I want to write about the suffering of my people and my family in these days of siege against the people of Gaza. 888 people have been killed and more than 3700 injured. The Red Cross has accused the Israeli military of repeatedly refusing to allow ambulances to go to Zeitoun area, so those who are injured become those who die; a premeditated and purposeful violation of human rights.
In my house we can't get basic needs. No food. No bread. No fuel. No future. Yesterday, my father went to the bakery at 5 AM. He waited 5 hours to get one loaf of bread, which is not enough for my family because there are 11 of us. So today it was my turn. I went to all the bakeries -- all were closed.
There is no safe place we can go. We cannot communicate with our relatives and friends -- networks are down as missiles rain on our homes, mosques and even hospitals.
Our life is centered around the burials of those who have died, our martyrs, At night our camp, Jabalya Refugee Camp, is a ghost town, with no sounds other than those of Israeli military aircraft.
There is a horror in every minute and it is clear especially in the lives of children. For example, there were five sisters in one family killed from the Israeli occupation while they stayed in their home. But there are 800,000 other children in Gaza, all afraid, all waiting for someone or something to help them. They are caught in a prison that is becoming a concentration camp. Every day we sleep and open our eyes to the Israeli crimes of killing children and women and destroying civilians' homes. My words are unable to convey my feelings about this life in Gaza.
I have two messages to the world, to those who claim they love peace and seek freedom.
Imagine your life consisting of no electricity, destroyed homes, the sounds and strikes of missiles, day and night, and the only hunger as great as that for food is the hunger for an end to this occupation and siege. Imagine it is not just you but your children and your family who tell you through their eyes and cries: "We are afraid of the missiles." "We cannot sleep." "We may never sleep again." Imagine you are the dam and the river of blood has turned into a flash flood. How long could you stand it?
We wouldn't have to stand it any longer if the world stood with us. If they demanded an end to the siege and the killings and demolition of houses for our children. If they demanded assistance reach the people through rallies and sit-ins.
Finally, I invite you to come to Gaza and see the Holocaust. Because despite the siege, the barriers, the killing of my people and homes, and the total destruction of our lives by the Israeli occupation, they can not and will not kill the will of our people for equality and justice.

I just do not understand how the Israelis can justify killing innocent people when their relatives experienced the Holocaust.

Well Palestinians are semetic with 20% christians too unlike the Ashkenazi squatters. This attack on densely populated imprisoned people is unforgivable. No-body believes the lies about rockets or the ceasefire being broken by Hamas. Hamas won 45% vote for Legislative Council and Israel with her allies immediately undermined the elections by creating an armed Fatah force to instigate an uprising and civil war. It then deemed Hamas terrorist and continues to play Abbas and his compliant regeime where it knew it would never have to face resisting to its illegal occupation. Throughout, its murderous wars it continued to manufacture more enemies as it joined the 'war on terror' and enhanced its standing as 'the only democracy in the middle east'. There is no use reasoning with this rogue state. it does't compromise. It robs cheats subverts and expands. Its poisonous tentacles reach into the heart of democracies everywhere and it is financed by bankers who direct and propogandise populations to confused sleep. If we citizens don't stand up to their apologists we will all end up like Gazans to-day. Are we too defensless and do we too terrified? Who do the armed forces serve? Nobody seems to know what to do? Cannot break the law. But Israel can with impunity and our political classes can support it doing so in our name? And they have the never to call this a war? The US and EU are loosing their soul too in Gaza now. Unless and until and with the agreement with the Palestinian natives it abides by International Law, removes itself from illegal occupation initially to it's pre-1967 borders, removes itself from Syria and Lebanon, abides by current United resolutions, and allows for a comprehensive peace with its neighbouring countries, gives up its claim to Jerusalem and opens its borders to the return of refugees from the Palestinian diaspora, dismantles its nuclear facilities and pays sustainable long term compensation, is brought to justice for war crimes and theft of resources, this state cannot possibly have 'a right to exist'.

Your writing brought tears to my eyes. As an American Jew, I condemn in the strongest terms the bombing and aggression against the people in Gaza begin committed by Israel with American weapons. The U.S. gov't has long given Israel a carte blanche even so far as ignoring war crimes.
I will continue to write politicians here (not that they ever seem to wake up) and act in whatever small ways I can to promote a ceasefire and some kind of lasting peace -- whether a two state solution (which seems like history at this point) or preferably a single multicultural democracy for all within Palestine/Israel.
Currently we have a land grabbing Israel with "settlers" attempting to carve up the West Bank. The result is a system of apartheid.
The Israeli blockade must stop. Borders must be opened. Gaza has been living under a state of siege, not to mention Israeli incursions that killed (I believe) more than 20 Palestinians during the last truce. Yet, Hamas did in large part abide by the truce. During a three month period something like three rockets were fired from Gaza; ZERO Israelis were killed.
If Israel wants Hamas to halt rocket fire, it must stop killing Palestinians. To achieve this it needs to open a dialogue. Certainly I want to see peace for all concerned, but as long as Israel cages in Gaza and continues its "targeted" killings of Palestinians, peace will be impossible.
It's time for American Jews to apply whatever pressure we can to the U.S. government and the new Obama administration.

