President Carter and Citizen Activists Witness Destruction in Gaza
This week, a former President and now citizen activist, came to Gaza as other citizen activists have, to witness and speak about the destruction of Gaza. On June 16, 2009, former President Jimmy Carter spoke in unflinchingly blunt terms of devastating damage caused by the 22 day Israeli military assault on Gaza and the failure of the international community to help the citizens of Gaza after the military destruction of homes, government offices and industries.
Upon seeing the destruction of the American International School (one of seven schools completely destroyed in Gaza and 87 other schools severely damaged), Carter said "I have to hold back tears when I see the deliberate destruction that has been wreaked against your people," adding that he felt partly responsible because the school had been "deliberately destroyed by bombs from F-16s made in my country."
I was in Gaza the week before President Carter arrived, my third trip to Gaza in three months. Organized by CODEPINK: Women for Peace, we took 66 persons from ten nations and 18 American states to Gaza through the Rafah, Egypt border crossing in late May. Three additional groups totaling 73 persons led by delegates from CODEPINK's March, 2009 International Women's Day 60 person delegation also entered Gaza in late May through the Rafah, Egypt crossing. CODEPINK also took 45 persons in early June from three nations to Israel, in an unsuccessful attempt to cross into Gaza via the Erez, Israel border crossing.
In the three past three months, we have witnessed the destruction of much of Gaza and the silence of the international community to the pleas for assistance in the reconstruction of the homes of over 50,000 persons made homeless by the 22 day Israeli military attack on Gaza.
We have also witnessed the effects of the two year siege/blockade/quarantine by the international community on Gaza, collective punishment for the election of Hamas in 2006 as the government of Gaza.
For three months we have met the same residents of the Jabalyia area each day sitting in the wreckage that was their homes-waiting for help-and none has come, despite the pledges from many countries.
During his one day visit to Gaza, President Carter spoke strongly about the international blockade on Gaza and about arbitrary prohibitions by the Israeli government that have made travel into and out of Gaza by Palestinians virtually impossible, banned the import of all but basic goods and prevented reconstruction since Israel's three-week attack on Gaza ended in January, two days before President Obama's inauguration.
Carter said, "Tragically, the international community largely ignores the cries for help, while the citizens of Gaza are treated more like animals than human beings." He added, "Never before in history has a large community been savaged by bombs and missiles and then deprived of the means to repair itself. The responsibility for this terrible human rights crime lies in Jerusalem, Cairo, Washington, and throughout the international community," Carter said.
1.5 million people live in the tiny area (25 miles long and 5miles wide) of Gaza, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the world.
Carter said, "This abuse must cease. The crimes must be investigated. The wall must be brought down, and the basic right of freedom must come to you."
In the same speech to graduates of a human rights curriculum sponsored by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Gaza, President Carter referred to a CODEPINK delegation that had tried to enter Gaza with playground equipment through the Israeli Erez border crossing but were turned back.
Carter said, "Last week, a group of Israelis and Americans tried to cross into Gaza through Erez, bringing toys and children's playground equipment - slides, swings, kites, and magic castles for your children. They were stopped at the gate and prevented from coming. I understand even paper and crayons are treated as 'security hazards' and not permitted to enter Gaza. I sought an explanation for this policy in Israel, but did not receive a satisfactory answer - because there is none...."
CODEPINK's delegation in late May that entered Gaza through the Rafah, Egypt crossing was successful in breaking the blockade and brought three sets of playground equipment and toys and a variety of educational materials to the kids of Gaza.
Carter, as a private citizen not as a government envoy, met with senior members of Hamas, the political, economic and militant group that won sufficient Parliamentary seats in 2006 elections to gain control of the Palestinian Parliamentary Council. Hamas is labeled a terrorist group for having fired thousands of unguided rockets into Israel over the past 5 years.
According to research done
by Israeli human rights group B'Tselem (http://www.btselem.org/
According to UN figures, in 2005, 1,194 rockets were fired at Israel (an average of 100 a month), in 2006 the rocket fire increased to 1,786 (an average of 149 a month), and in 2007, 1,331 were fired (an average of 111 a month). According to Israel Security Agency figures, in 2008, 2,048 rockets and more than 1,672 mortar shells were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel (not including the period of Operation Cast Lead, which began on 27 December, during which the rocket and mortar fire increased significantly)
B'Tselem also reports that in the eight years from October 29, 2000 to December 26, 2008, the day before the Israeli attack on Gaza, 3000 Palestinians had been killed in Gaza and 1791 killed in the Occupied Territories (total 4791) by Israeli security forces.
