UN Closes Gaza Aid Centers, Citing Lack of Food
SHATI REFUGEE CAMP, Gaza Strip - Gazans seeking food aid walked away empty-handed from locked United Nations distribution centers Saturday after a strict Israeli border closure depleted U.N. food reserves.
An Israeli soldier shoots tear gas at Palestinian youths throwing stones during a demonstration in the West Bank city of Hebron, November 11. Violence flared again around Gaza on Friday, wounding a woman in Israel and two Palestinian militants, as UN food delivery to 750,000 people ground to a halt in the besieged coastal strip.
(AFP/File/Hazem Bader) Israel sealed
Gaza's borders nearly two weeks ago as part of a new round of fighting
with Gaza's Hamas rulers. Hamas rocket fire on Israeli border towns and
Israeli air strikes on Gaza militants have eroded a truce that had
largely held for five months.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on Israel to open the crossings to humanitarian aid and condemned the rocket fire on Israel. Measures that increase the suffering of Gaza's civilians "are unacceptable and should cease immediately," he said in a statement.
Two Palestinians were killed in disputed circumstances in northern Gaza.
Palestinian Health Ministry official Dr. Moawiya Hassanain, citing reports from local medics, said the two were killed by an Israeli airstrike. However, the military said Israeli forces were not involved and in the past, militants have sometimes been killed by Gaza rockets that fell short or exploded early.
In the Shati refugee camp near Gaza City, hundreds of people walked away empty-handed from a U.N. food distribution center Saturday. A note taped to the center's blue gate said handouts were put off until Dec. 13 "because of a lack of food to distribute."
In all, the U.N. Relief and Works Agency distributes food to some 750,000 Gazans, or nearly half the territory's population. The needy get a new parcel of rice, flour, sugar and oil every three months. On Saturday, some 20,000 Gazans were to pick up food supplies, U.N. aid officials said.
Itaf Yazji arrived at the Shati distribution center Saturday, only to find it locked.
"What shall we eat now?" said the 54-year-old mother of five, who also cares for a disabled relative. Yazji said she had been waiting anxiously to pick up food because her family ran out of rice and flour.
The U.N. World Food Program, which feeds another 130,000 Gazans, says it has enough food to distribute for the next four weeks.
Most of Gaza's 1.4 million residents live in poverty that has deepened since Israel and Egypt imposed a blockade on the territory after militant group Hamas seized power in July last year.
The cease-fire began to deteriorate last week after an Israeli military raid on what the army said was a tunnel that militants planned to use for a cross-border raid. At least 11 militants have been killed since, not including the latest casualties. And some 140 rockets and mortars have been fired from Gaza at Israel. They include four Grad-type Katyushas that landed in Ashkelon on Friday, some 11 miles from Gaza.
Under the blockade, Israel is meant to allow in humanitarian aid, rationed fuel and some commercial goods. Israel says the closure was imposed in response to continued violence.
In the West Bank town of Ramallah, a Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said President Mahmoud Abbas will meet with the outgoing Israeli prime minister on Monday and raise his concern about the Gaza fighting.
The two leaders have met regularly for the past year as part of U.S.-backed peace talks. However, all sides have acknowledged that they will miss the end-of-year target for a peace deal. Olmert has three months left in office.

Show AllCool. Jews colonizing Arab land, and murdering and starving the indigenous population.
I know what the word 'chosen' means, I just would never have guessed that "God's Chosen People" were 'chosen' to kill, torture and starve other human beings.
What ugly, viscous Nazi filth.
Signed, Gratefully Goyim.
What does indigenous mean? Are the Palestinians there the first people? I don't think so. Neither are the Jews, there were people before them there as well. I don't think it is rational to accuse Israel if displacing indigenous people when they were gone thousands of years ago to be replaced by the next progressive wave of conquest. Israel is just the latest wave and they'll be replaced in a few hundred years with the next wave.
So if you and your ancestors have only been on the same land for hundreds of years it is fair play to take it with tanks and bulldozers?
That is a Jewish argument for a 'Jewish Country.'
This is reflecting hideously on Jews globally. AND their supporters!
yeah, like john hagee.....................
