Milk: The Man Who Set America Straight About Gay Rights
The release of a Hollywood biopic about Harvey Milk, America's first openly gay elected politician, could not be more timely.
The streetcars are being renamed and the red carpets rolled out in the Castro district of San Francisco for the world premiere of Milk, the latest film to break Hollywood's long-running taboo over homosexuality.
A roar of approval greeted Sean Penn and Josh Brolin as they swept past
several hundred people who had gathered on Tuesday to applaud the biopic of
Harvey Milk, America's first openly gay elected politician who was
assassinated in a corridor of the nearby City Hall 30 years ago.
Many in the crowd also used the occasion to protest, waving signs urging "Vote No on Proposition Eight". The measure would eliminate same-sex marriage in California if it were to be passed next week, and the battle serves as a topical reminder of how much still stands in the way of the movement that has elevated Milk to iconic status.
The colourful event brought considerable star power to Castro Street, the main street through the most famous gay and lesbian district in San Francisco, where Milk's reign as city supervisor was cut short after he was shot and killed along with the Mayor, George Moscone, having served only 11 months in office.
The actors Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna, and the director Gus Van Sant - the man behind the 1997 film Good Will Hunting - were joined by local politicians, together with Milk's old friends and contacts, many dressed as Seventies drag queens.
Yet it also highlighted a serious and pressing case of history repeating itself. Three decades ago, Harvey Milk was responsible for leading the campaign against a ballot measure that seems eerily reminiscent of Proposition Eight.
Proposition Six would have banned gays from teaching in California on the grounds that homosexuals were, at the time, considered more likely to be motivated by paedophilia. Milk's against-the-odds success in defeating the ballot measure is still seen as one of the most inspiring victories in the gay rights movement.
"Harvey Milk was prophetic, a pioneer of gay rights at a time when people needed it most," said Peter Novak, a researcher on Milk's career at the University of San Francisco, who also had a role as an extra in the film. "He was articulate and founded a defence for the movement that continues to this day. His death was also a significant moment in recognising what was at stake in the struggle for equality. He used to say: 'if a bullet should enter my brain, let it destroy every closet door,' and he knew his death would propel the gay rights movement forward."
Milk, who is played by Penn in the film, was assassinated by a right-wing former city supervisor called Dan White (Brolin), who was upset by the premature demise of his own political career.
Having been brought up in New York, Milk served in the US Navy, and became politically active after moving to San Francisco in the early Seventies. A gift for speechmaking that has seen him widely compared to Barack Obama, helped him to forge links with the local electorate, trade unions, and the city's Asian community. He was elected to office at the third time of asking in 1977.
The new film, which charts Milk's life, comes almost a quarter of a century after Rob Epstein's The Times of Harvey Milk won an Academy Award for best documentary.
The new film features a scene in which Penn enjoys a long French kiss with his co-star, James Franco. In a recent interview, Franco revealed that shortly after the scene was shot, Penn text-messaged his former wife Madonna saying: "I just popped my cherry kissing a guy. I thought of you, I don't know why." The singer texted back: "Congratulations!"
Although Milk's career as an elected official lasted only 11 months, he pioneered several major pieces of equal rights legislation. His anti-Proposition Six campaign culminated in an Obama-like appeal for gay people and civil rights advocates to contribute "just one dollar" to fight the measure. Yet it came to an end on 27 November, 1978, in a wood-panelled corridor of San Francisco's City Hall. Appropriately enough, this is where thousands of local gay couples have been married in the months since California's Supreme Court voted to make same-sex weddings legal.
Dan White had resigned after a political dispute with Milk and other supervisors, claiming that his salary was not enough to carry out the job. A few days later, he changed his mind and asked Moscone to rescind the resignation. When that request was refused, he blamed the Mayor and Milk in equal measure.
Though he hadn't previously shown signs of violence, the refusal affected White badly. A few days later, he broke through a downstairs window of City Hall to avoid metal detectors and killed Milk and Moscone with hollow-pointed bullets from a revolver.
At the trial, White was sentenced to seven years for involuntary manslaughter, having convinced the jury he had carried out the killing on a whim as he hadn't slept for days and had been bingeing on junk food. It is now seen as one of the worst miscarriages of American justice.