I know you probably will not believe that but it is true. I have no doubt that you love your children like I love mine. But here is the thing. Stop fighting or else your children are going to have NO FUTURE! YOU GUYS LOST! If Gaza would agree to stop shooting rockets at Israel and mean it, this would all be over tonight. Lies will never make sense. You broke the last two ceasefires. The self imposed ceasefire was after Hamas won the election and refrained from attacking israel for one year even while israel slaughtered and kidnapped a couple dozen of its duly elected leaders. You broke the last ceasefire when you killed five Palestinian Hamas in one car. Only then did the rockets come and that would have ceased if you lifted the blockade.How many israelis have been killed by Hamas in the last ten years? The Irgun was created as a response to the Arab Revolt of 1929 when the Arabs of Palestine started massacring the Jewish residents of Palestine...FYI.
The Irgun turned against the British once the 'White Papers' were publish. Further when British soldiers were found to have tortured a number of young Jews for information the Irgun published a hit list of British targets. Sadly the Irgun believed in the old 'eye for an eye' philosophy.
As for the King David Hotel, it was the head quarters for the British intelligence in Palestine. The Irgun called and warned that they had planted a bomb in the building and that they were going to blow it up but for some reason the British thought it was just a hoax. The British government later admitted that they had received 3 separate notices about the bomb but that nobody was in position to act!!
How many Israeli's do you think would be dead if Israel did build bomb shelters in almost every home? Maybe Hamas should try to built bomb shelters instead of tunnels next time....
The "country" that you racist, ethnic cleansing Jews would promise the Arabs would just be a collections of Apartheid style townships. A full retreat to the 1967 borders, a right of return, a free, Arab East Jerusalem and transfer or removal of the settlements, would already constitute an enormous concession on the part of the Palestinians.

I agree with you on nearly all of that. The Wall needs to be pulled back b/c it is a blatant land grab, the settlements are inexcusable, and the coast of Palestine needs to be open. Palestine needs to be a free self sustainable nation side by side with Israel.
I just can't see it happening without the rockets halted. The UN, EU and US will not demand Israel do these things as long as rockets are landing in Israel. It won't happen and if we are to see peace in our life times then you must see that the Hamas rocket fire is only prolonging the Palestinian suffering. If feels good to stand up to oppression, it's human nature, but i doesn't serve any good. Even Russia has ignored the plight of the Palestinians civilians b/c of the actions Hamas has made!
I will however challenge the description of it being an ethnic cleansing, it is more accurately described as a simple indifference to the Palestinians. Israel is basically just another big U.S. military base full of American made killing tools. Military service is mandatory for Israeli men and women alike. Making all buildings/homes on that military base legitimate rocket targets for Palestinian resisting there oppressors, because those Israeli homes and buildings hold WMD's or soldiers that use them.

It CAN be given justification, and people can try to say that it is justified, but our higher nature and the truth of people's innate connection with all other people would tell us that it is never justified. The Israeli narrative typically is one of we are just defending ourselves from the Palestinian rockets, however this narrative is highly inaccurate.
Hamas did observe the last truce -- far better than did the Israelis whose "targeted" killings resulted in more than 20 Palestinians dead in Gaza. During that time I believe ZERO Israelis were killed.
The blockade is a form of warfare. Blocking medicine, food, fuel is a form of warfare. Firing on a UN school and killing dozens in Gaza is an war crime if done intentionally -- and indeed Israeli officials defend such an attack as necessary and the fault of Hamas (a twisted logic if I've ever seen one).
Moral??? Leaving children to die of starvation alongside their dead relatives? Moral??? Firing upon a UN school and killing dozens? Moral??? Firing upon ambulances? Moral??? Killing a UN relief driver? Moral??? At best, there have been severe lapses of morality. But the whole invasion and blockade themselves are immoral acts.
I would ask you to reconsider you claim of morality.
Also, let's remember that Israel sought to overthrow Hamas after it won the last round of elections. This plan has totally backfired and only split Fatah and Hamas, thereby further reducing prospects for peace.
The settlements in the West Bank and are a clear land grab. Conditions in the West Bank are those of apartheid.
Now, the Arab Israeli parties have been banned within Israel. How democratic is that?

