Cheney Says Obama Should Keep Terror Policies
WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney said Wednesday it would be a mistake for President-elect Barack Obama to scrap the Bush administration's terrorist-fighting policies designed to prevent future attacks on the U.S.
"It would be a tragedy if they threw over those policies simply because they had campaigned against them," Cheney said in an interview with CBS Radio's Mark Knoller. "I think they need to proceed very cautiously before they begin to change the policies that are in place. They need to know what they're doing."
Obama has criticized practices that he says amount to torturing detainees during interrogations and has promised to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
"He was rather critical during the campaign of some of the policies we pursued, for example, in terms of terrorist surveillance or interrogation of terrorist prisoners," Cheney said.
"If I had advice to give it would be, before you start to implement your campaign rhetoric you need to sit down and find out precisely what it is we did and how we did it, because it is going to be vital to keeping the nation safe and secure in the years ahead."
The Terrorist Surveillance Program was secretly authorized by Bush shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and was disclosed in late 2005, sparking questions about its legality. The Bush administration vigorously defended the program as essential to national security, but brought it under the purview of the federal Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which requires investigators to obtain a warrant from a secret court in Washington to eavesdrop on suspected terrorists inside the country.
In the wide-ranging, 20-minute interview in his West Wing office, Cheney also debunked his public persona as someone who worked behind the scenes controlling the levers of the Bush presidency.
"The notion that somehow I was pulling strings or making presidential-level decisions. I was not," he said. "There was never any question about who was in charge. It was George Bush. And that's the way we operated. This whole notion that somehow I exceeded my authority here, was usurping his authority, is simply not true. It's an urban legend, never happened.
Cheney also said the financial rescue plan was essential to keeping the finance system functioning. He said that he viewed the automobile bailout as a "stopgap" and that the industry will have to find a way to become a viable industry again. And he said that while the Republican Party currently is in a "trough," he was not worried about the future of the party.
Asked to identify the biggest misimpression people have about him, Cheney laughed and said, tongue-in-cheek: "That I'm actually a warm, lovable sort."
Cheney said he wasn't troubled by the fact that there were some people who felt hatred for him.
"It goes with the turf," he said. "No, we got elected in one of the closest elections in American history in 2000. Some people never got over that. And then I've had to, in my capacity as vice president, be actively involved in some very tough decisions that some people find controversial."

Show AllI was going to wax on poetically about all the rot that has seeped into the world since Cheney and his minions have been in charge...
ahhh fuck it...
drop dead Cheney
and...while you're at it, tell Phil Gramm he can come as well.
Even the most ignorant person realizes that the Cheney/Bush Terror Policies have been counterproductive when it comes to reducing terror in the world. I am absolutely sure that Cheney realizes this. Therefore, what to make of his recommendation to continue digging in the hole?
1. Halliburton and thus, Cheney, are making a mint off the GWOT and Cheney wants to keep it coming. This would be a typical Republican value, keep it coming.
2. Cheney has a sick fascination with people being killed. Would you expect something different from a person who hunts farm raised quail and advocates torture?
3. He is getting even with all the people who laughed at him when he was so blatantly wrong about the Soviet Union and his recommendations that Reagan ignored. This one is less likely because the connection is tenuous.
4. He figures that in the wide open spaces of Wyoming, he can hide indefinitely from the wrath of the American citizenry, while at the same time through the wonders of modern communication, reap the benefits of his giveaways to his class.
Are there other suggestions?
It would take a strange syllogism, but if he doesn't understand what torture is he doesn't understand what lovable is. Mr. Cheney it is time for you to exit the stage. Sit quietly in the wings, pretend it is an undisclosed location. I hope that the next time I see you the stage will be a courtroom in The Hague. You will be in defendant's chair and I will be in the witness chair giving my victim's statement.
I agree with almost everything GoldStarMom1 states, but for anyone to create such atrocities as Cheney has, you truly can not call Cheney human. So I must correct you in your use of the term "him", the correct term is an "IT". Great points GoldStarMom1,other than referring to this war criminal freak as something human.