During the same 8 year period,
237 Israeli civilians and 245 Israeli security forces (total of 482)
had been killed by Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. (http://www.btselem.org/
During the December, 2008-January 2009, 22 day attacks on Gaza, 1440 Palestinians were killed by Israeli military and over 5,000 were wounded.
13 Israelis were killed during the 22 days, including 3 civilians and ten Israeli military, five of whom were killed by their own Israeli military forces.
Former President Carter gave Hamas leaders in Gaza a letter from the family of Corporal Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier who was seized and taken into Gaza in June, 2006. Mr. Carter asked that the letter be passed on to the soldier, who is presumed to be alive. Senior Hamas official Ismail Haniya, who risked Israeli assassination in by making a public appearance with Carter, said Hamas was hoping to negotiate an "honorable deal" for Shalit's return to Israel in the form of a prisoner exchange. In contrast to the one Israeli held in Gaza, over 11,700 Palestinians (including 400 women and children) are imprisoned in Israel.
American and international
activists continue to work to educate government officials and citizens
about Gaza. On June 4, prior to President Obama speaking at Cairo
University, a CODEPINK delegation delivered to the US Embassy in Cairo
a copy of a letter from senior Hamas officials signed by deputy Foreign
Minister Ahmed Yousef inviting Obama to visit Gaza to see the destruction
for himself (http://www.commondreams.org/
The delegation also delivered to the US Embassy a petition signed by over 10,000 persons asking President Obama to visit Gaza.
Additionally, activists with
the International Movement to Open the Rafah Border who are in their
third week of camping at the Rafah, Egypt border have begun a hunger
strike to pressure the Egyptian government to let Palestinians join
their families in Gaza (http://www.facebook.com/
On June 25, 2009, the Free
Gaza Movement boat fleet will attempt to break the naval blockade on
Gaza (http://www.freegaza.org/en/
On July 4, 2009, an American
delegation will leave the U.S. for Gaza as a part of the Viva Palestina
convoy (http://www.vivapalestina-us.
Also, in August, a group of Canadian Members of Parliament will visit Gaza.
While many members of the U.S. Congress visit Israel, only seven have visited Gaza, and several of those have been targeted by the American Israeli Public Affairs committee (AIPAC) because of their statements of concern for Gaza. On the same day, February 22, 2009, Senator John Kerry and Congressmen Keith Ellison and Brian Beard, were the first members of Congress to enter Gaza in 5 years. They said they entered Gaza as private citizens, not government employees.
The U.S. State Department still bans travel for US government employees citing the kidnapping of 17 foreigners in Gaza from 2005-2007 and the deaths of three US government security contractors in 2003 who were killed while providing security to U.S. diplomatic personnel who were visiting Gaza to identify potential Palestinian candidates for Fulbright Scholarships. The State Department allows persons on government contracts to go into Gaza.
Citizen activists have been travelling to Gaza and upon their return, trying their best to educate government officials on Gaza. It is high time for the Obama administration to send US government officials, including Special Envoy George Mitchell, to Gaza to figure out the mechanisms for getting the $300 million the US has allocated for reconstruction in Gaza to the people of Gaza.- Posted in

Show AllThe genocide machine won't stop with Gaza, not with Lebanon, not with Syria, not with Iraq, and certainly not with Iran. The genocide machine won't stop with the whole of the Middle East. The genocide machine won't stop -- PERIOD.
The U.S./Israeli alliance from Hell hasn't even begun to show the world what it's capable of.

"talk about chutzpah": you got that right!
If you have not already read: "Beyond Chutzpah: the misuse of anti-Semitism and the abuse of History" Dr. Norman Finkelstein.
Just for speaking the truth, Finkelstein was passed over (despite successfully publishing more than his competitors) for tenure and fired from DePaul U. He has been barred from Israel, received death threats, been called a traitor and "self-hating Jew" repeatedly by right wing Zionists and their supporters.
