Rep. Pompeo Confirmed to Lead State Department
Statement of Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food & Water Watch
WASHINGTON - This afternoon the U.S. Senate confirmed Rep. Mike Pompeo’s nomination for Secretary of State. In response, Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter issued the following statement:
“Rep. Pompeo’s confirmation amounts to another strike against global stability and the common-sense climate action required to maintain it. At a time when many of our military and diplomatic leaders cite climate change as the greatest threat to world peace, the appointment of a belligerent climate denier to lead the State Department is an affront to future generations at home and abroad.
“It is shocking that Senator Schumer and Democratic leadership could not hold their caucus together on this vote, or at the very least, succeed in making Pompeo’s disastrous climate and environmental record a major factor in these proceedings. Democrats that jumped ship to support this dangerous climate denier must and will be held accountable by the people.”