Thank you for your civility. The point I have been trying to make here, is that it is not about the "Competing narratives". It seems like what I have found on this board is that people can't wait to attack my narrative and extol the virtues of their narrative. My point is that it does not get anything accomplished. Lets say for arguments sake that your narrative is right and my narrative is wrong.
My point was and continues to be. That the Arabs lost the war. Moral, immoral, right, wrong, it is beyond the narrative.
Israel is here to stay. Large blocks of Settlements are here to stay. Jerusalem is never going to be divided, and the "Palestinian right of return" is never going to be realized.
That has nothing to do with competing narratives, it is just the facts on the ground. Given those facts we can either scream and yell about how unfair they are, or we could try to accomplish a peace that will give Mohammed and his family a chance to live.
That is all I am saying.

Thank you for engaging in dialogue. I think that is a starting point -- and an important one, as is your desire for a peace that will give Mohammed and his family a chance to live in safety and security.
If Israelis truly want peace then I think they (who hold greater military power and are the occupying power) will have to remake those facts on the ground. Just to use one of your examples, the settlements are a huge roadblock to peace as they divide up the West Bank into small cantons. I think Israelis have to find away to remove the settlements. If not, in my view, the situation on the ground looks a lot like South African apartheid.
In terms of Gaza, I think Israel has to open a dialogue with Hamas, although the hundreds of Palestinians killed (many many of them non-combattants) will make this very difficult to achieve. Israel should announce its willingness for a ceasefire --and concurrently halt attacks, open borders fully to humanitarian aid, and open talks with Hamas to achieve a fuller truce.
I suppose this could be brokered through Tony Blair (although his position of no dialogue with Hamas is in my view an absurd one).

I agree with your point about a need for dialogue, the problem to tell you the truth, is that beside you, no one else here seems to want a dialogue. They want to call me a nazi and a murderer and a dip#@$% and all sorts of other choice names. I just do not need all the negativity aimed at me. I would love to dialogue with you. But I think that this format is not the place. The anger and hate espoused here just are not conducive to meaningful dialogue and frankly not conducive to the peacefulness of my day. I obviously am not going to give me email out over this board. If you come up with an idea, I would love to continue with this.

I'm somewhat hesitant to post my email as well - (I just noticed a fairly hateful comment that looks like it was directed against my post). I'm not sure if there is a way to transmit an email in private. I'll email the webmaster and ask.
The issues are really heavy ones, and people respond with a mix of venting (wanting to do something to halt the violence) and discussion.

There is another side to this. Believe me I am as convinced that we are right as you are that we are wrong. I am not going to go into the reasons why, I think that it is pointless to argue them with you, but you can know that I absolutely believe that we are the good guys in this conflict.
True there have been just over a dozen people killed in the last 7 years by rockets, but can you understand that that is an unacceptable number? And the number of rockets are over 8 thousand! Normal life in the South of Israel can not exist with that fact. The first priority of a nation is to protect its people.
So we have a couple of options. One is that we could totally surrender, and give in to all of Hamas's demands. Or we are FORCED to defend ourselves.
The problem is we are fighting a foe that uses woman and children as human shields. That is a well documented fact.
But none of this really matters. I mean whether you think I personally am a monster, or whether France and Saudi Arabia think that Israel is an aggressor, doesn't matter. Read all of the responses to my post. No one gets it. No matter what you think Israel believes it is facing an existential threat and it is going to defend itself. Because it is defending itself against an enemy that uses civilians to hide behind, civilians are going to die.
The only way to stop this is for the Arabs to realize the fact that THEY LOST. Israel is going to continue to exist, and the more they struggle against it instead of building a noble society, the more they are going to be buried in their own blood and hate.

I am somewhat puzzled by your references to "the Arabs" it is my understanding that Israel has been at war with several countries, it has not been as yet forced to fight the entire Arab world, should it have to do so its existence will be dependent upon as it always has the support of America.
Without USA support it is doubtful that Israel would be the military power that it is, make no mistake Israel exists as it is because USA chooses to make it so, Israels status as a regional power is dependent on USA's status as a superpower, if at that time when America finds that it cannot support Israel, Israel has not found a way to live peacefully with its neighbors it is likely that Israel as a nation will not be able to sustain itself, Israels existence (America will not be a superpower for ever), is dependent on achieving peace not war.

It seems so sad to me that "fighting" is always easier than "not fighting". Israel is already under much pressure again (news for you Mr. Olmert: people dont like pictures of dead children. these pictures make people think that something horrible is going on).
And Israel has already shown that it is still willing ... to let the Palestinian people pay the prize. By fighting, Hamas is not able to stop anything of this. Why not turn non violent RIGHT NOW? You know, like declaring: "We unilaterally stop fighting activities. We demand and will support UN troops right here; right now".
Thing is - throwing stones or firing "rockets" did not SAVE a single Palestinian life.
If Hamas would stop fighting now ... imagine how this would look to the rest of the world.

