Growing Concern Over Israel's Weapons Use
Whether from delayed shock or not, Mahmoud Abu Halima was almost dispassionate as he pointed to the hole in the roof made by the artillery shelling which killed his father and burned to death his baby sister and three of his younger brothers. He had been next door and had come running when he heard the first explosion. "I started to go upstairs shouting ‘mama, mama',".he said. "But she was already coming down. She was burning. All her clothes were on fire. I put my jacket on her. She told me: ‘go and get your father, he is hurt."
View taken on January 20, 2009 shows alleged burning white phosphorous at the UNRWA's warehouse (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) destroyed during Israeli strikes in Gaza City. UN chief Ban Ki-moon reiterated Wednesday his demand for a full explanation of recent "outrageous" Israeli attacks on UN facilities in the Gaza Strip during a Security Council briefing on his Middle East tour.
(AFP/Olivier Laban-Mattei) The sight that greeted Mahmoud, 20, is one which will presumably haunt him for the rest of his life. The rest of his family had been eating lunch in one of the rooms but when they first heard shooting had moved - fatally - into the hallway for safety. The corpse of his 45 year old tenant farmer father Sadallah, directly hit from a shell - one of three all the family say arrived in quick succession - was, Mahmoud said, "stuck together" with the bodies his three still smoldering sons, Abed, 14, Zaid,10 and Hamza,8 seemingly having hugged them to him in his last seconds. His 15 month old sister Shahed was lying separately after, in the words of her severely burned mother Sabah, also 45, she "melted away" as the missiles struck while she was being breast-fed.
If the investigation which the Israeli military announced this week into the use of white phosphorous is serious, it will have to examine the events at the Abu Halima house here in this semi-rural suburb of of Beit Lahiya, among many other locations. It's unlikely to dwell for long on the fact that the war saw the first use of artillery in Gaza since late 2006.
The military ended it after 18 members of one family were killed by shelling on a civilian house in Beit Hanoun in November 2006.
But it will have to take into account that the Amnesty International have no doubt that the shells which killed the Abu Halima family contained phosphorus. Nafez al Shaban, the Glasgow and US trained head of Shifa Hospital's Burns Unit is certain that the bone-deep tissue destruction sustained by Mrs Halima, her critically injured daughter in law and granddaughter, were caused by it. And finally fragments of the brown spongy substance, with its unpleasantly pungent smell, are still lying in the debris outside the Abu Halima house.
After a week of ceasefire Israel is facing growing questions not only about phosphorus but what other weapons it used. For the many thousands of Gazan civilians seeking to rebuild their ruined lives the hope that a new US president will be more active in the region than his predecessor still seems barely relevant. And this is not only because of an injury total put by the ministry of health in Gaza at 5,300, or worries about long-term psychological damage to their children. They also face a protracted dispute between Israel, the Ramallah based Palestinian Authority, and much of the international community on the one hand, and Hamas on the other before multi-billion dollar task of reconstruction can even begin. For most Gazans peace is a return to their previous impoverished life under siege -only worse.
In Gaza City, as the shops open and the Hamas policemen return to the traffic junctions it is possible to see some kind of surface normality. But to drive out here past the bombed out buildings on roads turned into barely passable dirt tracks by the Israeli tanks is to see a landscape described -without hyperbole-by the Red Cross as resembling an earthquake zone. About a mile from the Abu Halima house, two donkeys still lay dead beside road, just as the decomposing body of Shahed Abu Halima did for four days and those of her father and three brothers for nine until the Red Cross could reach them. The family say that while relatives got Sabah Abu Halima through to hospital in the the first truck the second two vehicles were fired on from tanks a few hundred meters down the road, killing two members and leaving the rest of the passengers to flee and abandon the bodies.