I’m glad that my tax dollars goes to religious fanatic’s who are trying to get rid of the population by any means necessary, including shooting rock throwers, which is against the Geneva Convention. I just wish that Americans would be told the truth about what goes on over there, and how the Israeli’s are the aggressive force, so that America would not supply them any more arms….because the state of Israeli does not deserve our weapons… You use them to defend yourself against an attacking force, not to murder humans in cold blood….and I am sure that God is not happy with his chosen people committing murder for worthless land that has been stained with blood over thousands of years….
I'm glad my tax dollars go to protect Israel from Palestinian terrorists. Seems Obama is too given his hiring. :-) Have a good one all you Israel haters.
Hate Israel? No, just hate murdering, COLONIZING, OCCUPYING Nazi Scum; But ya know, that is one and the same ain't it?
"They came down the cobblestone street in their jack-boots and went up to the little shop. The nice man and his boys are gone now." The windows are shattered.
Crystallnacht. Herr Goose4.
Don't hate Israel. Don't hate USA. How can you hate a piece of land? Or people, including babies and children? Or people, some of whom you personally know and love? Just hate policies that destroy land and people.
Joe
It seems Zionists, nationalists, imperialists, racist of Israel and apartheid have forgotten the Warsaw Ghetto, which is what they are doing to Gaza in its fascist, zionist occupation.
NEVER AGAIN??? Actually both the U.S. and Israel have learned nothing from Fascism, imperialism, and racist mentalities.....their policies scream with the fascist epitath: EVER AGAIN!!!!..... so they can build more Holocaust Museums that never teach the world about the political nature of corporate fascist states. Such History would expose the origins of the fascist IRGUN and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians.
The Jews are the New Nazis.
How Freaking Paradoxical.
How dare any of you compare Jews to Nazis? Aren't you ashamed of yourselves?
The Palestinians are blowing up school buses full of totally innocent civilians. Israel is carefully targeted militant extremists, not civilians. Granted there will be accidents, but that's the point, whereas Israel targets terrorists, the Palestinians target civilians. Israel is being held hostage, it is facing an existential threat, it has the right to self-defense. Did anyone think to suggest that Hamas should just renounce genocide and terrorism? Then, and only then, will Israel no longer have a need to defend herself.
Renounce terrorism and genocide? ARE YOU INSANE!?!? that would go against all that Palestine stands for. Why... WHY IT WOULD MEAN PEACE!
What kind of a human are you to want that?
You Hate Palestinians so effing much, why don't you be honest and declare for all to hear your 'spiritual orientation' ha ha. I'm saying only jews hate Palestinians like you do.
In my studies and experience.
Who else knows? But YOUR KIND endlessly call them terrorists and worse; well get some courage, say what you are unless you are ASHAMED-your mommy jewish? That would explain the hate.
bye racist.
You like William Kristol?
Israel kills far more innocent civilians than the Palestinians do, and this is no accident. It certainly appears that Israel deliberately incites terrorism to justify its policies.
Israel targets terrorists that live and fight from homes and farms and fields of civilians. Israel responds and terrorists and civilians die.
Palestinians target civilians, or frankly they just shoot in the direction of something, and civilians and military die.
It isn't the fact or number of people that die that is at issue, it is the fact that Palestine drives the conflict at all times. It makes war, it can make peace. Palestine simply doesn't want peace because peace would codify their loss in battle of their territories. If they don't accept, there is no chance for peace.
Over time, the support of the Palestinians has dwindled. Remember how they were heros in 1968? Now they are the crazy cousins that won't shut up about seeing Elvis on the roof. No one supports them. Gotta wonder why. Going forward they are going to be poorer and less educated and more Islamic and more abandoned by the world. They are gong to be walled off and forgotten except on maps in schools in Somalia and Afganistan.
Peace is an apple, it grows, it ripens, but someone has to pluck it and all the Palestinians can think to do is cut down the tree.
"Israel targets terrorists, the Palestinians target civilians."
Never have I read a more ridiculous distortion of the situation than that. Israel targets civilians just as much, if not more so, than the Palestinians, and as gde pointed out, they have killed FAR more civilians than the Palestinians ever have. Numerous human-rights organizations have provided a wealth of proof of that. Irgun and The Stern Gang (Zionist terrorist organizations) were committing heinous acs of terrorism long before their desired state of Israel even came into existence in 1948. Now it has simply become state-sanctioned . . . and America-supported.