His successful use of the so-called "Twinkie defence," named after the snack that White blamed for his state of mind, meant that the plea of "diminished capacity" was later expunged from Californian law. The sentence caused small-scale riots, and inspired the gay rights movement to secure Milk's legacy.
Today, the tale will again be thrust to the centre of the public's consciousness. "Harvey Milk is a true American hero," Van Sant told reporters on the red carpet on Tuesday. "He's a great example of a man representing his community and city."
Gavin Newsom, San Francisco's Mayor, who pioneered same-sex marriage in California, and helped to install a bust of Milk at City Hall, announced that a streetcar used in the filming would be renamed in Milk's honour, saying: "This story couldn't have happened anywhere else."
In Hollywood, the film's nationwide release later this month is sparking widespread debate over how its production company, Focus Features, will try to sell to middle America a title which contains several explicitly homosexual scenes.
Only a small number of advertisements have been bought, and the film's trailer has received limited showings. Producers have kept it away from film festivals and are restricting media screenings, in a strategy aimed to make it become a "word of mouth" success like the 2005 film Brokeback Mountain starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.
They may still face an uphill struggle. "At a recent Vegas test-screening for a middle-class, straight audience, several senior citizens tried to leave after a gay love scene in the early moments, but couldn't because they were trapped in the middle of a row," according to the Hollywood Reporter this week. "The seniors eventually said they were happy that they stayed but, like independent voters in an election contest, these are the very viewers that Focus must woo."
A week before one of the most crucial ballots in the history of gay rights in the USA, the marketing conundrum inspired by Milk's biopic provides the movement he prematurely left behind with a graphic reminder of the troubles it still faces.
"You know, the fact that we are still at a stage where you cannot market this as a mainstream film shows how far we still have left to come," said Mr Novak.

Show AllDianne Feinstein was there, too. This shooting is the reason she fought so hard (and won)to pass legislation limiting gun rights.
OK, CAN EVERYONE E-MAIL TO CALIFORNIANS TO GET OUT the VOTE for NO on 8!!!
The last Field poll is showing it is losing due to the incredible amount of lying advertising paid for in large part by the Mormons (although other evangelicals are kicking in too). We cannot have a state ruled by the theocratic beliefs of a tiny minority just because they have incredibly deep pockets. We cannot allow the sellout of equal rights for all. My greatest fear is the message this sends should this proposition pass.
I am incredibly thankful to Sean for this film at a most important time. And this is one of those events seared in our memories..where we were when we heard..this was the same year as Jonestown.
Thanks for this memory. I was sitting at my desk in downtown San Francisco when we got word of the murders of Milk and Moscone. It was like a physical blow. The sadness and shock. And then the terrible injustice of the system that did not avenge them.

Homosexuality was the preference of the Royalty of India, hinted at by the mass murderous Royalty of the old testament, practiced by the Caesars while they were Emperors of Rome... It has been a means to divide and conquer, which is the true ill of homosexuality. If a persons ass is clean enough there's no harm in ass sex. Feeling at risk and set apart from society is the setup that serves as pretext of the abuse of elite homosexuals by the subsequent dominance they practice which ultimately earns them ill standing in this universe.
The Boystown scandal highlights this means of psychological warfare. Orphaned boys from Boystown Orphanage were used to throw sex parties attended by high level industrialists and national politicians. Some of the boys who were raped at those parties later testified that Barney Frank attended the sex parties. The Boystown operation was conducted by the CIA under the leadership of George HW Bush. One of the boys who later became a prostitute overnighted at the Bush Senior Whitehouse. The later late teen and early adult boys testified in video taped depositions that they were used to abduct other children, boys and girls. They were also used to import drugs, by appearing as a family with the drug running agents, thus less likely to be singled out for search by customs.
If you love music, you're an audiophile. If you molest children you're a what? This speaks to how twisted the psychological establishment is that a phrase meaning "loves children" is used as a descriptor for molestors.
In the Roman army at the time of Jesus return to Israel, Roman soldiers were forbidden to take wives and were encouraged toward sex with junior conscripts. In the Spartan army soldiers were assigned boys to train who were also available to the soldier as sexual playmates. In lore of ancient times Gods of India were protected by homosexual elite commandos. The drive in the media to push homosexuality into wider acceptance, without any discussion of the historical context, is a means to divide for conquering.