This is what happens (also see Ward Churchill, Joel Kovel) when you are an academic and do not toe the AIPAC line. Academic freedom? freakin joke.

"The U.S./Israeli alliance from Hell hasn't even begun to show the world what it's capable of." Sadly, I agree with you, Kurt.
Not even the children of the Palestinians are safe from the casual brutality of Israel's soldiers. Here's a chilling report you won't see in the mainstream U.S. press:
"Shocking Testimonies: Brutalizing Palestinian Children." The findings by Defence for Children International (DCI) come in the wake of revelations from Israeli soldiers and senior commanders that it is “normal procedure” in the West Bank to terrorise Palestinian civilians, including children.

Add in the unrest in Iran, which one might hypothesize is supported by the US (see links below) and you have a number of puzzle pieces starting to fall together showing a picture of US hegemony in the middle east moving towards consolidation.

Thank you for these links. As you said, these stories reveal a very disturbing picture.
I wonder if Israel has a ratified constitution. If not how does it play into the equation of future land grabbing involving Israel's neighbors.
I wonder how Col Wright views dismissal of Dennise Ross by Obama?
Additionally, I'm asking Col Ann Wright to please contact me.
soon I'm filing defamation suits against several members of The Army.
I'm filing against The Army. This in measures relates to more than one article she wrote about Women in Iraq.
I'm a female.
As is now plain, Israel is nothing more than an immoral and illegal invasion, and I applaud those resisting the genocidal oppression.
When Netanyahu, and Avigdor Lieberman tell President Obama, and Hillary Clinton to go get FUC_ED, and Obama and Clinton just take it, then you know who is really in charge of our country.
Obama and Clinton's answer seems to be "Thank you sir can I have another?"
No, that's "Thank you sir can the US have another?"
I stand corrected.
While we can easily condemn Israel for its abject lack of morals and humanity, and I do, it bothers me most that we completely materially support these crawling criminals. They would wither away in the desert sun if we would only let them. These are our crimes. Jews should be protected from their suicidal government as it collapses under the weight of its hatred and war crimes. Religion sucks. Zionism sucks worse. The US will follow suit, albeit a bit more slowly due to our mass. A cancer has overtaken us, it seems.
Jews cannot be protected from their suicidal government
because Jews ARE the government.
The vast majority of Jews either directly or through acquiescence give a free hand to Israel, destroying everything in their path that might interfere.
But Israel is willing to talk with the Palestinians. It has written out a set of non-negotiable conditions that the Palestininians either sign or risk more Israeli firepower. Israel is the Prussia of the Middle east.
Prussia? Seems more like Nazis to me. And no, I'm not comparing the suffering of the Palestinians to the Holocaust.
The myth of Zionist imperialism
Jun. 17, 2009
eli kavon , THE JERUSALEM POST
Yehuda Alkalai is one of Jewish history's remarkable figures. Fifty years before Theodor Herzl convened the First Zionist Congress in 1897, Alkalai was agitating for the creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Alkalai, a rabbi who served the community in the capital of Serbia, was influenced by the events occurring around him. The Damascus Blood Libel in 1840 - the Muslim authorities framed, arrested and tortured the leaders of the Syrian Jewish community for ritually murdering a priest - convinced him that Jews needed a haven from anti-Semitism.
But there was another factor in Alkalai's Zionist quest that cannot be ignored: The Serbs were staging a national rebellion against their overlords, the Ottoman Empire. This fight against Islamic imperialism inspired him to ask why Jews were not engaged in a battle for their own national independence.
Delegates at the UN and professors on university campuses worldwide brand the State of Israel the creation of a racist and colonialist European imperialism. This libel of the Jewish state betrays an ignorance of the history of the Jews and the story of the Zionist movement. From the beginning, the Zionist movement has been a foe of imperialism. Rebellions of national independence against the Ottoman and Russian empires influenced precursors of the Zionist movement, such as Alkalai and Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer. Moses Hess, a socialist, looked toward Garibaldi's Italy as his inspiration for a Jewish homeland in Israel.
Herzl's concept of a Jewish state was based on the 19th-century liberal European nation-state. Even Vladimir Jabotinksy, an admirer of Mussolini's fascist regime, always stressed the influence of democracy on his political ideology. No major Zionist leader or thinker ever claimed that Zionism's goals were the imperialist domination of any other people. The accusation made by enemies of Israel that the Jewish state is an imperialist outpost of the West in the Middle East is a lie.
