be the true test of the obama adminstration.
that is far more important than this. more damning and more painful, but far, far more important.
I agree, I have no doubts about what the PNAC and the Pentagon had to do with 9/11. (I still think about the courtroom dialogue on the 10th of September, where the Pentagon was supposed to explain where the missing $3 trillion could be, and the Pentagon representative said, "Can't we talk about this tomorrow?" knowing that something else, "tomorrow," would divert attentions elsewhere.)
However, the war crimes, and charges of the murder of 4,500 US service[people] due to lies intentionally orchestrated in order to gain approval for war, are the place to start. Once these people have been found publicly, indubitably the criminals they are, then we'll have more access to their finances, communications, and other evidence concerning 9/11. It's not as if many of us would need much more evidence than the plethora that is commonly distributed in order to convict them for 9/11, but there's clearly something wrong with our system. Starting these investigations will hopefully give some strength to truth and the citizen.

Notice that this dispatch is from Agence France. No US media conglomerate will bother reporting on it. If 99% wanted them investigated MSM would remain silent. They've protected these bastards since the day they first stole the White House. The only prosecution of the Bush junta will come, if it ever comes at all, from foreign countries, if they can manage to somehow extradite the criminals, which will be next to impossible. We'll be left with their murderous blood on our hands because our Congress and the Obama administration won't act. Our genius president only wants to "move forward," recommending amnesia for the entire country. He's trashing the Constitution by not moving forward with criminal investigations and prosecution, but his predecessor already did that so he's just keeping tradition. So we'll remain a rogue state, and when it all collapses most of us will still be blaming someone else. The Taliban! Al-Qaeda! Anyone but us.
Throw them to the wolves would be good but in a nation of sheep, where do you find someone to do it?

LOL -- let's hope Obama turns out to be just that. He has said repeatedly that if any past administration has been found to have committed crimes, they will be investigated and prosecuted, and now he has Holder to take the heat, so he can continue to play the 'Good Cop.'

So?
"And if there are clear instances of wrongdoing, that people should be prosecuted just like any ordinary citizen." And he said he would look at Leahy's proposals."
I did not hear, but simply read Leahy's proposals in the email I received. There could have been more in the video which I didn't watch but here is what I found in written form within that email:
"A truth and reconciliation commission would be tasked with seeking answers. It would provide Congress and the American people with a shared understanding of the failures of the recent past, so we do not repeat them in the future."
Please note: There was no mention of holding anyone accountable for any criminal activity or "wrongdoing" as the authorities like to call it.
This was my response to that email:
Dear Senator Leahy:
Sadly, I cannot watch the video you included with this request because I am on internet dial-up.
I would however like to point out an article by Glenn Greenwald on this issue which was written in Feb. 2008. It pretty much sums up the state of affairs within the federal government.
Here's my take on a "Truth Commission": If the criminal aspects of this truth aren't going to be subject to the "rule of law", then don't waste taxpayer's money on creating this commission. In short, the truth of ruthless law-breakers has been exposed time and time again over many years by many different authors while Congress, since the Nixon years, has done nothing to stop it and has at times, enacted legislation to legalize some of the law-breaking as exemplified in the Greenwald article below.
Not only did we have "Amnesty Day for Bush and lawbreaking telecoms", but now we have "Amnesty Day for unprecedented Wall Street Fraud" which is not only responsible for the economic demise of this country, but which continues to go unchallenged by our Congressional leaders.
Bottom Line: Until Congress and Wall Street clean-up their act, don't expect the citizens of this country to trust either entity. We voted for change and that's what we expect from the people who are supposed to be representing us.
Yours truly,
(The Greenwald article can be found at: http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/02/12/amnesty_day/#postid-updateS1#postid-updateS1 )
I want investigation with prosecution of any crimes.
To do nothing is to acknowledge that those who consider themselves to be the 'elite' are above the law and that they cannot be held accountable for any criminal activity in which they take part. In short perpetuating the status quo. It seems to be just far far too rare to see anyone of those few that have more money than they will ever spend in a lifetime, to ever get caught and be punished for their crimes. I don't even think that if any of these 'elite' decided to shoot somebody because of what they had to say that they would be arrested. And all that comes under the idea that they are just TOO BIG and the the law does not pertain to them. Oviously it doesn't when it comes to the financial disaster we are living at the present.