These are the real solutions:
Direct Democracy (like how the constituion was established only every day then forever).
Calorie Economics (which means human effort MUST be repaid in HUMAN EFFORT, eliminating the means to game people by cash or material.)
Thermal Depolymerization (The ability to recycle literally anything by feeding it through a pressure boiling process.)
Raised Field Agriculture (Lost Ancient Agricultural system that delivers crop yields on par with modern agriculture which though is sustainable, not environmentally damaging by chemical fertilizer and pesticide.)
Wind Power (Wind energy over America if well enough harnessed could offer 2X the energy that America consumes from all sources today. This does not account for Skyrise Wind Turbines which is my very own invention that I can not find the least help to bring to market.)
Geothermal Energy (Drill to the mantle, pipe some water to it, use the steam coming off it to spin the magnets past the wire coils of your alternator, voila, electricity.)
Wave, River and Tidal Hydro Power (More magnets spinning past wire coils...)
Conversion of solar energy by Heat Engine (aka Stirling Engine... Incidentally solar by photovoltaic and nuclear and biodiesel and oil from half empty wells ALL require more energy to deliver to market than they could possibly return, thus are energy drains and not in the least energy solutions.)
Regenerative medicine (The use of adult stem cells to grow limbs and damaged tissues and whatever's necessary to repair a person.)
Oxidative Medicine (The use of high levels of oxygen to dissolve ANY organism foreign to the human system.)
Chelation (The removal of heavy metal toxins from the body by EDTA.)

say what?
White did not get away with it,eventually the tragedy also took it's toll on him and he committed suicide in his garage, everyone lost from this sad affair.
...and one day out non-heterosexual actors will be hired to play out non-heterosexuals in film. I love these movies but sometimes feel like Native Americans must feel when, in even sympathetic portrayals, some white guy or gal puts on some heavy tan face makeup and plays greats like Chief Joseph, Cochise, Pocahontas and Geronimo.
As much as I admire Sean Penn, the story about telling Madonna that he'd "broken his cherry" creates in me a good bit of ambivalence. Milk, Matthew Shepherd and all the un-numbered, un-named others weren't playing pretend.
The trailer is running where I live and it brings me to tears each time. What a powerful HUMAN story!
Our culture needs brave people like Milk to lead us into a future where sexual orientation, skin color, and nationality have no bearing on our politics and our ability to compromise and collaborate. Viva!
In these past absolutely nightmarish 8 years, the two Americans, both consummate artists, both with courage, flair and eloquence, both with extraordinary endurance- that I have admired greatly, and feel deeply thankful for keeping decent human beings sane in the face of viciousness, hatred and mindless violence- are Sean Penn and Michael Moore.
Granted, there are many other courageous, peace-loving, liberal and progressive figures with knowledge and far-sightedness that have fought for human and civil rights these dreadful Years of the Neocons, Religious Goons and War Criminals/Corporate Swindlers. Howard Zinn, Amy Goodman, Gore Vidal, Harry Belafonte, Mike Malloy (another A+ in my book), Norman Finkelstein- and so many others come to mind.
But MM and SP- these two, given their association with Hollywood and the always suspect "glamour" background- have stood front and center in the fight against the unparalleled criminality of Bushco and its supporting cast of heartless killers and profiteers. Sadly, so many supposedly left-leaning political figures have developed disgustingly cozy relationships with these war criminals and traitors to humanity. Simply look at the likes of Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein, even Hillary Clinton (for her unrepentant "hawkish" stance on waging criminal wars against sovereign nations and innocent human beings), and of course the most despicable likes of Holy Joe Liebermann and Zell Miller.
Within the Hollywood flock- Sean Penn is truly a breath of fresh air. I have watched him in many interviews- both regarding his art and profession, and his views about human roles in relation to the world. He comes across as surprisingly well-read, exceedingly talented, and devoted to all the right causes. Thus he cares about labor, working people, human rights, stopping wars (which are overwhelmingly criminal in both concept and content), and fighting against bigotry and hate. While many other leading Hollywood lights have been strangely quiet in these deeply inhuman times under a bunch of boorish tyrants, or in some cases lent their assistance to the criminal enterprise- MM and SP have carried out their battle for justice and decency through the darkest of times.
