Ecological Disaster Looms as Gulf Spill Moves Toward Fragile Coastline
Officials: Leaks Spewing More Oil Into Gulf
NEW ORLEANS - A massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is even worse than believed and as the government grows concerned that the rig's operator is ill-equipped to contain it, officials are offering a military response to try to avert a massive environmental disaster along the ecologically fragile U.S. coastline.

But time may be running out. Not only was a third leak discovered - which government officials said is spewing five times as much oil into the water than originally estimated - but it might be closer to shore than previously known, and could have oil washing up on shore by Friday.
At the same time, there appeared to be a growing rift developing between BP PLC, the operator of the oil rig that exploded last week in the deep waters of the Gulf, and the Coast Guard, which is overseeing the increasingly desperate operation to contain the spill and clean it up.
Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry was emphatic at a hastily called news conference late Wednesday that the new leak was discharging 5,000 barrels a day of sweet crude, not the 1,000 barrels officials had estimated for days since the Deepwater Horizons drilling rig exploded and sank 50 miles off the Louisiana Coast.
But appearing at the same news conference, BP's Chief Operating Office Doug Suttles was just as emphatic that he didn't believe the amount of oil spilling into the water had ballooned - or at the company wasn't able to handle the ongoing operation to contain it.
"We're actually applying every resource available to us," he said.
Suttles pointed to a diagram of the leaks and said the location meant the amount of oil pouring out had not increased. Asked again, Landry stuck to the NOAA estimate and said it was based on aerial surveys, study of the trajectory of the oil slick and other factors.
The Secretary of Homeland Security has briefed President Barack Obama on this new information and the government has offered to have the Department of Defense use its equipment and expertise to help contain the spill and protect the U.S. coastline and wildlife, Landry said.
"It has become clear after several unsuccessful attempts to determine the cause" that agencies must supplement what's being done by the company, she said.
This all played out at the end of a long day as crews began an experiment to burn off parts of the slick - the latest in a series of high- and low-tech efforts to stop the oil leak, reel in as much of the oil as possible to prevent it from washing ashore and harming the fragile wildlife and plant life that dot the coast.
Landry said the controlled, test burn was successful late Wednesday afternoon. BP was to set more fires after the test, but as night fell, there were no more burns. The burns were not expected to be done at night. No details about when more were planned were given during the news conference.
Crews planned to use hand-held flares to set fire to sections of the spill. They turned to the idea after failing to stop the leak at the spot where a deepwater platform exploded on April 20 and later sank. Eleven workers are missing and presumed dead and more than 100 escaped the blast, the cause of which has not been determined.
A 500-foot boom was to be used to corral several thousand gallons of the thickest oil on the surface, which will then be towed to a more remote area, set on fire, and allowed to burn for about an hour.
The decision to burn some of the oil came after crews operating submersible robots failed to activate a shut-off device that would halt the flow of oil on the sea bottom 5,000 feet below.
Officials had estimated about 42,000 gallons of oil a day was leaking into the Gulf from the blown-out well drilled by the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. That would be closer to 210,000 gallons a day with the new estimates. Eleven workers are missing and presumed dead and more than 100 escaped the blast, the cause of which has not been determined.
A spokeswoman for a U.S. military base in Colorado Springs, Colo., that provides support to civil authorities during natural disasters said BP has not requested the defense department's help to contain the leak. However, the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the U.S. Northern Command at Peterson Air Force Base, were anticipating the request, said Stacey Knott.
"We are looking at how we may be able to offer support if we are asked," said Knott.
As for the burn, Greg Pollock, head of the oil spill division of the Texas General Land Office, which is providing equipment for crews in the Gulf, said he is not aware of a similar technique ever being tried off the U.S. coast. The last time crews with his agency used fire booms to burn oil was a 1995 spill on the San Jacinto River.
"When you can get oil ignited, it is an absolutely effective way of getting rid of a huge percentage of the oil," he said. "I can't overstate how important it is to get the oil off the surface of the water."
When the flames go out, Pollock said, the material that is left resembles a hardened ball of tar that can be removed from the water with nets or skimmers.
"I would say there is little threat to the environment because it won't coat an animal, and because all the volatiles have been consumed if it gets on a shore it can be simply picked up," he said.
Authorities also said they expect minimal impact on sea turtles and marine mammals in the burn area.