Atatra has long been identified by the Israeli forces as a launching ground for Qassams, and maybe some of the ruined buildings a mile or more from the Abu Halima home were booby trapped. But the family insists that no gunmen were operating round the home when it was shelled as the Israeli forces occupied their commanding position here overlooking Beit Lahiya. In Shifa, the wounded and bereaved Sabah, who voted Hamas in 2006, threatens to become a suicide bomber and says she wants Tzipi Livni to "burn as my children burned." But her cousin Ibrahim, 58, says none of that. "We are all farmers," he says." We have no connection to the factions. Why are the Israelis doing this to us?"

Show AllPalestinians are a traffic accident, endlessly repeated. By now, no one is watching.
Only sheeples like you in the US....The rest of the world are watching the situation very closely. I think the UK is starting to show signs of weariness. And also the EU.
True enough JJ Doyle. And it is a crime our government has offered carte blanche to any Israeli brutality or violation of international law. Which is just the way Israel Firsters like it. Ie, the "lobby," which enforces unquestioning support of all Israel's actions. Dare speak up, voila! You are an anti Semite or a self hating Jew. And your career in American politics is over.
It is beyond question that AIPAC has US politicians and the MSM in a death grip.
The only realistic way to eliminate its influence is for US Jews to reject it en masse as there is no hope whatever that US politicians or the MSM will take it on.
Last week some Pakistani immigrants broke windows in a London shop, where the owner has a Jewish-sounding name. It was a great day for the Holy Jihad.
And following the same logic, if a Jew in Germany (circa 1937) got drunk and smashed a store window that action would reflect upon the inferiority of the Jewish people? Right? Proving the Nazis were right.
A Jewish refugee in London, named Greenspan, killed a Nazi in 1938. That was the rationale for Kristalnacht. I don't really know what to make of your metaphor.
.One doesnt know what to make of your utter lack of humanity....

Quite simply, you are a not a very nice person are you?
"Palestinians are a traffic accident, endlessly repeated. By now, no one is watching."
We're watching, Mr. Moyl, we're watching.

Of greater concern than Israel's weapons use, are the sources of Israel's weapons supplies. The western media is quick to stir for war on the grounds of weapons supplies to Hamas, if one can call the crude rockets and AK 47s weapons at all! Isreal has an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction, the UN had a taste of the effect of some of those weapons, perhpas the fingers should begin to point at the USA as a supplier of such weapons. Perhaps we should begin to call for international action against the USA for supplying weapons of mass destruction to rogue states and dictatorships.
Mr Doyle your attitude is that of the Western Racist who still believes that racist power should control the rest of the world. Maybe you in your land of wealth and luxury is not watching, but we in the Third World are definitely watching.
Your attitude is that America ought to use its power and influence to promote Arab aims, and not American aims.
And how do you define these aims?
An outsider looking on, according to this reasoning, can not see right or wrong. He must simply adopt to "American aims."
Never mind these aims have led us into an unnecessary war in Iraq. As well as defending American corporate oil interests in Iran and elsewhere, where (Iran) we freedom loving Americans toppled a freely elected leader to put in a royal dictator who would safeguard "American aims."
And of course, as Americans we can never criticize "American aims." For, whatever they are, they have to be right. Why? Well, we're Americans, after all. And can Americans ever be wrong?
I thought our founders, though, settled that question with something called The Bill of Rights, which was a response to abuses of power we still see today.
But when it comes to Israel, well, we can always criticize, of course, just stick to the "aims." And never say anything bad. For Israel First, right or wrong, Israel First, no matter how many Arabs die.
It is in the interest of America, and also a matter of longstanding American policy, to promote the well-being of America-like bourgeois democracies throughout the world. That includes Israel.
Why are you stealing land from the Inca?
"Your attitude is that America ought to use its power and influence to promote Arab aims, and not American aims."
How does Israel represent American aims? What do they have that we need?
The Arab countries definitely have something we need, so it seems it's in our best interest to support Arabs over Israelis.
"All Nature's difference keeps all Nature's peace." Alexander Pope
Supplying Israel with weapons and money to steal land as proven by Israel's violation of the 4th Geneva Convention of which Israel is a signatory party and U.N. resolution 242 is NOT an American interest, but rather all it does is put blood of innocent Palestinian women and children on American hands. I want my 10 bucks back that was used by some thug IDF soldier to shoot a Palestinian kid in the head.