Their terror policies really suck big time! Where is the point in starting an expensive war that's not going to change the basic problem of terrorism? When all they have to do is go after the criminals involved like Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda. The Republican's knowledge of how to deal with terrorism is the worst I have seen recently. These people don't ever learn anything from their mistakes do they? All the damage they did in Iraq and Afghanistan both have bankrupted us. But, hasn't done a damned thing for terrorism but make it worse. All they can think of is continue on with these failed policies? Obama needs to go back to what Clinton did. Go after the actual perpetrators, try them and put them in jail. Do it the good old fashioned American way. You know like the FBI going after those responsible and making them answer for their crimes. If I remember correctly the first WTC bomber is still in jail and Timothy McVeigh was executed for Oklahoma City. But, I realize that is to simple for simple minded people like Republican's.
Dick Cheney played a big part in bringing a Holocaust to Iraq !!!!
Years of sanctions then the big one the shock and Awe invasion.
We have heard of the 4,000 + Americans "sacrificed" but do any Americans know or care about the over 1 MILLION Iraqis murdered as a result of the invasion ++++ the 1.5 Million who "perished" under the US sanctions before that ??
All based on obvious lies & 9/11 -- then "its kept us safe" USA USA USA !!!!!!!!!
Send him to the Hague or has the Hague been declared a terrorist organization ??

Cheney, you ignorant slut. Your bullshit and subversion has only helped to endear America to all of the other third-rate, torture-loving sociopaths in your party. I we had a time machine, I'm sure that the first trip could be well spent by going back to the day of your birth and convincing the doctor to slap your mother for conceiving you.
The top ten things for Dick Cheney to do while in retirement:
10. Stand too close to a very powerful microwave oven.
9. Slide under a gas truck and taste your own blood.
8. Offer to have yourself subjected to waterboarding in a nationally-televised public service ad.
7. Undergo a chemical peel on your scrotum with your hands tied behind you.
6. Have your penis bitten off by Ann Coulter on national TV.
5. Lock yourself in a damp room with Al Franken and Boy George... for a month... with nothing to eat except your own feet.
4. Practice fellatio on a rattlesnake.
3. Join George Bush in a hearty toast using a strong batch of Jonestown Kool-Aid.
2. Become the first Vice-President in history to slap themselves to death with a large rubber dildo... during your last official press conference.
And the number one pasttime for DIck Cheney's retirement is...
1. Catch a fatal venereal disease after being brutally butt-raped by Saddam's zombie corpse.
Die. Dick. Die.
Good Dick.
Snarl? Lovable? Laughable! As we chanted at G.W.'s inauguration on the corner of Constitution and K streets in DC: "Bush needs a brain. Cheney needs a heart".

One of several war criminals,
this man amongst others have opened pandora's box, the world is now terrorised and the crusade running smoothly. No punishment can meet the crime. Unfortuneately....Loud noise for life???
dick cheney lovable? Oh, come on, give me a break! It would be easier to love a quacking duck, a mallard. the world is alright today. today the world is alright. thank god for that anyway, huh? hate cheney? nah, can't hate him. Can debunk him though and he knows it. he knows he's already been debunked. it's always cute to lose in a way. that's why so many of us do it all the time. if we're cute enough times we might just become good looking. after awhile though, after many malformed starts, we realize too, that our method was madness and we did not have the key. Cheney is one such man. Most of us are Cheney-like, too. But we're not involved in the USA. I know about fifty people who would take over the world if they were president. I thank god every day that my friends aren't president. But cheney was, well, almost. Sad. For all of us. All of us who do our little power games on the people around us or cower within a non-cocoon of utter non-protection. Cowards all, sometimes, me, you, Cheney, just living the dream and making the people around us pay for it. We all need to straighten up.
First Kissinger talking about what a wonderful opportunity Obama will have to pursue a "new world order." Now Darth Cheney counseling caution before Obama begins any reparation on BushCo's illegal shredding of the U.S. Constitution.
Maybe I'm just paranoid, but the rhetoric of these two war criminals feels more to me like veiled threats than well intentioned advice. Most people now know 9-11 was not the work of outsiders and Cheney is widely believed to have been one of the hands-on coordinators that day.
Yes, I think they're sending Obama a message here: "You wanna stay healthy, you don't upset the PNAC agenda."
"Cheney laughed and said, tongue-in-cheek: "That I'm actually a warm, lovable sort.""