If the Zionist founders of the State of Israel were, indeed, imperialists, what empire did they represent? The pioneers who founded the modern State of Israel were young men and women who were fleeing pogroms and poverty in the Russian Pale of Settlement. It is true that Zionist founders such as Herzl looked toward imperial powers such as Britain and the Ottomans to back the building of a Jewish state. It is true that the Balfour Declaration of 1917 committed British imperialists to the creation of a Jewish home in Palestine. In the end, however, the British Empire betrayed the Jews of Europe to curry favor with the Arab world. It shut the gates of Jewish immigration to Palestine, abandoning the Jews to their fate in Nazi-occupied Europe.
THOSE WHO claim the Zionists have always been imperialists are actually racists. They deny the fact that although Jews lived in Europe and resembled the white-skinned Europeans with whom they lived, the Christians of Europe never believed Jews could ever be true Germans or Frenchmen. For more than a millennium, Christians and Muslims persecuted Jews, branding them inferiors and social outcasts, not caring what the color of Jewish skin was. We forget that racism is not only an issue of color. The Nazi regime destroyed 6 million Jews based on vile and false theories of Aryan racial superiority.
the above propaganda vs. reality...: Tel Aviv University political psychologist Daniel Bar-Tal, who I recently interviewed, found that “Israeli Jews’ consciousness is characterized by a sense of victimization, a siege mentality, blind patriotism, belligerence, self-righteousness, dehumanization of the Palestinians and insensitivity to their suffering.” Bar-Tal commented to me that the army is the primary vehicle for stoking the nationalism of young Israelis. “Some countries are states without armies,” he said. “But Israel today is an army without a state. There is no civilian institution capable of restraining the army’s influence.”
In an interview with me two days ago, the famed Israeli author David Grossman echoed Bar-Tal’s findings, remarking, “The country is trapped in one legitimate narrative: that of the government, which is of paranoia, and every event serves this narrative. Those events that don’t are simply overlooked.”
I have been in Israel for over a month; almost every day I hear expressions of paranoia about Arabs, historical delusions, and the constant refrain that “the world is against us.” I hear this even from some close friends — young, cosmopolitan Israelis living the good life in the so-called “bubble city” of Tel Aviv. Last week, a friend I play basketball with in a working class suburb of Tel Aviv (he is a high-tech worker from a fifth generation Israeli family) calmly informed me while we sat in the shade by the court: “I’m a Zionist, so of course I prefer the bloodshed on the other side.” While sitting at a bar with an elegant and otherwise charming young woman, she described to me while sipping a mixed drink how she arbitrarily shot at Arabs while serving in the army because “they want to come and steal my house.” On a leafy Tel Aviv street, a friend of a friend who splits time between spinning at local hip-hop clubs and patrolling the streets of Gaza City told me if Israel has to kill 800 Palestinians to save one Israeli Jew, then so be it. “If we wanted to, we could completely wipe Gaza out,” he said. “But we don’t because the IDF is pure.”...max blumenthal
thank you for your work, and for sharing these troubling insights w/ us.

Part 2
Racist hatred is not just a matter of hating a people for the color of their skin. The Holocaust is the ultimate proof of that. Europe and the Muslim world were never a home for the Jews. The empires of the Christian and Muslim world could have cared one iota about Jewish survival and the Jewish future. The Zionist enterprise was desperate and lonely. If only the Jews had the power of an empire, perhaps millions of Jews could have been saved from genocide. "Zionist imperialism" is an absurd phrase, an oxymoron. It is an anti-Semitic canard. It denies the tragic realities of Jewish history.
JEWS WERE AS much the victims of European colonialism as people of color in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The European imperialists never colonized a Jewish homeland but they did denigrate Jewish religion and Jewish culture. The emancipation of the Jews - the granting of citizenship to Jews 200 years ago in France - robbed them of their national identity and their sense of being a people. The Europeans were not believers in "cultural pluralism." They viewed the granting of citizenship as the first step of the disappearance of Jewish identity through assimilation into their societies and then conversion to Christianity.