Among the self justifications and lies which support this offensive, the one of Hamas fighters “hiding” among civilians may be among the most repugnant. For the military strikes were on a city, a densely populated area, where civilian casualties would be inevitable.
But the Israelis can blame Hamas for "hiding" among the civilians, instead of = what? Coming out to fight the IDF on an open field, in a straightforward, "honest" and “brave” manner? Their small arms against israel's tanks, jet planes, field artillery, and attack helicopters?
The lie becomes even more repugnant when it is seen as an easy, convenient rationalization for willfully, knowingly, attacking a large civilian population: shirking all blame for the consequences.
If Lithuania launched missiles at Russia, and Russian troops inveded the country, no one would claim that Lituanians were innocent victims.
I recognize, that you are unable to apply the same standards to the Holy Arab Race, as are applied to everyone else. YOu need to recognize, that said inablitity reflects your ethnic chauvinism/racism.
What is strangely missing from your "analysis" is that the Palestinians are an occupied people and have a right to resist. If Israel wasn't bent on stealing their land and just returned to their own borders maybe the Palestinians wouldn't fire any rockets.
If the Palestinians occupied Israel what do you think Israel would do you dimwit?
I think that every felon has a rationale, which explains why he had the right to rape/murder the old lady. Arab stories are not interesting, in and of themselves. They are interesting in that they all point--100% of the time, without any exceptions whatsover--- to the right/necessity of Arab-committed murder.
So much for Arabs. They are not even human in your eyes. Pointing "100% of the time, without any exceptions whatsover" to "Arab-committed murder."
Yet in the post above you accuse me of "racism?"
When looking at this kind of entry it becomes difficult to believe there can be any form of communication. That trying is probably a waste of words and time. But are you sure your accusation isn't merely projection?
The far right here in the US does seem to project a great deal. And the far right attracts many ugly people, full of hate and fear, fantasizing all kinds of monsters and enemies. Defining truth as whatever benefits them. Working toward more and greater violence.
Fine. 100% of Arabs, except for Fouad Ajami, and Wafa Sultan, Nonie Darwish.
5 million Israelis support a dozen viewpoints re: the Arab-Israeli war, from self-destruction to nuke-em-all, with all of the stops along the way. 300 million Arabs support one-and-a-half viewpoints: the Israeli state and middle eastern Jews must be eliminated and replaced with a country ruled by 1)Ismail Haniyeh or 2)Suha Arafat.
Totlitarianism on the Arab side, is certainly a part of the problem.
Oh, there's no denying there Arab crackpots and religious fanatics too.
In fact, those who lob rockets indiscriminately into population centers are simply criminals. They may even kill innocent civilians who are sympathetic to the Palestinians' suffering. They commit murder, pure and simple. And their own sufferings, or religious beliefs - whatever - are no excuse for murdering strangers merely because they're Jews.
True enough. But though there 300 million Arabs (I'll accept your statistics) and 5 million Jews in the region does not in any way condone Israeli barbarities. And to believe the "Arab hordes" will overrun Israel is simply a paranoid dream. The Arabs simply can not do it.
Israel Firsters - they refuse to look upon Israel's crimes. It's all Israel First, right or wrong. No matter what Israel does.
Ric Abreu offers a good answer to what you said.
Now, as for the personal attack: re "ethnic chauvinism/racism."
Is this a new way of saying "anti Semite" or "self hating Jew?" A new "PC" manner of smearing critics of Israel's brutalities?
Now, as for Lithuania attacking Russia.... Wouldn't you feel any pity or concern for the poor innocent Lithuanians who would be slaughtered in such a mismatched contest? (Assuming their government leaders would be crazy enough to start such a war with Russia.) But if innocent Palestinian civilians are slaughtered they don't count?
"Holy Arab Race?" No, perhaps "human Arab race?" Aren't they as deserving as Israelis and Jews? Or Lithuanians? Or, perhaps, you yourself?