Thus, it is only fitting that SP should give voice to the life and legacy of Harvey Milk (about whom I knew nothing before). Human society has to transcend the barriers of race, class, gender and now life-choices. It only naturally adds to the meaning of Freedom in its grandest form. SP, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, and others like them have kept alive my belief in artists, creative people, and thinkers being intrinsically liberal and humanist in all their outlooks. A few terrible exceptions notwithstanding.
Remind me of when Mary Walsh ambushed Doris (Stockwell Day) after he was chocolate milked and the look on his face when she said that she was going to do the same but that the store was out of chocolate milk and only had "homo milk" - the common abbreviation for homogenized milk. Remember the controversy for the common abbreviation for Beatrice homogenized milk on grocery receipts - some figured that it promoted gay bashing.
It is just like why the abbreviation for Conservative on Hansard (trascript for Question Period) lists the Conservatives as "CPC" (Conservative Party of Canada) rather than the original "Con" - which they felt was short for "convict" as well as "conservative" and, thus, derogatory.
From the Trailer, it sounds like a good movie.
If you are not gay, it is about human rights and self acceptance - something we all have trouble with.
I came out in the early 60s, but then I was living in San Francisco at the time. Now I'm out to the point where I don't publish it but don't try to hide it from anyone. I live in Tucson, my old homophobic home town which is now 'gay friendly'. Yes there is progress, but on the other hand I still might be beaten and hung up on a fence by some hate filled 'American hero'. Listening to the Republican rallies I'm reminded that the United States has a long tradition of bigotry and hatred, going all the way back to it's colonization. In a way bigotry is as American as apple pie.
I remember the day Harvey Milk was murdered. I was living in Sacramento at the time, but was in San Francisco house-sitting for a friend. My heart sank, an old familiar feeling that I thought I'd left behind, especially in San Francisco. It reminded me of which country I lived in. I was reminded again when Dan White was given a pat on the hand by a jury of his 'peers'. We like to think that the bigoted have been marginalized, but here we are in 2008 fighting for gay rights in California and across the land. For some reason I'm not very optimistic.
I've never been in the closet, but I remember when Harvey Milk died, too. I was an out teen with one of the most homophobic fathers in the history of the world! He rejoiced in this man's death.
I'm so grateful to the makers of this movie! Can't wait to see it!
I hope proposition 8 fails. I wish gay marriage had been available when I was younger. I hope we get there soon.
I am an openly gay man in Fairbanks, Alaska. It is so distressing to know and see that news like this isn't provided to Americans by our corporate media. That is why we have our wars, prevailing general ignorance, and socio-political apathy in this country. We have come a long way though, as a society in this country. When I lived in Juneau, the state capitol, an older gay man told me that in the 1970s, if the police caught you "being gay", say, asking another man out, for example, they would "pink-ticket" you. This meant being thrown on the Alaska State Ferry with a one-way ticket to Bellingham, Washington, straight from the patrol car, no luggage, calls, etc.. I've lived in Alaska ten years now, and have had no problems, our ignorant oil-bought state politicians notwithstanding.
I was in San Francisco when Milk and Moscone were shot and at the vigils afterwards when Holly Near sang and watched the police riot and abuse women from the bars for no reason. I've been a well steeled activist for over 35 years, I've seen this trailer four times and every time it brings tears to my eyes. Kudos to the fimmakers and the LGBTQ movement.

Thanks again for UK / Guardian letting us Americans
__ know what's happening in our own country.
Thank you especially to Sean Penn, for his courageous portrayal in a antediluvian homophobic supercharged neoCONing propagandizing world.
We do know individually and collectively, so much better than this _ F E A R _ twisted divisive attempt to break society's natural cohesion against reprehensible ( although well organized ) thugs and banksterism gangsters.

There is a surplus of white trash where I live- have always lived. There is no need to try to move away from it either. People are the same everywhere. A percentage of the population of any community will be stupid, ignorant, bigoted, and most likely a combination of the three.
"A percentage of the population of any community will be stupid, ignorant, bigoted, and most likely a combination of the three."
Add "violent" to that list and make it four.

It's the stupid, ignorant, and bigoted people who fuel the mentally deranged among us to violence against the gays.