I'm sure Satan won't even find you lovable, Mr. Cheney.
But Obama shouldn't scrap everything all at once. The issue is not power. Obviously the being President will make Obama the most powerful man in the world. The issue is the abuse of power. Not the use of power. Certain programs should probably be maintained. But they should be reformed from the way they functioned under the Bush years. Of course, all of this is far over our heads. None of us even knows these programs are.
I trust Obama to do the right thing. Unlike Cheney, Obama is on our side.
well, dick,
you're obviously not very "lovable" on this site. wish i could add more. i do, however, have a couple of questions for you. any truth to the rumor that you're behind the recently released story about a highly likely terrorist attack on the u.s. within the next five years? why five? why not four (i'll bet your sneer against a plug nickel that it happens within four)? or seven? or ten? also, along those lines, why has the storyp morphed from highly likely to the attack WILL be either biological or chemical or nuclear? oh wait, i know. of course when it happens, we'll all blame the democrats. they are, after all, in office. then, lo and behold, in four years the american sheople will vote for - and elect - another bush. or a schwarzennegger. or a palin.
really, you might be leaving office, but you're not going very far, right? please tell us you've got nothing to do with this. dick? dick? dick.
p.s. really, the next time your pace maker skips a beat, i hope it's an unbearably long skip. humanity would be the better for it.
'Lovable' like Edi Amin or Adolph Hitler maybe.
Only his mother or an Israeli could 'love' this creature...and I'm not sure about his mother.
In an interview with CBS Radio's Mark Knoller, VP Dick Cheney insisted that incoming President Obama should available himself of the highly questionable power expansions which Bush and Cheney promulgated while occupying the West Wing. According to Cheney’s theory, all presidents supposedly have the power to spy without warrant, to torture, to jail opponents indefinitely without counsel, without trial and even without a charge. He alleged presidents can and should do all that despite what our nation’s governing documents say. In the same interview, Cheney insisted he was a “warm, lovable sort.”
Probably Tomás de Torquemada (1420–1498), prominent leader of the Spanish Inquisition and torture advocate just like Cheney, thought he was “lovable” too. But in making such specious claims, Cheney reminds us yet again that however naive, gullible, lazy, cowardly, weak willed, ineffectual or even corrupt some Democrats might be, Neocon Republicans in comparison are downright scary. It is clear Cheney is antithetical to every principle in our Constitution (with the possible exception of right of militias to bear arms). What is puzzling, other than perhaps to justify his own misconduct, is why he encourages Obama to act the tin horn dictator role too. Would a dictatorship or torturing at the hands of a Democrat be any better for democracy than a Republican one?
In any event, it is my fervent hope that Obama not only loudly rejects Cheney’s usurpations of executive power, but seeks new laws even more expressly prohibiting their use by anyone in government and more transparency to insure it is not done in secret. Better yet, Obama should show that there are consequences for such illegal and reprehensible behavior by senior officials. Indict several of those conscienceless co-conspirators who first authorized such activities, starting with that self described “ warm, lovable” Dick.
Signed: Lawlessone [for more irreverence, see resistence-is-possible.blogspot.com]
Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld should all be placed in a iron cage and shipped all over the world so people have the opportunity to heckle, deride and spit on them. (tough love )
Don't forget throwing shoes. Gotta throw shoes, too.
He might have been lovable to his mother but I have my doubts.
Yeah, let's do more of the same, the last eight years have
been such a success. What an evil asshole.
"For the second time in two years, Vice President Cheney arrived at daybreak at Arnold Palmer Airport in Latrobe. Air traffic was halted briefly at about 7 a.m. as Air Force Two landed and Cheney‛s security detail loaded him and his favourite shotgun into a Humvee and drove up U.S. Route 30 to the exclusive country club...
Scott Wakefield, a dog handler at the club, said about 500 farm-raised pheasants were released from nets for the morning hunt. The 10-man hunting party that included Cheney shot 417 pheasants."
Well, hey, that's what you do for fun in Dec. 2003 after invading a country. Gotta relax, kick back, be loveable.
I don't wish death on Cheney, I'd just like to see him sentenced to washing the wounds of people in Iraqi hospitals for the rest of his life.