You are simply wrong. Israel does not target civilians unless they are in the vicinity of terrorists acting against Israel. If that isn't an indictment against the savage actions of Palestinian freedom fighters, I don't know what is. And going back to the Stern Gang.... irrelevant history. Might as well criticize the Chaldeans or Macabees or Sparta. Belongs in the what happened before time forum.
Well, I suppose if by "what happened before time" you mean "what happened before the arbitrary creation of the State of Israel in 1948", then OK. But I'm being sarcastic . . .
"How dare any of you compare Jews to Nazis? Aren't you ashamed of yourselves"?
NO! ... because the Zionist government of Israel orders and promotes actions and behavior that is equivalent to the Nazi's. And please remember other ethnic and national groups, political dissidents, gypsies, mentally, physically and emotionally challenged people were incarcerated, tortured, starved and killed in similar millions of numbers as the Jewish population during the Hitlerian insanity.
Also remember Zionists high-tailed it out of Europe when some dangerous flags went up so they made a deal with Hitler and saved their own skins. They cared less than nothing for European Jews as they had little respect for the religious Jews who considered themselves loyal German et al. citizens. Zionists are not necessarily religious nor nationally committed ... except now to the State of Israel.
From what I have read a considerable majority of Israeli citizens are against their own government's policies and the treatment of the Palestinians. And Orthodox Jews consider it against the teachings for Israel to be a defined nation or state. The heart of Hebrew scripture and teachings sings psalms for justice, mercy, compassion, humaneness and fairness.
What would you call it when a singular, superior airforce [the Palestinians obviously have no airforce] bombs and carries out missile strikes on facilities and factories that provide water, sewage disposal, food, and electricity, all of which are located within an area that civilian men, women and children live and are confined? These actions seem to be deliberate attempts to exterminate a specific population. Isn't that genocide?
Remember, JoePumber, when Hamas was elected democratically by the Palestinians to govern them? Hamas candidates weren't expected to win, but they did. However, the Palestinian puppet government was preferred, so GWBUSH & company didn't like the outcome of this scrupulously-run free election which had they raved about initially as a model election, that is, until the results were tallied; the Zionist government didn't like it either ... so back to business as usual. Bomb, bomb, bomb, shoot, asassinate and torment the Palestinians.
It's been been going on since the Zionists arrived on Palestinian soil and began to swindle Palestinian farmers out of their land and ancient olive groves, because so many were illiterate or didn't understand what was being told to them. Sort of like what happened to our own citizens when brokers encouaged them to sign for mortgages they weren't going to be able to afford in a short time when interest took a giant leap. We're in a free-fall financial crisis now because of that kind of chicanery and pure greed.
And then in 1947-48 the Palestinian people were expelled from their lands and their homes and shoveled into refugee camps for an interminable stay. And now there are a lot of walls to wall them in. Gimme a break.
Read some objective history, please, on the history of this whole matter, and preferably objective history written by Jews. Just Google the subject, and you'll find lots of clear-headed, clear-eyed information.
I don't care who it is. I despise hypocrisy above all else. I've had my fill of it in this country of my birth, which was in 1936. My once, to me, great country now has the rare distinction of being #1 in attacking, invading and plundering more countries and territories than any other nation on this earth, and killing more people than any other nation on this earth. Wave the flag for the good old Red, White & Blue.
I hope with our new president, there will be good changes, but I am leary of a Zionist-affirming newly appointed Chief of Staff, and Obama's stated tight connections with Israel and that according to him, the U.S. will defend Israel no matter what.
Bottom line for all the attacks, invasions, and the strange alliances that change through history, it's all about money, power and control ... who has it and who wants it, and who wants more of it ... and then those holding the purse strings and the power justify their positions as the RIGHT course of action with the usual gobbledegook propaganda.
And in the name of everything HOLY, for God's sake, a new killing spree begins or is in preparation.
Who are the bad guys and who are the good guys? And that's easy, the good guys are those who are currently the most powerful in money and weaponry, and their allies would second that.
We are either going to evolve from this juvenile mentality or we are not. We'll sure find out in the not-too-distant future.