Shooting rockets across the border is going to elicit a lethal response. Dogs have the capacity to understand this kind of simple equation.
And in your point of view Arabs are dogs? Or less than dogs?
International law prohibits collective punishment. The reasons should be easy to understand. But if Arabs don't count, then it really doesn't matter that 400 or so children were killed in this latest israeli escapade, does it?
Arabs are more dogmatic than dogs.
How to be a Progressive: Remember,
When Hamas randomly kills Israelis= not collective punishment, not significant.
When Israel kills Hamastanis= collective punishment, deeply significant.
Oy vey. Oy vey.
But it IS significant when Arabs strap on a bomb and walk into a public place blowing up twenty or thirty innocent people. All strangers: perhaps, some of them, sympathetic to the Palestinians' suffering.
But even when the tally rises up to more than a hundred to one you still can not find a tiny particle within your heart of compassion? Compassion for dead innocent Arabs? Not even in your mind?
Do you gloat over the slaughter of Arabs? How can you expect any sane or decent person in the world (excepting those cowards in politics) to sympathize with a government, and the people backing that government, who behave in this brutal manner?
I don't know who you are. If you live in Israel or are closely tied to Israel. But this behavior on the part of the Israeli government will eventually lead to the self destruction of Israel. Israel will be condemned not only by the Arab states but by the world. (Though in that regard the status of nations tends to be fluid since so many commit crimes.)
You can not see Palestinians as simple human beings. You have somehow blocked that consciousness from your mind and filled that place with hatred. Those who criticize Israel do not condone terrorism. To say we do is to deflect the criticism by changing the topic. It is childish and blind to behave and to think in such a narrow manner.
Reach into yourself, please, and examine your humanity. For you are basically no different from Arabs, Jews, or gentiles.
Arabs express again and again and again and again and again, that they love war, that they can hardly wait for the next war, and that the expenditure of ten or twenty million Arab lives in exchange for the extermination of the Israelis, is a good deal---one that they are happy to make (what do you think that all of the Arab chat about the Arab Population Bomb means?).
They aren't innocent victims.
And yet people are still shocked to hear Zionists referred to as "Zionazis"....
Exhibit A: JJ Doyle.
Don't worry about this guy, he's evidently a racist shill.
.Possibly a very sick human being too. He shrugs off 1300 dead Palestinians, half of them woman and children as justified. His sense of justice and fairness is nonexistent. That Israel lost 13 dead, five by friendly fire while slaughtering 1300 means little to this person. That Israel has mistreated the Palestinians since the inception of Israel in 1948, that they failed to honor the cease fire by continuing to blockade the shipments of humanitarian relief efforts, foodstuffs, medicines, clothing and other necessities of life thus practically guaranteeing a response from Hamas seems of no import to a poster who appears to be little more than a sociopath.

Yes the none preditorial world would if Russia han Anexed Lithuania and putting it's people in consentration camps, chasing the majourity int foreign lands starving them turning them into their slaves.
Actually, the Russians did all of those things to Lithuanians. It was called "Communism." Arabs claim that the Israelis did the same to them. That is called "Bullshit."
So, sheeple of Amerika how bout all the stories in the media about the aftermath
of the Holocaust in GAZA???? That's right there is NONE..... I wonder why???
Simply because the American media is CONTROLLED by Jewish interests!!! Not
INFLUENCED but Controlled!!!!!!! Big difference!!!!!
And what of the Great Black HOPE-Obama???? The only comment he's made
about Gaza was to blame the victims and praise Israel..... No big news there
unfortunately.....
Please America, for Christ's sake, let's not ask WHY the next time we get kicked
in the groin......
So how bout that Miracle on the Hudson??? So long losers!!
A Letter to Pres. Obama
Dear Sir, Mr. President
It has come to my attention that you are now the 44th DECIDER, Co&Chief, or leader of the free world. So what do we do about this mess--I sure hope you are open to truth and fairness.
However, if you are merely a replacement of the same dasterly policies as we have been involved in the last 50 years--then prepare to deal with the RATH OF GOD!
