Heartland Claims 'Fraud' Over Leaked Documents, Offers Scant Evidence
Two days after misinformation watchdog website DeSmogBlog posted leaked internal documents from the Heartland Institute that seemed to show its operational and funding strategy for its ongoing 'global warming denial' campaigns, the rightwing think tank has now come out and said in a statement that the "documents were stolen from Heartland, at least one is a fake, and some may have been altered."
But, as The Guardian's Suzanne Goldenberg reports:
the statement from Heartland communications director, Jim Lakely, identifies only one of the eight documents posted online on Tuesday night by the DeSmogBlog website as a "total fake". That document, two pages headlined "Confidential Memo: Heartland Climate Strategy", largely duplicates information contained in the other documents."
And as DeSmog itself reports:
The Heartland Institute has confirmed in a prepared statement that it mistakenly emailed its board materials to an anonymous third party - confirming the source of the documents released here on the DeSmogBlog yesterday.
Heartland then goes on to allege that one of the documents (the Climate Strategy) is a fake.
The DeSmogBlog has reviewed that Strategy document and compared its content to other material we have in hand. It addresses five elements:
The Increased Climate Project Fundraising material is reproduced in and confirmed by Heartland's own budget.
The "Global Warming Curriculum for K-12 Classrooms" is also a Heartland budget item and has been confirmed independently by the author, Dr. David Wojick.
The Funding for Parallel Organizations; Funding for Selected Individuals Outside Heartland are both reproduced and confirmed in the Heartland budget. And Anthony Watts has confirmed independently the payments in Expanded Climate Communications.
The DeSmogBlog has received no direct communications from the Heartland Institute identifying any misstatement of fact in the "Climate Strategy" document and is therefore leaving the material available to those who may judge their content and veracity based on these and other sources.

Show AllWhen exactly did we come to the conclusion that a democracy could be operational in a highly complex world with a dumbed down populace?
The fantasy life of most people leaves me breathless - and very near hopeless of a soft landing. Complete collapse is the only way to confirm all that science has been saying these past decades about the state of the planet.

=======We need Larry (or any progressive thinker with money) to make the same offer to employees of these right-wing organs who are willing to leak sensitive information. While the effort may be only partially successful, it would ratchet up the Kochs' security costs..
If they're going to f*ck with us, we need to f*ck with them.