A graphic posted by the Coast Guard and the industry task force fighting the slick showed it covering an area about 100 miles long and 45 miles across at its widest point.
"It's premature to say this is catastrophic. I will say this is very serious," Landry said earlier Wednesday.
From the air, the thickest parts of the spill resembled rust-colored tentacles of various thickness. The air was thick with the acrid smell of petroleum.
Amid several of the thicker streaks, four gray whales could be seen swimming in the oil. It was not clear if the whales were in danger.
BP says work will begin as early as Thursday to drill a relief well to relieve pressure at the blowout site, but that could take months.
Another option is a dome-like device to cover oil rising to the surface and pump it to container vessels, but that will take two weeks to put in place, BP said.
Winds and currents in the Gulf have helped crews in recent days as they try to contain the leak. The immediate threat to sandy beaches in coastal Alabama and Mississippi has eased. But the spill has moved steadily toward the mouth of the Mississippi River and the wetland areas east of the river, home to hundreds of species of wildlife and near some rich oyster grounds.
The cost of the disaster continues to rise and could easily top $1 billion.
More than two dozen vessels moved about in the heart of the slick pulling oil-sopping booms.
Earlier Wednesday, Louisiana State Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Robert Barham told lawmakers federal government projections show a "high probability" oil could reach the Pass a Loutre wildlife area Friday night, Breton Sound on Saturday and the Chandeleur Islands on Sunday.
In Plaquemines Parish, a sliver of Louisiana that juts into the Gulf and is home to Pass a Loutre, officials hoped to deploy a fleet of volunteers in fishing boats to spread booms that could block oil from entering inlets.
"We've got oystermen and shrimpers who know this water better than anyone," Plaquemines Paris President Billy Nungesser said. "Hopefully the Coast Guard will embrace the idea."
Associated Press writers Janet McConnaughey, Michael Kunzelman and Brett Martel in New Orleans; Melinda Deslatte in Baton Rouge and Holbrook Mohr in Jackson, Miss., contributed to this report.

Burn, baby, burn. We've reached the seventh circle of Dante's Inferno.
This was just one off-shore drilling platform. Now that Barry has approved Bush's plan for off-shore drilling, you can expect hundreds of these platforms stretching from Virginia to Padre Island Texas.
Yes but even though the new areas that Obama opened up to environmental disaster will produce only a tiny fraction of your future energy needs, the lobbyists paying the Democrats will profit nicely.
Caleb, I was living in Corpus Christi, Tx. back in 1976 when the Pemex oil rig Ixtoc II blew out. The result was a fire buring out of control for weeks where the wellhead was, plus and oil slick that covered thousands of square miles of the gulf.
When the mess finally washed ashore, the surf, rather than breaking in nice curl-like wave, just slopped up on the beach. Asthe tides would rise, the oil would push further up on the beach. The final result was a mess of oil about three feet thick, fifteen to twenty yards wide, and sixty to seventy miles long coving what used to be a nice, white sand beach. The seabirds soaked in oil, many of which died, the bottlenosed dolphins that drowned as a result of being saturated with oil, and the fish kill was tragic.
We had a creative county commissioner who took all of the county's front end loaders and scooped up what he could and repaved the oonty roads. Howvever, this would only handle a small portion of what was left in the wake of the spill. For years afterward, the beaches had tar all over them, and they were just unpleseant to use.
If and when this hits the Louisiana coast, the impact will be worse as Padre Island is a barrier island and therefore protects the ecologically sensitve estuaries and breading grounds for many species of fish, shrimp, and crabs.
The company reponsible for this should be required to take every employees wwho works for them, especially the executive class, and give tham a shovel, some biodegradgable detergent to clean birds, and a shovel to manually scoop up every last drop of the mess they created. When they have completed this task, revoke their corporate charter and seize all assets to be used for future cleanup operations.
Where is Sarah Palin when we need her?
Of course a nuclear reactor meltdown is going to be a bit messier.
yeah, but not as visual....................
Yea baby drill baby drill.....forget that sun stuff
Can anyone name just one policy that Mr. Obamageddon has supported that has or is working out to the benefit of us all?
I didn't think so.
Obamageddon will be known as the worst president ever.
Is there any possibility that discussion here could stick to the topic instead of blaming Obummer for all the gd problems here?