>>I don't care who it is. I despise hypocrisy above all else. I've had my fill of it in this country of my birth, which was in 1936.<<
Well you won't have to worry about it much longer will you? :-)
As a matter of fact, I'm planning to live to 125 with an optional 365 if I'm not ready to go at 125. The countdown has been on my computer for years. Greatest anti- depressant there is. Today I've got 19,324 days ahead of me plus the optional 365. I decided that I really want to stay around to see what happens. Maybe we fools will have done ourselves in by that time, of course, but I'm hopeful.
We're designed to live until about 130. But I figured I wouldn't be greedy.
Lots of studies around of those who have lived to 100 and well past ... try 122 and 126, both women, one French and one Brazilian, and lots more males and females in areas where diet is simple and sitting on one's butt watching TV for six hours eating potato chips and dip isn't the lifestyle.
And, hey, when I go out, it's the 1812 Overture with all its bells and firecrackers and spiraling violin notes that I'm going to be hearing. I deserve that kind of send-off for the versatile, risk-taking life I've lived.
I consider myself a youngster at 72, my friend, and it's really just getting good in terms of wisdom and being able to see really far, and so much of the seeing has to do with watching unevolved ego-directed juveniles, mostly male, wave their guns and threaten, threaten, threaten ... Maybe it's really more like spoiled bullies at kindergarten level. "You got the bigger piece. Gimme. Gimme. Gimme." "I want all the toys. Gimme. Gimme. Gimme." "I'm King of the Mountain. You better get off the hill because I'll push you down. It's mine!"
Just the usual patterns. But they must change, with a broad shift of consciousness, that puts more value on life and its interconnectedness with all things, creatures and people, with policies that always consider the common good.
The way we've been doing it for so long, with the exception of those peoples who have long understood the interconnectedness of everything on this earth and beyond, is just plain stupid.
And, dear Goosie, I'd love to stack wood all day with you and then dance for a couple of hours to African drumming or Rock & Roll or Rap music, and then hit the computer and write for about four hours, and if you could keep up, that would say a lot about your endurance and attitude.
I speculate whether you like to make cheap shots or whether it just was a bit of gentle humor that if I was sitting across from you, I would know. But you're not billed as George Carlin; otherwise I would have laughed. So consider this a teaching from an elder, dear Goosie, whether you meant to be snide or were just being playful.
Consider ... Stephen Hawkings ... still cranking out books and papers of brilliant cosmic physics, by blinking his eyes for the number value of each letter of the alphabet to make a word appear on a computer screen. When asked how he could deal with his constantly deteriorating physical condition, which is just about the worst, he said about his life, "I couldn't ask for more."
Interestingly all those geriatric studies of those living past 100 concluded that it was attitude and always being involved and always learning, with the soul sensibilities of an unquenchably joyful, hopeful child and being able to handle or recover from whatever dire circumstances turn up by drawing on that attitude.
A full life turns neither from grief nor from joy. A full life becomes like that of Zora Neale Hurston, who wrote, “I have been in Sorrow’s kitchen and licked out all the pots. Then I have stood on the peaky mountain wrapped in rainbows, with a harp and a sword in my hands.” www.gratefulness.com
So, honey, if you manage to get past 72 or decide to live considerably longer, you're invited to my 125th birthday party, held either in a cave somewhere or my homestead with exquisitely beautiful autumn leaves floating down from 150-foot trees in the clear, untainted air. And I'll be smiling a toothless-baby smile with my heart knowing that the earth is singing again ... all over the world.
peace, fellow being ...
cee miracles -
well, you've certainly opened my eyes. i've been reading your comments for a long time now and never imagined you were in your seventies. obviously, it's your attitude and i hope you do live till 125 but as for the world being put back together again, i'm not as optimistic as you......

The world is intact and whole. It is we, with some exceptional exceptions, who are broken and blinded.
Certainly if we "civilized" ones continue on with our current systems and ways of doing things, we likely will become part of the dust piles of history.
I don't doubt that we're in for it. The earth will do her thing to keep her balance.
Obviously, we are screwing with it big time, just by being fruitful and multiplying as the biblical writers claim Jehovah said we should. Maybe something got lost in translation.
