HRW Says Israel 'Failed' to Probe Gaza War Crimes
JERUSALEM - Human Rights Watch said on Sunday that Israel has failed to properly investigate alleged crimes committed during last winter's devastating Gaza war as demanded by the United Nations.

REUTERS/Ibraheem Abu Mustafa (GAZA - Tags: POLITICS) "Israel claims it is conducting credible and impartial investigations, but it has so far failed to make that case," said Joe Stork, HRW's New York-based group's deputy director for the Middle East.
"An independent investigation is crucial to understand why so many civilians died and to bring justice for the victims of unlawful attacks," Stork said in a statement.
About 1,400 Palestinians were killed during the 22-day onslaught launched by Israel on December 27, 2008, aimed at halting rocket attacks from the Islamist Hamas-ruled enclave. Thirteen Israelis were killed in the fighting.
The UN General Assembly in November called on Israel and Palestinian armed groups to investigate alleged war crimes detailed in a UN report by the respected former international war crimes prosecutor Richard Goldstone.
But UN chief Ban Ki-moon said on Thursday that he had not yet determined whether both sides had adequately probed the accusations.
Last Friday, the UN chief received a 46-page report from Israel in which it denied violating international law but admitted "tragic results" due to the "complexity and scale" of fighting in heavily populated areas.
In his report, Ban highlighted Israel's assertion that two of its senior officers -- a brigadier general and a colonel -- were disciplined for the firing of white phosphorous shells toward a UN compound during the war.
Also on Friday, the UN secretary general was handed a preliminary report from the Palestinian side in which it said a commission had been set up to look into allegations that Palestinian militants committed war crimes.
Hamas also carried out an investigation into the conflict, and has previously absolved its fighters of any wrongdoing, saying they did not deliberately target civilians.
HRW has rejected Hamas's claims, saying that most of the rockets fired during the war hit civilian areas. "Civilians were the target," the group said, and "deliberately targeting civilians is a war crime."
The Goldstone report published in September also said the firing of the hard-to-aim rockets at southern Israel deliberately targeted civilians and could constitute a crime against humanity.

Show AllLets hope the maxim " the wheels of justice turn exceedingly slow but grind exceedingy fine" occur here and in the USA wars of agression and multiple crimes.
Let's face it. Until israel isn't needed anymore, the western governments are going to do nothing. That includes puppet regimes, etc. Of course. They must know this as well.
There is far more to these alliances than meets the eye. As i have said before. Israel is probably a private contractor posing as a government at this time.
Everyone should see 'District 9'.
On a daily basis, Israel continues its ethnic cleansing process of the West Bank and Gaza thanks to US support. The International Solidarity Movement documents much of what is going on, but today it is reported that Israel is deporting another international activist, in this case, violating the Oslo Accords.

Gazans did not start sending rockets until after Israel had broken the ceasefire week after week after week and killed almost 50 Palestinians. The rockets are (1) Gaza's only defense against Israel's constant attacks by air and tank and soldiers on foot and (2) un-aimable and therefore cannot be targeted at anything or anyone.
Swampus: The Bureau of Indian Affairs should weep with shame. Can your senator and representative take this up with the relevant committees in both houses?
Convenient genocide all over the world. Like a Satanic ritual eating the soul of the planet.
Only an INDEPENDENT investigation will discover the truth about civilian killing by both Israel and Hamas.
Don't count on this present Administration in Washington to help make an independent investigation possible.
independentminded: your right I'm not counting on it.
HRW, by its disproportional focus on Israel, had failed to be a credible, reliable or neutral source of information.
Nearly 30% of HRW’s 2009 output on the Middle East condemned Israel for measures taken to defend its civilian population. HRW issued more publications critical of Israel than of Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Libya combined.
HRW, also failed to address its organizational scandals. Among those:
- a fundraising trip to Saudi Arabia led by MENA division head Sarah Leah Whitson, stressing HRW’s anti-Israel focus;
- the revelation that its “senior military analyst,” Marc Garlasco, is an obsessive collector of Nazi memorabilia, whose reports are unreliable;
- founder Robert Bernstein’s New York Times op-ed, decrying the organization’s role in “turn[ing] Israel into a pariah state” and its loss of “critical perspective” on Iran’s support for Hamas and Hezbollah.
Letto, where've you been? I thought you stopped posting after you missed the article posted the other day titled [Israeli Commander: 'We Rewrote the Rules of War for Gaza']
As usual we hear your blather coming form your nether end....
So you think NGOs such as HRW should be above criticism?
You think that Israel should be above criticism.
q
No.
Now how about HRW?
So, where is your criticism of Israel killing almost 1500 civilians, more than half of them being women and children?
Which hole did you hide in when the Israeli military officer was explaining how they rewrote the rules of war?
Care to answer these first? Or are you going to start blathering through your nether ends again?
First of all, you data is inaccurate in more than one way.