I'm sure the guy he shot in the face with a shotgun while intoxicated thnks he's loveable (why do you think it took 12 hours before the authorities were notified--they had to wait for him to sobre up!) But, tough, conservative men don't cry or squeal on others do they? What's a shotgun blast among friends when you love torture and think your'e loveable at the same time? Since it's been proven that not using torture is more effective in information gathering he has the typical Bush-Cheney reponse--ignore the facts, just be an ideologue! Ideologues like them show the following reasoning: "I'm Right because I'm Right, and therfore I conclude that I'm Right!
As "lovable" as only the spawn of Satan can be.
"Tater" Cheney sez: ""If I had advice to give it would be, ... sit down and find out precisely what it is we did and how we did it ..."
***
Propaganda to English translation: "Sit down and swallow the wildly fictional account we offer of what it is we did and how we did it ..."
This sack of toxic waste will never voluntarily reveal 'precisely' what he did and how he did it. It would make Charles Manson look like Mr. Rogers by comparison.
One of Cheney's "tough decisions" was to kill about 3000 folks in the WTC caper that he pulled to be able to invade Afghanistan and Iraq.
I suppose he will advise Obama to pull another 9/11 when Big Guns needs to sell more weapons.
The US should be de-countrified, right along with Israel.
Gringos can pack their bags and get off Turtle Island. A whole new exciting world of discrimination against immigrants will open up to them wherever they try to go.
Justice.
There will be no peace without it.
Ted Hayes
Asked to identify the biggest misimpression people have about him, Cheney laughed and said, tongue-in-cheek: "That I'm actually a warm, lovable sort."
If he is so lovable, why is it I can't stand the man?
He's been chief bogeyman for so long, he just can't give it up. This interview is a set-up for an I-told-you-so in the making (or making up). Remember, he wants everyone to be frightened, intimidated, or distracted. Inventing lies and dispensing fear is his M.O.; war profiteering his game.
Sad to say, after almost forty years spent more or less in proximity to the cold heart of American power, Dick is unlikely to face investigation, trial or conviction unless a foreign power can acquire him and get him to the Hague. It's a fond hope but an unlikely prospect.
"unless a foreign power can acquire him and get him to the Hague."
You never know, on one of his visits to his friends in Saudi Arabia his plane might get diverted to one of them foreign powers. We can always hope.
Rickster
Of course Obama will do to Bush/Cheney what Clinton did to Reagan/Bush. He won't hold them accountable. Besides, Cheney can keep laughing his ribs out now that we've got more of a go-along-get-along with the GOP Congress and a Clinton Version 2.0 in the White House.
Bit of a cheeky fellow
The pathetic schmuck calls himself lovable because no one else could.
Interesting that he also denies his influence and power within that administration. Makes you wonder why he hid himself so much of the time, and why little Georgie spent so much time on the ranch clearing brush. Might do Georgie some good to try manual labor for a while, say, the rest of his life, as long as it's simple stuff like raking and digging ditches.
Isn't it amazing that the media give these assholes such a pass? They ruined the entire world and the media defer to them as if they were the nicest guys on the planet.
Sick shit.
I dreamed last of some guy telling me,they're starting it all over. Before I could ask what,a large rusty Nazi submarine came down the canal and he was on a plank boarding her.To me it was a picture that was worth a thousand words.
Republicans will not consider the possibility that they may be mistaken.
Democrats are so full of self doubt they can't make a decision.
If they fail to reverse Bush and Cheneys'policies, wouldn't that make the Bush legacy not near as bad as what we thought the people in the future would think of them?Damn if you do,damn if..
This man is an ignorant bag of stinking gas. When his lease on life is up, we should declare that day one of great celebration and joy. His passing will mean that one of the darkest souls ever to take human form has moved on, hopefully to a very long stay in that realm where tormented souls gather to weep and moan over their most recent incarnation.
Buried in a tomato juice can my back yard is several hundred dollars which I will expend buying drinks for friends to celebrate the death of Cheesedick Cheney and/or George Wanker Bush, whichever comes first. We're just waiting for the day. You cannot speak ill of the dead if they were dead while supposedly still alive. Bush and Cheney were born dead and have remained incarnations of spiritual and intellectual Death while still walking around.