But w & dick's administration definitely is in need of being investigated and brought to justice for any and all crimes committed. And one other part that needs investigation are those 5 supreme court justices(ardent federalists) that stopped the recount in 2000 of the florida vote when is showed that gore would overtake w, needs investigating and impeachment for crimes of the voting process.
After that, investigate 9/11.
One of the things that drives me nuts is all of the investigations into whether there might have been improprieties. Can they be considered criminal? And on and on. My alleged representative told me in 2006 that they had not been elected to stop the war or impeach the president, but to do important things like increasing the minimum wage a few cents an hour. Then he said he was not convinced the president had broken the law!
I sent him back just the portions of the Constitution and Bill of Rights that had been violated, with the violations. No answer. The next time I saw him at a function, he turned his back and walked away when I started to question him.
Please, somebody, explain to me. How, when a seventy plus year old man can read the Constitution, look at what has happened and come up with many many illegal actions, which are absolutely unconstitutional, can watch billion and trillion dollar thefts from the treasury of We the People, can see the environmental watchdogs be replaced with former CEO's of the agencies and cartels that were supposed to be regulated; how come they have to spend years and millions to look into the possibility that something "irregular" may have occurred? And then another few years pondering whether it was illegal? And then try to determine if the perps should be tried or excused and told not to do it again!
The way "justice" is doled out amongst the politicos of Washington DC, if I walked out to the pitcher's mound during the World Series and shot the shortstop in front of a hundred thousand people, I could walk away and what those people saw would be considered circumstantial evidence! The authorities would ponder for months or years whether it was an actual murder, or if the shortstop died of a heart attack at the same time I fired. There would be discussions as to whether bringing me to justice would serve any purpose and would it be worth the expense. Many committees would be convened to study these problems. Finally, as a very old man, I would be told I should be ashamed of myself and not to do it again.
I think Cindy Sheehan has it right, we have been buried buried in bullshit and horseshit so long that we no longer mind the taste and smell.
minitrue February 13th, 2009 2:54 am, I fully understand your frustration and let me give you my opinion in brief of the reasons the Democrats are so weak on these issues:
1) Some of the Dems are bought off just like the Republicans.
2) Others are intimidated by the GOP successes in the past, or believe that 'America is a center-right nation' hogwash to this day and are afraid of being voted out of their cushy, well-paid jobs in Congress.
3) Karl Rove, like his ideological and methodological predecessor J. Edgar Hoover, has been amassing secret files on every prominent member of Congress and the mass media, of the sort Hoover collected on MLK and others. As fictional Gov. Willie Stark said in Robert Penn Warren's "All the King's Men" referring to the skeltons in politicians' closets: "[T]here's something on everybody. Man is conceived in sin and born in corruption. He passes from the stink of the diddy to the stench of the shroud. There's ALWAYS something." Rove has made it his lifelong business, IMO, to find out that 'something' on anyone who might get in his way.
4) Dems noticed what happened to JFK when he set himself against the Military-Industrial Complex; the sudden 'disappearance' of Warren Commission member Rep. Hale Boggs (D-LA) when he began asking too many questions about JFK's death and called FBI chief Hoover a 'thug' in Congress [1]; and, of course, the mysterious death of Sen. Paul Wellstone 11 days before his almost-certain reelection in 2002, after he defied Cheney on the Iraq War vote [2]. As the article linked below states, "As The Nation said in May 2002, getting rid of Wellstone was a passion for Bush, Karl Rove, and Cheney." Wellstone's death also caused the Dems to lose their thin majority in the Senate and corrupt Bush Republican Norm Coleman took his seat.
[1] Hale Boggs http://everything2.com/e2node/Hale%2520Boggs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hale_Boggs
[2] "At a meeting full of war veterans in Willmar, Minn., days before his death, Wellstone told attendees that Cheney told him, 'If you vote against the war in Iraq, the Bush administration will do whatever is necessary to get you. There will be severe ramifications for you and the state of Minnesota.'"
-- Jackson Thoreau, "Was Wellstone Assassinated...?" OpEd News.
http://www.opednews.com/thoreau1203_wellstone_assassinated.htm
I guess they 'got him' and sent a clear message to the Dems -- get too far out of line and you're dead.