BP and Horizon watsit should be held completely responsible for the cost of clean up, not the taxpayer. As it is BP and whoever will already pass along the cost in the gas prices and everyone else will go along.
This is one more proof that those people are doing things they don't know what they're doing, and we keep letting them.
I even wonder if ecological disasters aren't pre planned when possible to make the government give whoever a bunch more money and create more jobs for ARRA that is a major scam...
Anyone bailed you out lately?
SPILL SOME OIL ON YOUR PROPERTY and listen to them scream.
OK. But, I didn't vote. I would have voted for Nader, but he was not on the ballot. I gave Nader money, however.
Don't you think Obamageddon will be known as the worst president ever? That is on topic, isn't it?
Make the oil companies pay for the cost of clean up out of its net profits.
I'm expecting any day for them to announce that the explosion was caused by eco-terrorists.
LOL And I'm sitting here looking out the window at a parking lot with 25% large pickups, 25% large SUVs. Hmmm. I guess maybe BP isn't completely to blame.
Insanity is everywhere.
"Is there any possibility that discussion here could stick to the topic instead of blaming Obummer for all the gd problems here?"
Barry does deserve criticism. He has approved expansion of off-shore drilling. We will see a great many more of these platforms in the future. You should not expect this to be the last major spill.
"As it is BP and whoever will already pass along the cost in the gas prices and everyone else will go along."
And SHOULDENT the cost of this be passed along to those who are causing it - the users of gasoline and diesel fuel? Stop driving you fucking cars!
Afraid not my friend; Bush Junior's got that record. Obama's done some bad things, but nothing as evil as Junior with Darth Cheney dancing him around by the strings.
Naomi Klein said, just after Obama won the election,
“No, Obama will not be four more years of Bush,
Obama will be worse then Bush.”
suicide on the global scale, mass insanity.
such an intelligent species it takes to do all this.
The military is called in. This will be many, many times worse than the Exxon Valdez disaster.

"When will we ever learn"? - Pete Seeger from "Where Have All the Flowers [fish, shrimp, oysters, animals, plant life, people] GONE?
... and if you haven't heard it, I did ... on Canadian News on Sunday night, April 25, 2010. The Pentagon proudly announced with Obama's approval the development of Cyber Weapons to guard against hacking, infiltration of internet sites ... by TERRORISTS? ... and China is on track to develop its own Cyber Weapons as counter offensive ... and the President wants Congress to give him the authority to SHUT DOWN THE INTERNET within this nation in case of an Emergency. Boy ... does that sound sensible/fascistic or what? My God ...
Look it up on Google.
When will we ever learn? When do we stop this Insanity by officials of every nation seriously coming together with a major objective of protecting and preserving the earth and respecting each other and seriously and diligenting working toward truly getting along, no matter what culture, religion, territory, area ... AND PROFITS are involved?
THE COMMON GOOD in this HUMAN FAMILY of ours, all of us,who live on one increasingly fragile planet, gets short shrift vis-a-vis being #1, having the strongest military, oppressing and robbing weaker nations ... all in the interests of HUGE PROFITS for the very, very rich and powerful and maintaining a Corporate Kleptocracy.
BP: Oh, we can fix this oil spill by ourselves. Oh, it's not so bad.
How 'bout not worrying about Covering Your Asses, and just taking responsibility, BP? Then saying loud and clear, WE NEED HELP NOW! Time is running out. All the dithering by GWBUSH & Company & the Homeland Security bureaucracy sure didn't help the Katrina victims. Sounds similar here. Who's going to do what and when? Oh, we have to discuss it. TIME IS RUNNING OUT ... AGAIN!
When will we ever learn?
/cm
History, ancient history, shows over and over again that the 'leaders' whether they are religious, political or a combination of both, NEVER have the 'long term' benefits of their people and societies in mind, with the exception of our Native American's with their 7th generation consideration when making important tribal decisions.
The 'leaders' are busy with their staying elected/popular...their power/ego/personal gain.
That is that. Only the people can change this by demanding...on all levels. By writing, calling, voting, marching and being determined...
We are soft here in the USA...but to be fair, all humans deserve a little denial in order to live with some lack of anxiety. If we stay vigilant all of the time, we will burn out our nerve endings...floating softly on a leaf in the river is part of what we deserve/crave...peace.
The knuckle draggers still live on...I have been perhaps overly hopeful of a consciousness change, but change is very slow...for all of us....