Horrified claim # 1: "Israel killing almost 1500 civilians"
The total number of Palestinians killed during the Gaza war was between 1166 and 1440. Some of them (between 236 and 709) were combatants. Some Palestinians were killed by Palestinian militants and not by Israel.
No one but you claim that Israel killed almost 1500 civilians.
----
Horrified claim # 2 "more than half of them being women and children"
According to the Palestinian ministry of health, 37% were woman and children. According to the IDF, less than 9% were woman and children.
No one but you, claims that than more than half were woman and children.
---
Having said that, I condemn any killing of innocent civilian. Palestinians or others. Israel should have done more to minimize the risks to Palestinian civilians. The Hamas should have done more by not starting the war, by not targeting civilians, and by not using civilians as human shield.
---
Now that I answered your questions as per your demand, it's your turn, Horrified. So what is it gona be? Are you going to find a new excuse? A new set of demands? Are you going to hide in a hole? or are you going to keep your word and tell us what you think about HRW misconducts?
The article is about Israels misconduct. If you want to talk about the 'misconduct' of HRW, why don't you write and submit for publication your own article about their dastardly denouncing of Israel.
Why oh why do I keep feeding this troll???
All I wanted to say is that HRW can't be trusted to be nutral and unbiased.
B.T.W DC will never publish an article about the misconduct of HRW.
This is according to Israel's puppets in the West Bank. The same puppet that gave up the farm to Isreal. The same puppet that allowed the Goldstone report to be sidelined. And you want me to believe your puppet??? Really??? you are truly a buffoon!!!
Also you can't read as comprehension is not your strongest ability.....Almost 1500 is an approximation and YOU validated it in your own post!
I never trust the IDF.....they are the most immoral army in the world! And they have been caught lying too many times...so don't make me laugh.
And you never condemned the IDF or Israel for killing the civilians.
BTW, how many Israeli civilians dies in that Israeli massacre? And how many Israeli soldiers were killed by the IDF?
You must really think any one who don't support the apartheid nation of Israel is a dumb fool.
"This news story will not be news to anyone bothering to read the Israeli papers as Israel was attacking Gaza last winter. IDF spokespeople made it very clear Israel was going to privilege Jewish soldiers’ lives over any concerns about war crimes. This argument is, in fact, part of the Goldstone report’s case against Israel.
Now an IDF commander from Gaza confirms what we knew all along. The significance, of course, is that Israel went on to commit war crimes (as it has itself admitted in the case of white phosphorous) and now the political climate is sufficiently charged that this commander is dropping a bombshell (pun intended)."
http://www.hybridstates.com/2010/02/idf-rules-of-engagement-in-gaza-allowed-killing-those-without-means-or-intentions-to-do-harm/
You just can't murder and maim that many civilians, especially children, without criminal intent.
Cast Lead was a pre-planned genocidal slaughter aided and abeted by the US government.