while the far right wing assurs him there's no problem. does he contiue marching in lock step toward possible death, turn back OR......open his eyes??????
Anyone who writes or says "We know for a fact that scientists who believe in "climate change" published faked data. Now we have the discredited climate change side", is either an imbecile or being disingenuous. Either way, he or she is blowing it out his or her ass. That's a fact.
Nice to see you're up to your old tricks.
If this is the best you can do to debunk what you refer to as conspiracy theories, go back to NPR and re-insert your head in the sand.
What I did find was a number of equally-unsupported claims by partisan sources with no credibility. Is that what you're relying on? Even MSN, a propagandistic corpomedia operation, concedes that there's been no fakery.
Would you prefer to retract your unsupported claim, or do you think you can find actual support from credible sources?
Be honest, what books on the science of global warming have you read? What books on the subject have you read from people who say that global warming is caused by human activity? Hurry up, Google some scientists and lie.
Since you obviously never have studied the science of global warming (if you did you wouldn't say such loony things about Minnesota, you'd know better) , the subject is incredibly complex. For example, many scientists say that if warming persists the conveyor belt that brings warm water around the equator to parts of Europe could be disrupted. If that were the case then parts of Europe would get colder and this would be related to a world wide warming trend. Scientists also know that there were parts of Europe that were warmer during the little ice age. To say that Minnesota was warm in 1885 or whatever is beyond ignorant.
"You people seem to still believe what you want to believe without doing any critical research into the claims on both sides."
You have shown that you haven't read a lick on the science of global warming and then lecture others (as if you would know what people have or haven't read on the subject). Simply amazing.
There's almost always a January thaw in Minnesota. It comes in January. For some reason, St Paul decides to hold their Winter Carnival in January, and wouldn't you know it, the centerpiece ice sculptures that they spend a fortune on having carved turn to blobs whose blobbiness varies with how warm the thaw is.
You'd think they could work out after a hundred years or more that there's almost always a January thaw in January that varies in warmth from year to year, but usually in the 40s, a sort of betrayal just before the February deepfreeze when it used to go to -40 some years and resemble Winnipeg, which is when they should hold the Carnival. But no, it's all wealthy business owners who suffer from Mardi Gras envy and the desire to play dress-up in funny costumes. They don't believe in things like global heating or even January thaws.
Minneapolis is smarter -- they celebrate Syttende Mai and Svenskarnas Dag, both in the summer.
Regardless, believing in climate change is not the same as believing that Obama deserved his Nobel Peace prize. Many people who believe in climate change do not believe that Obama deserved that prize. I don't.
Can you come up with a climate change denier who isn't debunked? Which means, the person works in the area of climate change, is a scientist, and isn't getting paid by the oil companies or the Republican Party?
LOL! What in the hell are you talking about? Easily the weakest argument I have ever read on the subject. You just blurted out the same tired talking points people have heard over and over again. At least put some creativity and effort into this. If you are doing this on your lunch break from this organization, or something similar, at least go back and talk with the "scientists" and get a better understanding of the lies you want to puke out. The "scientists" of these organizations have lots of lying behind them. Many were whores for the tobacco industry, they were certain it didn't cause cancer, and now they are certain about global warming. If this issue is resolved I'm sure they'll move on to evolution, if they haven't already. I wonder if the flat Earth folk could buy them off.
Lies, falsehoods, and frauds upon lies, falsehoods, and frauds upon lies, falsehoods, and frauds upon...
The toxicity of everyday life in contemporary Amerikkka...
Lemme outa here!!!!!!!!!
Holy crap. The lobby, as Michael calls it, is out in force to defend the Heartland Institute on CD today! They've given up on making any actual claims about climate science and have switched to scattershots of incoherent execrations. Get me a bucket of hot soapy water and a pile of old rags, there's denialist logorrhea all over the place in here.
Yep.
I have always said -- if the public could get a hold of the global-warming denier industry emails like they did the CRU scientists' emails -- now that would make for a wicked scandal -- unlike the non-event Climate-gate turned out to be after a few rigorous reviews of the matter.
Anonymous should undertake this project.
But even this document leak is very illuminating - hat's off to the person who got the email by mistake and ratted them out.
Luckily, the people are getting their own ideas about economics, public policy, and their own better interests. The people are now learning the responsibility is theirs, to decide what and how much is produced, and how, and by whom. The people are now learning to decide what and how much and how and by whom public policies shall be set.
And what goes into the school curriculum, obviously. Quite a responsibility we're taking on as we cut the propaganda supply tubes.
The people are discovering the excitement of being in the drivers' seat of society, their very own personal selves. The people know that this idea of they themselves occupying the society's control bay is different than working in the engine room, year after year. And the people are voting accordingly, in both the voting booth and in their everyday activities, shifting their exchange to the local level, starving the elites and das korporations down to size. It's a different world today, and the elites are frantic about the future. The people are incredibly excited.
Those feckless fact seekers are blind and dumb. Can't they read? An aquaintance showed me his pictures from two trips to Alaska. He mentioned, the oddity of the disappearance of the glacier he had hiked. Huh? Isn't that odd. Hey 2shoes, take a trip and educate yourself.
Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, just issued a report called The Impact of the 2011 Drought and Beyond which makes no mention of you know what. Dr Andrew Dessler of Texas A&M comments:
Texas is ground zero for the most immediate consequence of global warming: very hot drought conditions in subtropical continental interiors. At the rate things are going, Texas will be uninhabitable within a couple of decades.