C
We are well down a slippery slope. It doesn't matter if we can learn or not. The human race and many other species, are doomed. I'd just like to see those responsible hang first.
Next, the military will be called upon to straighten out the mess in Washington, DC!
doubt if even that would work................
Just more crystal clear evidence that the exploitataion of natural resources produce no profit, only ever costs. Thus all wealth is garnered through ill gotten gains and illusion.
Hence the creation of waste and the costs to deal with it, when we choose to, irradicates all gains percieved.
In a nutshell: all wealth is stolen.
yes
the only way out is to steal it back...
take your life back, take the land back...
Global Start Date: September 22, 2012...unanimous, planetwide rejection of the modern world...cessation of industry and energy and private property...local acoustic, agrarian living...individual engagement in sustenance, resource management and defense...
let's get those gardens growing...we're gonna need food!
You have posted similar messages many times, and I agree with your sentiments. My question is this. What is the significance of Sept 22, 2012? Thanks.
There is no significance, other than this:
we must make drastic changes, and must do so rather quickly...
many people are reluctant to make these changes, as alternatives are murky...
people would feel better about making drastic changes if not alone, and prepared...
the best preparation is planting edibles, and planning with immediate neighbors...
I chose September 22, 2012, as the end of a growing season, with a couple to go...
between now and then, we plan and plant...
that is the extent of it...
the biggest hurdle, to me, might be continued global communication to ensure cooperation and prevent stuff like what we're doing in the middle east...
gotta go right now, but thank you for asking, and feel free to comment!
Thanks for the response.
I live in a townhouse community of some 80 or so rather modest units. We do have a few acres of common ground, mostly unused except for a little bit of playground equipment.
I've been toying with the idea of establishing a community garden, nothing big to start, but just to get the idea going, and maybe, hopefully, larger in subsequent years. It would be a great way to get to know the neighbors better, it would be fun (in my opinion), and at the end we'd have some great, fresh food. There is nothing, NOTHING, like a garden fresh ripe tomato, a garden fresh ripe yellow bell pepper, garden fresh green onions... now you've done it, I'm drooling already.
good for you...I encourage your idea!
yes, with all due respect to gardeners with much more experience than I, we have had pretty good luck without really trying too hard...we have good sun and rain...
the hardest part was the physical preparation of the area, as our yard was traditionally landscaped, so I had to remove a lot of attractive, but not edible, growth...
once the area was cleared, we mixed in manure and planted...
we were very happy with how quickly we began to see growth, and, as you wrote so well, were extremely pleased with our tasty results!
the flavorful juice and meat of a freshly-picked tomato is, indeed, a genuine treat...
this doesn't address the potential conflict with the powers inherent in the plan, but let's stay positive for now!
This is a good time to call for the 'Revoking of BP's Charter' (or a variation), i.e., BP should PAY for the entire mess and ALL it assets should be sold off. The company should be disbanded and shareholders paid a nominal amount to close out the business.
You're right, BP should pay for everything, but we both know that the public is going to get stuck with the bill.
Catastrophes like this are one of the costs of gasoline and diesel usage, so the costs of mitigating them should be paid by the gasoline and diesel users.
...should be paid for by gasoline and diesel users." Which is to say, all of us, at least indirectly. How did stuff get to your humble village? Railroad? Diesel. Freighter? Diesel. Truck? Diesel. Air? Jet fuel. Afraid you purists without cars will have to share the blame with all of us.
Once again Corporate America will hand the American Taxpayer (See Peasants) the bill for cleaning up their mess-a mess that was caused by their greed. By failing to take all appropriate safety precaussions, by paying Lobyists to fight safety regulations, they pollute and kill for their bottom line and we pay for their greed.
We have War on Terror, War on Drugs; when are we going to have War on Greed?
Greed IS a Terror Drug!
Do the math:
The cost of the disaster continues to rise and could easily top $1 billion.
- ASSOCIATED PRESS
BP’s quarterly profits jumped to $6.08 billion from $2.56 billion during the January-to-March period in 2009, while revenue rose to $74.42 billion from $48.09 billion.
- HOUSTON CHRONICLE
BP saved a half mil by skipping the Accoustic Shutoff Valve on their well head. I hope Obama is counting the spilled barrels of oil - there is a royalty to be collected. All the GOP drill heads should enjoy their new tar sands this summer and next and next and....