Unless all those who lead us become spiritually aware tomorrow or the next day and most of us follow suit ... the suits, we're undoubtedly in for a lot of pain and suffering collectively on top of the pain and suffering going on from shooting and bombing each other any way we can and using the earth as our dual-purpose EARTH R US super store and garbage dump to kill off our food sources and eliminate our fresh water supplies. Smart, huh?
However, ya' never know. Individual choices one day at a time and a vision to clean the Mother up and clean up our own act -- individual and collective -- to make it nice for those of our spawn's spawn, etcetera, seven generations hence.
Love People. Feed People. Serve People. Remember God. - Neem Karoli Baba/Babaji
Clean up your room and then you can go out and play. - My Mother
Treat others [people/living things] the way you want to be treated. Don't treat others [people/living things] the way you don't want to be treated. - The Universal Ethic
Now isn't this enough to want to hang around for another 50-something years just to see how it all turns out? Will we get it? Or is it time to take the last iceberg out? Hence, 125/126.

goose - that was a despicable thing to say.........you should be ashamed of yourself, but i somehow doubt it.
but if you do have any shame then please apologise to cee miracles.
Not to worry, Coco.
I think I covered it and said what I wanted to say.
And a rule of thumb I've learned, and sometimes in certain circumstances I have to remind myself of it: We are all doing the best we can, given who we are at this moment; otherwise, we'd do it differently. // So there's really nothing to forgive.
There are things I've said or done in the past that I wouldn't do now, couldn't even consider it. They weren't necessarily terribly out-of-the-ordinary things, but I've grown past that person I once was. Or maybe it's more that we fill out in our thinking and being and leave particular ways of doing things in our own dustbins of personal history. // And this is not to say that all my habits and traits and doings are going to win the Saint for the Day award. Ten years from now, I hope I'll look back and say, Wow, you've come a long way, baby, on this or that ... and I'll be working on some other area of self-correction, need-to-grow place, etc. Really what could be more fun to try to become the best person one can be before one hears the first melodic strains of the 1812 Overture?
But thank you for caring and taking the time to goose the Goose, Coco ;-)
Thanks for this description. We must see what's going on in order to proceed on a positive course.
Joe
Wow; Great Post.
Israelis control who enters and who leaves Gaza. The Palestinians do not control who enters and who leaves Israel.
One death is unacceptable. The figures generally show that Palestinian deaths outnumber Israeli deaths 3 to 1. Here is a link from 2005 that shows the background of subjugation that has been building for a long time among Palestinians. The underlying conditions of life have not changed much, only gotten worse. For some, this period is their entire childhood.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3694350.stm
"Granted there will be accidents" - something is not an accident if it happens over and over. A blockade of food over weeks and weeks is not an accident. We use the same excuse when we bomb weddings, not once, not twice but over and over. No it is policy meant to kill the spirit of a people, as was the use of napalm on civilians in Vietnam.
Israel could stop this situation.
There are some Jews there who want to bring peace because they see the immorality. In fact a new peace party is in formation. They should be supported.
The large center of practical people, while retaining quite a bit of anti-Arab feeling, see that this situation is untenable if life is to be normal. They should be told of the possibility for a better way of living.
Then there are others who thrive on conflict and get their legitimacy from theories of superiority and special entitlement. They take what is not theirs. They continue to build new suburbs on Palestinian land on the arrogant assumption that the land is theirs because they say so and the people who had lived there are nothing. Though many of these fanatics refuse to serve in the army for religious reasons, they expect more secular Jews to send their kids and money to protect them. They are often led by the most corrupt and selfish politicians who are more and more frequently being indicted. That sector has to be discredited, isolated and voted out ASAP.
It is easy to see these constellations of people, since they are similar to ours.
Joe
Thank you, well said.
We really need to have more thoughful discussions about this situation.
The settler movement alone needs to be examined thouroughly.
When Jews from New York are welcomed to Israel and are able to build permanent homes while bulldozers crush Palestinian's houses there is something terribly, terribly wrong.
Thank you, well said.