After France emancipated its Jews, the imperialist Napoleon demanded that the Jewish notables of the French nation prove their loyalty to that nation, not to the Jewish people. Emancipation was humiliating. Jews in Europe bent over backward to prove their loyalty to Germany, France and England by denigrating their own culture and religious heritage as inferior and in need of reform. They were forced to betray their ancient loyalty to the Jewish nation by rejecting traditional Jewish identity. There were benefits that came with citizenship. But the costs in terms of Jewish identity, pride and dignity were disastrous. The Zionist movement rejected this form of "cultural colonialism." The emancipators denigrated Jews in their own backyard in the same way that they did so to people of color abroad.
FINALLY, TO BRAND Zionism as imperialism is to deny the connection of the Jews to the Land of Israel that goes back 3,000 years. Jews were battling imperialists, whether they were Hellenists or Romans, long before the modern national movements of liberation. The British in India, as well as the French in Algeria, did not have an ancient connection to the lands they colonized. The Europeans exploited native populations for reasons of economics and jingoism. Not so the Jews. The Jewish pioneers settled in Palestine to find a place to live as free men and women, free of the domination of imperialists in the European and Islamic world.
That the Arabs of Palestine suffered a catastrophe in losing their homes to Jews in 1948 was not due to "ethnic cleansing" but to their refusal to accept partition and their hatred of Jews that had its origin in the Islamic call for jihad against Jewish infidels. Today, half the Jewish population of Israel is made up of Jews from Arab and Islamic lands. To label as imperialist a small nation of Jews that flourished despite the power of great empires is absurd. It is an attempt to rob Israel of its legitimacy. It is a lie.
The writer is on the faculty of Nova Southeastern University's LifelongLearning Institute in Davie, Florida.
The lights are on, now lets watch the cockroaches scatter.
It occurred to me that you would be unable to address the article, but since your entire existence is wrapped up on your identity and strident tribal allegiance, it was obvious that you couldn't restrain yourself. But how would you approach it and maintain your denial? Spam on the poor beleaguered Jews as victims as if it were some kind of justification for the present brutality of Israel.
It is sad that you are incapable of recognizing the humanity of anyone other than your own tribe.
Israel is no more brutal than the arab nations surrounding it. You have a very one sided view of things. If you were truly even handed, you would point out that there are many nations with records far worse than Israel, but your hatred blinds you.
If you want to support your Khazarite state, do with your own nickel and not with US taxpayer funds.
Israel's relentless theft of Palestinian land and water resources, and extreme brutality toward the Palestinians, has pretty much trumped the "Holocaust" card. The Israelis have become the new Nazis, and the Palestinians are their victims, abandoned just as the world abandoned the Jews during the Third Reich.
Most Jews do not live in Israel, and don't want to. That's why Israel pays Jews to visit, and to "settle" on stolen Palestinian land. Increasing numbers of U.S. Jews are realizing that the Zionists are to Judaism as the Ku Klux Klan is to Christianity. Israel is a pariah, outlaw state, getting away with murder only because the U.S. protects and finances it.
You write, "The lights are on, now let's watch the cockroaches scatter." Here's another light to shine on the subject of Israel, a report about Israel's routine terrorisation of Palestinian children, including a report of an IDF officer who saw a little four-year-old playing in the sand in Gaza. The officer proceeded deliberately to break the child's wrist, then his leg, and then he stomped on the child's stomach. Four years old. May the cockroaches scatter:

Poppycock.
The VAST MAJORITY of Jews do their best to give free reign to Zionism.
The VAST MAJORITY of Jews either actively or passively participate in the DESTRUCTION OF PEOPLE'S CAREERS AND PUBLIC DEMONIZATION of people who respect the rights of Palestinians.
The VAST MAJORITY of Jews have ensured that only opportunists get elected so that they will support Zionism, eroding our body politic.
The VAST MAJORITY of Jews support any right-winger who supports Israel, destroying our civil liberties.
The VAST MAJORITY of Jews call Israel "The Homeland of the Jews".
The VAST MAJORITY of Jews propelled us into a destructive war, hollowing out our military and eviscerating our economy.
And now we're supposed to disbelieve what we are seeing with our own eyes.
'Poppycock. '
Exactly what your remarks are.