Ever been to Destin FL? Panama City? Ft. Walton beach? Sugar-white sand and crystal-clear water. Absolutely gorgeous. Affectionately called the "Redneck Riviera".
Better get down there for one last look.
They're still lying about the cost and will continue to do so. The original lies about quantity of oil have become unsupportable, so they have been revise up 5x -- so far.
A lot of loss is difficult to pin in court -- another reason to dump the corporation-as-citizen model: protections given to humans are here stopping decent estimates of the effects of commercial actions.
Gotta like all the "officials say" and "authorities say" stuff in this article.
Good thing practically the whole eastern seaboard has been opened up to ofshore drilling. Kinda makes you feel proud to be an amurekan.
Good points raised about who will pay for this shit, but answer is the entire planet and many, many species, including ours...
"It's premature to say this is catastrophic. I will say this is very serious," Landry said earlier Wednesday."
When will it be time to declare a catastrophe? How many days of 5000 barrels a day gushing into the gulf does it take to create an environmental catastrophe? Or will it be when they just throw up their hands and declare nothing more can be done?
It only a "Catastrophe" if there an economic impact you see. If 400 million seabirds die, it no problem since "They are not worth anything".
Shrimp on the other hand.........
Three outcomes hinted at in the article:
1) US taxpayers will end up footing the bill for the clean-up.
2) Burning off the surface oil will help save marine life at some cost to the air - "The air was thick with the acrid smell of petroleum."
3) So what is it? 5,000 bpd? 10,000 bpd? It seems that the dangers of off-shore drilling can be easily manipulated when the facts are obscured by 5,000 feet of water. How convenient.
Trying to imagine a similar scenario with a wind farm damaged by storms in the Atlantic. Giant propellers turned into yard art, kids making propeller forts on the beach. Drill, Obama, drill! you phony liberal bonehead!
Excuse me, but "drill baby drill" is a "conservative" "tea party" paradigm. Obama is certainly not a liberal as he is to the right of George Bush and gives the republicans everything they could ask for including the recent passage of the "insurance industry massive windfall profit bill". In spite of this they still denigrate him at every opportunity. Of course if you feel that Obama is trying to portray himself as a liberal, then of course you are correct in labeling him a "phony" liberal.
"Drill little babies drill!", or something like that, was a chant at the 2008 Republican National Convention. It's not the Tea Party's exclusive property.
The Tea Party Express is entirely funded by the Republican National Committee, but it isn't the entire Tea Party movement.
Sioux Rose
Nature speaks in sign language.
Katrina was intended as THE wake-up call to this nation in the way of prompting a conscious shift its priorities away from all war, all the time to more nurturant uses of resources, inclusive of "human resources."
Since NOTHING has changed, the nation is still ramped up for war and bent on a WAR against nature (in the form of immensely violent forms of resource allocation), here the great wound to the center of our nation echoes once again through this human-made catastrophe. It's as if it bleeds where it had been bludgeoned.
As many in this forum realize, a combination of TEACHING conservation, getting people to NOT drive from one side of the mall to the other, or leave their engines running when they sit idly waiting for someone to do some shopping, added to investing in local solar grids, wind farms, hemp, etc... a TOTAL new set of integrated energy systems would do much to offset the reliance on oil (while putting lots of unemployed citizens to MEANINGFUL work). And of course, our dear military is a HUGE consumer of petroleum. Who can argue for its 700 plus bases, worldwide, or its "theaters" of so much adventure in at least 3 foreign lands?
Nature has begun to up the ante on wake-up calls. The longer human beings, especially in our arrogant nation, take to pay heed, the more destruction we will see with reverberations impacting the comforts of our personal lives.
Absolutely Sioux Rose, another wake up call in the Gulf.Pretty clear example of "Carma and Truckma"and the wages of war.Drill baby drill, taxpayer loan guarantees for new Nuclear plants,no change here move along!Gaia is pissed!
peace
How long before desperate Gaia calls artillery (asteroids) in on her own position in order to rid herself of the parasites. The sooner the better as far as I'm concerned. I'd hate to see human vermin spread throughout the galaxy or worse, into other galaxies. Once it gets out into other parts of the Milky Way Galaxy it shouldn't take more than a few thousand years totally destroy the "ecology" of the galaxy itself. The vile Human Race needs to be curtailed before it destroys the freaking universe.