The ratio of dead is totally irrelevant. Of course Palestinians packed together are going to be more likely to be killed as their rapacious, ghoulish "freedom fighters" fire rockets from their buildings into a sparsely populated Israel. Israel has made it hard to kill Israelis and Palestinians make it easy to kill their people. That is not the fault of Israel, it is the fault of the Palestinians. If they want to fight, they should go out into some field far from civilians before the launch anything, then the response from Israel wouldn't risk any civilians.
Of course the Palestinians don't want that. They want their people to sacrifice and bleed so that they can wave that as a banner to an increasingly ambivalent world. Every country with power is invested heavily in Israel. None of them is going to lift a finger to help Palestine kill their golden egg.
Time for peace is now and it has to be with Palestine stopping the killing.
It seems like everything concerning Palestinians is irrelevant to you, except for your blind hatred and lies. Are you a Mossad operative? The Israeli military has been known to fire rockets into its own settlements to provoke and stir the conflict. Palestinian children have too often been the targets of Israeli snipers. Mossad snipers have been known to shoot U.S. soldiers in Iraq so that the finger could be pointed at "insurgents". This list is endless, as other posters have noted the atrocities of the Israeli government. The Israeli goal is not peace and safety for its people, but dominance over the entire Middle East, in partnership with the criminal U.S. government. Your posts seem almost always directed at promoting the prepostrous lies of the Israeli government. You are either an operative or a pitiable dupe consumed with hate--or both.
Sorry, Joe, I think you've swallowed their lies.
Isreal is decidely NOT "carefully targeting military extremists".
This stopped being about Isreal's "defense" a long time ago.
Not really Penelope. Israel pretty carefully targets terrorists, but they hide in the regular population. You commit acts of terror and states respond and they kill you and the people around you. That is the state of the world. If you don't want your family killed or your neighbors, then stop fighting from their houses and farms.
Not an acceptable or even convincing explanation. How does that fit in with a food and medicine blockade or the big fence that keeps Palestinian people from going to school or to visit their relatives? (Or even to get to work to clean floors).
Joe
Don't get sucked in Penelope. The Jew Occupiers Stole Palestine, they have 1.5 million imprisoned and starving in Gaza, more on the West Bank.
People trying to resist an occupation are not terrorists.
Translucent.
It is WRONG to deliberately deprive a whole population of food - and electricity and water and fuel and medicine. It probably violates international laws against collective punishment.
One goal seems to be to wait until some Palestinian father or teenager is driven mad from seeing the situation of his family and is driven to attack. That makes it possible to justify further oppression of this sad ghetto and to distract from the corruption of Israeli officials. If it weren't for the ongoing fear of Palestinians, this particular corrupt bunch would have no support. They have to keep the conflict going.
Joe
Take a look at the "soldier" pictured above...he look like his ancestors came from that part of the world?
F No. Try Ethiopia.
My G*D you are a racist!
You comment would be inappropriate even if you clearly identify the person in the photo - but you can't even do that! You have no idea what that soldier's ethnicity is - not that it matters. I don't know what to say, I am shocked and personally offended.
READ MY ABOVE POST AND GET OVER IT.
And check this dude; maybe I'm a little extra incensed because of a video I've seen with a jew soldier that looks exactly like this creep and he is torturing a Palestinian. Maybe you have seen it; 2-3 soldiers, a man on the ground, and they are using large rocks to break his shoulderblades.
BUT THE OCCUPIERS, THE SCUM, WERE FROM ANOTHER CONTINENT.
I know torturing Palestinians is okay with many-but not me.
And occupiers are by definition from SOMEWHERE ELSE.
Translucent.
What a racist! You look at pictures of Martin Luther King on the Lincoln Memorial and say, "Wow does he look like he's from here? NO. Send him back to Africa!"
Racist!
"Send him back to Africa?" Hell yes, and every occupying murderous man woman and child* to the ends of the Earth from which they came to kill and hurt Palestinians.
I've seen the Proud Jewish Pictures of the Little Jewish Children signing their little Jewish names with crayons on 500 lb bombs and cluster bombs dropped by the Jewish Air Force on Arab Children, Women and Men.
Like the Hitler Youth League.
Goose4; you defend Nazism.
Israeli Jews as a group are not directly responsible for their country's treatment of Palestinians; it is their government which is fascistic and similar compared to the Nazis of Jewish suppression of the 1930's and 40's. Where is Elie Weisel's leadership?