The Israeli central Elections committee have decided to ban the Balad party with a vote of 21 to 8. Balad party wanted equal rights for all of the citizens of Israel reguardless of nationality or ethnic identity. The ruleing Kadima party said this would undermine the Israel identity as a jewish state.
This is not democracy in Israel so they must be a terrorist state under their own and US rules. Look at the reason America is in so many different parts of the world in the name of democracy.

The suffering in Gaza is grievous and terrible, and is horrific to see and read about. However, it was caused by Hamas lobbing rockets into Israel, and I imagine that the entire world by now is familiar with the way Israel handles attacks on her people; she has been responding in this same way for years, on every occasion she is provoked. Why approve of Hamas' action in beginning this latest round of attacks, particularly when Hamas and Gazans, as well as the rest of the world, knows full well that Israel does not placidly accept attacks upon her citizens without retaliation? It is time for both sides to grow up - you are the same people, with the same issues, suffering equally - the conflict is absurd, tragic and utterly ridiculous, and both sides are like squabbling children determined to have their way - except that THESE squabbling children commit murder. Why?

I'm sorry, but Hamas lobbing a few rockets into Israel had NOTHING whatsoever to do with the current incursion into Gaza. The operation was planned months ago, and Israel has been jabbing a stick in Hamas' eye trying to provoke a response so that lame western (especially U.S.) media conglomerates could say "in retaliation for..."
The ceasefire was broken BY ISRAEL on November 4 when IDF soldiers entered Gaza and killed a Hamas political leader (and some non-Hamas civilians for good measure). Hamas felt compelled to respond.
Easy for us to say "lie there and take it! Let them pick you all off one-by-one until there are none of you left, the last of you dying peacefully, without having resorted to violence". No, I think most of us would rather die on our feet fighting back, regardless of the fact our weak blows had no real impact, than to lie there being kicked to death.
How much indignity? How many more settlements? How many more forced evictions? How many more humiliating checkpoints? The Gaza Strip has been hermetically sealed off, including its border with the Mediterranean. Since pro-Zionist Americans like Asshole Bloomberg of NYC like to trot out the same old inaccurate and nonsensical "Imagine if Americas", let's do the same: what if Venezuela were to seal off all access to the U.S. via the Atlantic Ocean?

What would you have Gazans do as they are blockaded without necessities for months and years? My view is that Israel planned the bombardment for cynical reasons related to their own elections. It would have happened no matter what.
The only benefits of Hamas NOT firing rockets would have been to spare 9 Israeli lives and to deny the Israelis an excuse to kill 900 Gazans. But then, their choices are dire. Gazans would have languished there, unnoticed, until hunger and disease forced them to find refuge elsewhere.

I am deeply ashamed of my country's leadership and most of its people. Mohammed, there are people here who care about you and your family. We are calling Congress, writing letters and emails and editorials, demonstrating on the streets of our cities, donating $$ to relief orgs etc. We are not in the majority and we have no power but we are not silent about the massacre of the Palestinians in Gaza.

Speaking as a jew who has been standing up for many years, i can tell you that israeli leaders and their backers care as little about someone like me, as Gw bush cares about any one of us. That is just the facts on the ground...
It is amazing ...today i had the privilege of having a conversation with a survivor of world war 2...an italian gentleman with very clear memory and had strong views about what is happening...
he put it down this way:
"there is so much INEQUITY and inequality and injustice in the world today ....the events in Wall Street, the economy, money, these crooks running the world --- they are examples of that.....and they lead to such things as the events in Gaza and israel ...and they remind me of what it was in world war 2 ...of how inequities eventually led to fascism and the holocaust...i was also tortured and i was only a young teenager....and today -- it makes me want to rail at the governments such as in the United States and Israel for being the leaders in these inequities .....this is as pure an evil as the Nazis and Fascists did in europe"...
and he was practically crying and choking as he said those words...an old gentleman who still follows the news avidly ....i was really STUNNED at his remarks -- he practically CONDEMNED the US government and israel for becoming what he said "the nazis of our time".
There should be stricter requirements for leaders in this world. So far, the ones who have been using this world as their personal ego builder are going to cause the end of all of the generations to come. Israel is a good example.
The sorry part is none of them will suffer for what they have done. They, like Bush, will insist they helped the world, not hurt it.
Since their cohorts do nothing to end their delusions, they are convinced history will see their leadership as they do.
Unless people change the standards upon which their leaders are chosen, nothing will ever change.