'The VAST MAJORITY of Jews do their best to give free reign to Zionism.'
You're an idiot. If the majority of Jews were zionists, we'd all be in Israel, fool.
'The VAST MAJORITY of Jews either actively or passively participate in the DESTRUCTION OF PEOPLE'S CAREERS AND PUBLIC DEMONIZATION of people who respect the rights of Palestinians.'
Yes, that is true. We defend ourselves against liars and street thugs like you, twit.
'The VAST MAJORITY of Jews have ensured that only opportunists get elected so that they will support Zionism, eroding our body politic.'
Yes, obviously 2 or 3% of the American population controls the elections. As I mentioned, you're and idiot.
'The VAST MAJORITY of Jews support any right-winger who supports Israel, destroying our civil liberties.'
Really? Then how is it that more than two thirds of Jews voted for Barack Obama? Your idiocy is growing by the line.
'The VAST MAJORITY of Jews call Israel "The Homeland of the Jews".'
Okay, I'll give you that one.
'The VAST MAJORITY of Jews propelled us into a destructive war, hollowing out our military and eviscerating our economy.'
Sorry, but that was Bush. Remember, he was down on his knees talking to Jesus, and Jesus told him to do it. You can't blame it on the Jews, moron.
'And now we're supposed to disbelieve what we are seeing with our own eyes.'
You just don't like Jews. Admit it. You're an anti-semitic thug, who blames Jews for his own lack of accomplishments in life. It's too bad you're such a loser, but that's not our fault.
Yes, the only response you have is to call me an idiot. Of course, the hilarious part is when you claim that I lack accomplishments when you have no idea.
You Zionists are true scoundrels.
I could take you apart step by step, but why bother when I doubt anyone with two brain cells to rub together gives you any credence?
How could you have any credibility when you claim that ONLY Bush and Jesus got us into the Iraq war? AIPAC had nothing to do with it. Hilarious.
Israel and their apologists, which include the vast majority of Jews, have turned themselves into moral monstrosities. And now you want to pretend otherwise so that you can continue your genocidal oppression.
Disgusting beyond belief.
it is not a matter of "the vast majority of jews" which though true statistically is, i think, a symptom of the activity of a human psycho-spiritual cancer, something beyond jewishness, the monstrous murdering and destroying thing which is the state which hides itself behind the name "israel".
Benny - which Hasbara propaganda website provide you with the drivel that you cut-and-pasted into these two articles?
Re the Palestinian ethnic cleansing in 1948, read your namesake Benny Morris before he became a Zionist propagandist himself.
I repeat; When the peoples of the world, especially the Jewish people can turn to stand with Rachel Corrie and say to the Palestinians, "You are our brothers and our sisters", that monstrous devouring entity, born of the psycho-pathological dreams of Theodore Herzl, David ben-Gurion, and others, the state that hides behind the name "Israel", can finally disappear and fall back into to the abyss in the human spirit from which it arose.
Ancient superstitions are fine as the bases for religions, but constitutional democracy requires a secular state.
No religion should have a homeland. Rather, let each person who's so inclined live up to the tennets of their faith, and so carry their homeland with them.
What a different world this would be if the golden rule---every major faith has a slightly different way of saying the same thing---were the basis for both domestic and international law.
'Ancient superstitions are fine as the bases for religions, but constitutional democracy requires a secular state.'
Israel is not intended to be a constitutional democracy. You've missed the point.
'No religion should have a homeland. Rather, let each person who's so inclined live up to the tennets of their faith, and so carry their homeland with them.'
Then I guess you're willing to tell all the ARABS to give up the THEOCRATIC rule they have established under Sharia law? Make way for Jews and Christians to live as equals? I think not. If the arabs can have have religious states, so can Jews.
'What a different world this would be if the golden rule---every major faith has a slightly different way of saying the same thing---were the basis for both domestic and international law.'
Agreed, but we don't live in Utopia. We have to make the best of what we have, which is imperfect human beings. For this reason, our states will also always be imperfect.
You continue to display what Zionism is - a moral monstrosity. Thanks.