We can only hope with Obama and the shift in the nation against the GOP, that we'll gradually see some justice meted out to these monsters, but it may take a while for that to happen.
Yeah, I know. I was mainly being rhetorical to make a point. I spent several years investigating both of the Kennedy assassinations. What a cesspool we found. All protected of course. I think JFK was the original coup d'etat, and it was successful beyond their wildest dreams. It has been downhill ever since, but the perps pocketed the trillions over the years. Perhaps Bush was hubris and an Obamanation is the fallout.

AHH The French say also Equality could this be Equal voice power
Bring America Back !!!! The French press sampling is not a very large segment of people, and the percentage for investigating certainly would run to 90% in this Blog Bunch !!
The quote from Obama in the last 2 paragraphs is interesting in view of his Senate Vote to forgive Bush & Cheney, NSA & The Big Telecons, retroactively, for their felonious, wiretapping of Americans which they admitted violated the US Constitutional rights to Privacy !!!! Total immunity, no investigation !!
When it comes to past abuses, Obama's Chicago politics shows through, and he becomes Mr Back Off==we shall not do to others what they may do to us in the future !!! We are much too busy raiding the taxpayers Treasury giving away big bailouts !!
If Obama becomes forced to appoint a Truth Commission, it would be a mamby pamby luke warm bunch of bureaucrats or past dunces just like the 9/11 Commission. Almost impossible to get an independent Panel from the very culture of corruption which enabled Bushco for 8 years or more !!
Lets hope the good Senators Leahy and Conyers get Kucinich involved for sure and figure out how to get a truly independent Prosecutor==and NOT Patrick Fitzgerald--who allowed Scooter Libby to get away with Treason !
REMEMBER, the Bush Crimes did NOT start with the 2003 War on Terror--they started pre 9/11, and very much on Sept 11, 2001 !!!! In the words of the First Responders---"We will NEVER forget " !!!!
Actually the Bush crimes started with the theft of the 2000 election, which enabled the crimes of Sept 11, 2001. And they have continued unabated ever since, probably most recently with the death of cyberwhiz election thief Michael Connell when his private plane crashed (which we might re-dub "the Wellstone solution"). Failure to investigate and prosecute the stolen elections and the events of 911 will allow this black hole in our recent history to continue exist and suck all subsequent events and policies into its vacuum. This is what we've been seeing for the past eight years, and changing presidents won't help much if we don't get to the root cause. The stolen election of 2000 and 911 have affected politics and people's lives across the globe, and the world has a right to know what really happened. If we don't get started soon, and get the courts to protect some of the witnesses, they'll soon all go the way of Michael Connell and Barry Jennings (who was perhaps the most important witness to the early explosions in WTC7, and who died mysteriously last August).
Bring America Back !!!! Thank you Clovis, for spicing up my post.
The Neocons just could not deal with Barry Jennings documenting and testifying to hearing multiple explosions in Building 7, WTC, recording his observances of the stairwells being systematically demolished. All in the early morn around 9 or 10 am of 9/11, many even before the north tower fell. Thankfully, Jennings did record his testimony on 'Loose Change' dvd, and in many personal interviews, before he suddenly was no longer among the living !
****Also in the same vein, let me include the FBI's first Anthrax patsy==that researcher guy they tried to pin with mailing out the anthrax envelopes-- he sued them and won his lawsuit when they wouldn't stop prosecuting him falsely.
***Then, last year the FBI found their 2nd best Anthrax Patsy and threatened to
prosecute him; then again mysteriously he comitted suicide, sketchy details even his family won't discuss==so then they pin the letters on him ! So the FBI knows that there is nothing like a good 'Patsy', especially a dead Patsy== because that one sure won't be suing them back in Court !!
****The FBI and the Neocons spent about the last year of King George's reign covering up tracks, getting plausible denials, putting out disinformation to the media==like the NIST Study of Bldg 7 Fire==after 7 years !!.
****I have to laugh, since Osama seems to be an invisible boogieman, they used the military commission trials at GITMO to have their waterboarded and tortured prisoners admit to being the real "masterminds" of 9/11. Those poor Islamists would admit to anything so they can achieve martyrdom and get to Islam heaven with their 40 Virgins. Again, the very common use of 'Patsys' to explain away the real facts, the real truth of 9/11 !!