In mass, we the people trusted you--have you already let us down? Some are suspicious that you were chosen by the last adm("W")--just as they used Colin and Condi--they knew the country wanted as much change as we could get. The old Good cop/ Bad cop trick. when you are so hated get someone to go against you--like in the third world when the dictator had gone over the line--they will run a straw man acting in opposition and with complete separation from the evil regieme. I often wondered how someone like BHO got so much favor from the press--I rationalized it as such an overwhelming hatred for Hilary in the primary, and in the general I believed that it was very odd that John McCain was the best the Repubs could come up with--it's starting to look different with hindsight--we might-have-been HAD!
Please do not use the term: "Leader of the Free World". The leadership of the US does not speak for the world...just the US. Period. And they have shown the world that ther are the mouthpiece of the zionist regime. Nothing more and nothing less.
And it is leader of multitude of brutal dictatorships around the globe, especially the ME.
How about: Führer of the Free World?
You can insert the term "self-appointed" as even the Commander-in-Chief moniker has no constitutional basis. In fact, it's meaning in Latin is very revelatory -- Imperator, or more specifically, Imperator Maximus.
"Those who threaten Israel threaten us; Israel has always faced these threats on the frontlines and I will bring to the White House an unshakable commitment to Israel’s security. That starts with insuring Israel’s qualitative military advantage. I will insure that Israel can defend itself from any threat from Gaza to Tehran. Defense cooperation, defense cooperation between the United States and Israel is a model of success and it must be deepened. As President I will implement a memorandum of understanding that provides $30 billion in assistance to Israel over the next decade, investments to Israel’s security that will not be tied to any other nation."
-- Barack Obama, DEMOCRAT, June 4, 2008.
Notice the date on that quote. It's PRIOR to the election. In fact, it's right in the middle of the campaign when everyone should have been paying attention.
Didn't anyone bother to read anything about who they were voting for?
No one got swindled.
Admit it. Obama hasn't changed. You were merely ignorant.
I wasn't, and that's why I'm not at all surprised that Obama supports Israel, or wants to send more troops to Afghanistan, or recently bombed Pakistan. He campaigned on those exact issues, and I voted for him on that exact basis.
Everyone who is surprised by Obama political stances either couldn't be bothered to read any of Obama's speeches or policy statements, or they are simply being willfully delusional.
.Are you only capable of mouthing the platitudes of others, of picking and choosing those phrases and statements that support your preconceived opinions? Barack Obama, in his two year $750 million dollar campaign for the Presidency, said a lot of things, some of them rather contradictory in fact. But the nuances always escape you Joe, which is, after all, what makes you so worthless.
.
We see things, not as they are, but as we are.
Anais Nin
Are you insane?!?
I have not cherry-picked anything.
Can you read?
Go to Obama's website and read what he says about Israel.
Go on! Find me a quote where he supports Hamas or condemns Israel.
Come on, ardee, at this point you're little more than a republican troll with your constant Obama-bashing.
"We see things, not as they are, but as we are." Indeed.
That Obama is a war criminal coddler is not longer in question. The OS-DPAs (Obama-supporting Democratic Party apologists) have been insisting on the "one Führer at a time" theory/excuse. We have a new Führer now, Barak Bush is his name and he failed the test.
What has he said about documented Israeli war crimes? Nothing. I knew he would prove to be an AIPAC lapdog and a Republican-lite.
Can the OS-DPAs explain the policy difference between the old Bush and the new one?
Hey Horrified.... It's not my fault we don't have a free press here in
America.... And don't throw stones at America.... Your leaders in the UK kow-tow
to Israel to the same pathetic degree as do our leaders here in the land of the
"free." Being Irish, I don't have much love for you limies but god bless you
for burning down the White House in the War of 1812!!! Good show lads!!!
Dude,
I am not a British citizen. The internet is no limited to the west only.
I think most people would have assumed from your comment that you were a
limey.... Please find it in your heart to forgive me.... I am quite aware that
the internet is not just limited to the West and that the internet is on computers now...
peace