Ben Martin June 18th, 2009 12:49 pm,
let's see -
european orgin,
modern state,
nationalist in character,
systemically denies rights to minority groups,
clustering those ethnic minorities in refugee camps (of course they're refugees b/c the israeli's now live on their land - where they have few rights under the current zionist regime) surrounded by soldiers,
relies on military might to resolve issues.
nazi germany or israel ?
your right ben, israel isn't an imperial power yet (although it has an imperial arsenal of weapons). it's more along the lines of your typical run of the mill fascist regime (nationalist in character).
that's why israel avoids conferences on human rights violations like the plague; fascist governments generally don't like to participate in discussions when their crimes against humanity are on display for the world.
but, irrespective of how one characterizes israel, you haven't negated the carnage the IDF has inflicted on children and elderly people in gaza (carter/code pink's observation), who harbored no ill will. they were civilians. do you have a heart mr martin ? or is it racist for me to suggest that your attitude towards these civilians is cold and heartless...
...peace...
good observation, notice the Zionists and their apoligists cloud the issue with historical anecdotes that conflate Jews and Zionists and often a bunch of religious mythology. The latest Likudnik troll, sprinkles in charges of anti-Semitism (whether one is Jewish or not) to anyone who criticizes the policies of Israel. The hypocrisy is overwhelming. Someone who condones ethnic cleansing, Apartheid, and white Jewish supremacy, accusing others, that alone is just plain pathetic.
The rights of the indigenous population are never addressed, nor international law; we could then ask these neo-Fascist racists: how is the Palestinian Problem to be solved? They are already living in horrendous conditions in the world's largest concentraion camps and refugee camps for decades. The next step appears to be Israel eliminating the rest of Palestine and either expelling them or exterminating them.
I agree. Expell them all and let them self govern. Period. No fifth column arabs in Israel. They should be encouraged to relocate to one of the arab nations with compensation for property loss, if they won't be good Israeli citizens. Seems strange that you're all okay with Jews being 'transferred' though. Oh yeah, it lets you get away with finished Hitler's work when the Iranians get the bomb, right?
The difference between the IDF and Hamas is that IDF forces do not DELIBERATELY target civilians. Do innocents get hurt fighting? You bet. But that is far different from what Hamas does with DELIBERATE targeting of civilians as a matter of policy. As to the incident you mention, there are of course, rogue soldiers. When these things happen, the IDF acts against those soldiers with prosecutions, when they are discovered. If you think you have evidence of acts committed and not reported, you should take action on that.
Whatever you say Mr. Cheney.
Right. They (IDF) just happen to wind up killing far more civilians than Hamas. IDF has an Air Force, Army and Navy. Hamas has a few crude missiles. From your point of view, that's ok, I suppose. Know of who lived in Israel fore 1948. Mostly Palestinians. Further, it wasn't the Palestinians who kicked out the Jews from Palestine 2000 years ago. Come to think of it, perhaps the IDF should bomb the Italians to even the score.
Actually, the IDF forces do DELIBERATELY target civilians, as during the recent Israeli massacre of Palestinians in the Gaza Ghetto, an outrage that mirrored the Nazi massacre of the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943. And in the IDF daily patrols in the West Bank. And in the IDF murders of peaceful protestors at the separation wall. To say nothing of the indirect murders Israel commits by not allowing Palestinians to leave Gaza and the West Bank for medical care.
It is too bad that the homemade Palestinian rockets that Israel pretends to fear so much have injured and killed some Israelis (who, by the way, were injured or killed while occupying land that they stole from the Palestinians). If you commit a home invasion of my house, do I have the right to resist? Yes. So do the Palestinians, whose pitiful rockets land on their own property, stolen by Zionists.
In any case, the homemade Palestinian rockets have no guidance systems, and are no match for Israel's weapons, all the latest from the U.S., including drones, fighter planes, the newest bombs, white phosphorus, flechette antipersonnel bombs, etc. If Palestinians could have the latest in war technology, too, they could target their weapons better.
You say the IDF "acts against (rogue) soldiers with prosecutions." But I'm sure you know that this rarely happens. Israeli Army data from 2000 to the end of 2007 revealed that the military police had indicted soldiers in only 78 of 1,268 investigations. Most soldiers received minor sentences. And the point of the story I referred you to before, at

is that brutality toward Palestinian civilians, including children, is not the act of "rogue" soldiers, but the routine behavior of IDF troops.
exactly, well stated...
raining white phosphorus on a school sheltering civilians (where they were told to go) is targeting civilians. casually shooting activists drawing attention to what is happening on the ground is targeting civilians.
denying palestinians food, medicine and the necessities of life is also targeting the entire palestinian population in gaza.
it's disturbing that people intentionally choose to ignore the disparate numbers (relative to casualties b/w israelis and palestinians) ann wright provides in her article.