****We all can think of other 'Patsys' we've been treated to !! For example, who was the Patsy that supposedly had WMD's, Nuke ambitions, ties to al Qaeda, and of course can no longer speak out against the mother of all invasions !!!
**And another word for Patsy is the Goat,--as in make him the Goat for the crimes of somebody else, make him the Goat of the public's anger, contempt and criticisms.

It's amazing to me that so many people never grow up. The fact that about 1/3 of the pop wants nothing done, shows that they must view the presidency as a parental figure that can do no wrong. I feel sorry for people like that. I'll bet they never question authority.
I'm going to have to get back to my protests on Monday nights. My job has changed so as to make it difficult to make it in time before everyone leaves. But it's getting difficult for me to contain myself since not much seems to be getting done about Bush/Cheney crimes. But first and foremost, the reasons for going to war with Iraq should be the start of any investigation-and why anyone whould say to investigate but not for crimes or charge for crimes is just...
theinitiate February 13th, 2009 6:51 am:"It's amazing to me that so many people never grow up. What you say may be true, but keep in mind it's all in how the question is asked in these phone polls. For example, I know a couple of truck drivers who listen to Limbaugh when they're out on the road. If they were asked: "Do you listen to Rush Limbaugh on a regular basis," they'd reply, "Yes," and the poll would show them as Dittoheads. But that isn't the full truth. In fact, they think Rush is a fatuous, loudmouthed jerk and disagree completely with his politics -- they laugh at him, not with him. This kind of misinformation and disinformation is routine in poll results. It's all in the wording of the questions and how far you go in the questioning.
And then there's the notorious 'push-polling' perfected by Lee Atwater and used extensively by Karl Rove. "Would you vote for Candidate X if you discovered he didn't believe in God?" "Would you vote for Candidate Y if you found out he was sexually abusing his children?" Of course, Candidate X is a regular churchgoer, and Candidate Y doesn't have any children, but that's not the point -- the point is to make voters wonder why someone would even ask that question and jump to the conclusion that the question must reflect some hidden truth. Sadly, it often works. Polling is an industry filled with vipers, most with an axe to grind.
Who knows -- maybe some of these people were asked if Bush and Cheney should be investigated and prosecuted for doing their best to defeat terrorism and keep the country safe.
Lord knows the trials and tribulations I have experienced for supporting
Obamas run for presisdent since Dec 2007'
There were days when I thought the Stazi Republican religeous lunatic spy machine was going to run me off the road .
It was worth the pain and torture, every time I see and here President Obama speak I feel proud to be an American.
America has an intellectual community that has awakened and refuse to live in fear controlled by the lunatic right fear mongering minority.
The problem with moiving forward President Obama, is the spy machine ball and chain that the Bush adminstration created is running this country.
America has been brain washed into believing that the only way we are safe is by spying on everyone, and not just real suspects. This was done through the fear mongering of saying home grown terrorists are everywhere.
This was done to remove the Judicial process of probable cuase and seeking a signed warrant from a Judge.
So community watch groups accross the nation are being trained in gang stalking torture surviellance tactics. They are being organized by FireFighters and EMS first responders. This is the Bush / Cheney spy machine. Right wing religeous fanatics of the Republican good old boy network.
Plenty of money was shoved there way. Why? For national security, NO , to build a control system run by Republicans to ensure their power.
Thats why they got so dirty during the election. They needed Mccain in get into office to continue and ensure they final building blocks of the spy network.
The Pentegon, Congress and the Senate are all guilty of not protecting the Constitution, major media networks are complicit traitros.
They are fully aware of the goal to make one in evry 20 Americans a Government spy.
Preident Obama, must shed light on this sinister nation wide spy network and shut it down. Warrant less surviellance is not the law of the land. Warrant less surviellance is a tool used for controlling cowards by people who are evil and greedy and NOT AMERICANS.
We know , President Obama, who the payers are that allowed the spy netwrok to grow.
I want this exposed, and shut down. I don't want people to go to jail for violating constitutional law.
I want damages, for the torture I have had to endure for over two years.
We as a nation , can not move forward untill all the Bush/Cheney lies are exposed and the warrant less nation wide spy network is shut down.
If the spy network continues to grow, we will have no honest leaders in office, just zombies afraid to make a mistake or not do the bidding of this evil group of powerful and rich evil greedy men.