...peace...
'Actually, the IDF forces do DELIBERATELY target civilians, as during the recent Israeli massacre of Palestinians in the Gaza Ghetto, an outrage that mirrored the Nazi massacre of the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943. And in the IDF daily patrols in the West Bank. And in the IDF murders of peaceful protestors at the separation wall. To say nothing of the indirect murders Israel commits by not allowing Palestinians to leave Gaza and the West Bank for medical care.'
Oh sure, Israel has forcibly evacuated Gaza, and shipped them all to killing centers. It's obvious! How could I have missed it! What a tragedy that Israel won't allow terrorists free reign. How come none of their other neighbors let them in either? Hmmmmmm. Idiot.

Ah yes, the old cannard of 'stolen land'. Is there any part of Israel you would allow to exist? Probably not, because you want Jews dead, so bus bombings, restaurant and marketplace bombings are okay. Moron.

Yeah right, they would target their weapons better. You're an idiot. Their chief weapon until recently was suicide bombers, which are extremely accurate. How did they use them? To target civilians. You're a Nazi. Oh, wait, I guess that's a compliment on this site.

If you want the 'brutality' to stop, the answer is simple. Tell the ARAB states to recognize Israel's right to exist, stop attacking Israel with terrorism, clean up the corruption in the 'palestinian' government, give up the noxious notion that they are going to be allowed back into Israel for the sole purpose of destroying it, and we'll be fine.
You Zionists are so used to getting your way no matter how ridiculous your assertions,
that when someone confronts you over your lies and distortions
you just ride off the rails.
"there are, of course, rogue soldiers". Yes, and there are rogue countries, like Israel. And there are rogue humans, as you illustrate, maybe are. Be a man, Mr. Martin, and stand up for human decency, no matter the nation violating its clear tenets. Israel's behavior is dooming its' very existence, as it should. It will be bullets and undeclared nuclear warheads that will allow it to persist in its' isolationist and racist arrogance. Israel, the state, has never been on it's own. It has been at the world's teat for its entire existence, yet, has the audacity to thumb its nose at any suggestion for its being a law abiding neighbor. Yes, law abiding. This appears to be your uncomfortable reality. And, I believe a nuclear armed Iran to be essential to thwarting your Greater Israel land grab.
...In late 2007 Israelis were shocked by the testimonies collected by clinical psychologist Nufar Yishai-Karin from 21 soldiers with whom she shared her military service during the early 1990s. The soldiers told her of incidents in which bystanders were shot or assaulted. In one of the most disturbing testimonies, a soldier said he had witnessed his commander attacking a four-year-old boy playing in the sand in Gaza. “He broke his hand here at the wrist. Broke his hand at the wrist, broke his leg here. And started to stomp on his stomach, three times, and left ... The next day I go out with him on another patrol, and the soldiers are already starting to do the same thing.” Such revelations have grown in number since the Breaking the Silence began drawing attention to the army’s mistreatment of Palestinians in 2004.

...In Hares, Ihab Shamlawi, a university student, recalled watching as a high school pupil asked soldiers permission to go to the bathroom. "They put him on the floor, they kicked his legs and beat him," he said. Ten or 15 other soldiers were watching, Mr Shamlawi recalled. "They all laughed...ben lynfield, writing from hares, west bank.
And here's some more of the same: Israeli Border Policemen like to video themselves abusing Palestinians, and they often post the videos on youtube.com.

Soldiers film themselves humiliating a Palestinian youth
These Israelis are truly sadistic monsters.
Killing civilians by BOTH sides is shameful. When will it all end? Israelis and Palestinians are all victims.
schach, in the case of israel/palestine/gaza we are not speaking about a level playing field.
It will end when you Zionists reparate the world for the evil you have brought, pack your bags, and leave in shame.
Israel is an immoral and illegal invasion, and I applaud those resisting the genocidal oppression. The world would be better off without Israel.