"well f**k myself and shoot me in the face".
Slow down there cowboy, that's Dick's prerogative.
well f**k myself and shoot me in the face! Dick Cheney really is lovable after all!
There will be no trial of crimes against humanity. The only justice will come is that special place in hell for people like him.
"It would be a tragedy if they threw over those policies simply because they had campaigned against them."
Holy hell, that's messed up. He's essentially saying that American representative politics are a sham. Which comes as no surprise to me, either from the fact of the matter or Cheney's attitude about it, but it's still surprising to hear a politician so blatantly say it.
Indeed. Cheney's first sentence quoted in the interview is the most revealing. Read it again, slowly.
This is nothing but B. S. from the most evil, full of S--- man on earth. Trial for crimes against humanity is waiting.
Kitty Lady
What an ugly, evil man.
I agree with "Judah". It cannot be put more simply "what an ugly evil man".
After all the atrocities at GITMO, the surveillance, the Crimes against Humanity, the WAR, the terror in this country, not showing up to sign the ban on cluster bombs, and on and on and on. Cheney "loveable" that makes me sick!
"There was never any question about who was in charge. It was George Bush. And that's the way we operated. This whole notion that somehow I exceeded my authority here, was usurping his authority, is simply not true. It's an urban legend, never happened."
Is Dick practicing his defence - just in the [unlikely] case he is charged with crimes against humanity?
It's like Edgar Bergen blaming Charlie MCCarthy for using bad language.
Cheney has no future in comedy.
I don't know about that. Have you ever been curious enough to watch the Jerry Springer Show. I think he would fit right in.
Rickster
Why didn't Cheney and Bush keep us secure on 9/11 after Clarke, Clinton, Gore and others told them about the impending attack?
Because they were actively planning the attacks.
Rickster
"I think they need to proceed very cautiously before they begin to change the policies that are in place. They need to know what they're doing." - Cheesedick Cheney
Like you knew what you were doing? No, but you're right; shit is "warm and loveable" . . . if you're a coprophiliac . . . which I suspect you are, among numerous other things too nasty to be mentioned here.
Hungry sharks find him lovely too.
Of course we can't just forget about "terrorism." Especially after these two have created so many terrorists. But we sure don't need the bloated military and we don't need to blow up countries and innocent citizens trying to hit a few terrorists.
Cheney says, "If I had advice to give it would be, before you start to implement your campaign rhetoric you need to sit down and find out precisely what it is we did and how we did it..."
As per your request, bring it on. Sounds like the perfect recipe for indictment.
"...I'm actually a warm, lovable sort." -Dick Waterboard Cheney
COMMENT:
Defending torture at the same time he is calling himself warm and lovable should reveal the man as the sociopathological psychopath he is to even extreme right-wing Republicans, and certainly the Christian right – that is, of course, those that aren't themselves psychopaths.
"and certainly the Christian right"
Their patting him on the back.
Rickster
Say goodbye L'il Dick...goodbye and good riddance.
Ursa
Maybe when the Dicks out of office he can play the penguin in the Next Batman - Dark knight 2. He could at least stay in character
The guy likes to shoot birds released from a cage.
What do you expect, Mr. compassionate thinker?
Hunters usually have something missing upstairs.
Some do a 180 like Tolstoy, but not many I bet.
But canned hunting is especially egregious.
Bill Richardson does it.
Even some so called left writers like Robert Bryce defend it(he was buddies with the ahole lawyer that Cheney shot and unfortunately didnt kill--and they were out on a canned hunt at the time).
BTW
what does a trough have to do with human beings?
A trough is found on a farm(aka animal slave prison).
You dont have them in the wild.
And even domesticated animals are far more civilized than humans.
If its an attempt to insult Cheney-try using the biggest insult of all: human.
He's human all too human.
Webber . . . are you a vegetarian or vegan. I have been vegetarian for over six years and am ni the process of going completely vegan.
It would be cool to know of someone else on this board who is, as well.
Cheers.
"Hunters usually have something missing upstairs."
You don't know any hunters do you. Most hunters are decent everyday people and only shoot what their going to eat.
Rickster
Cheaney isn't a hunter. I've hunted, didn't want to eat what I was going to kill so somehow I kept on missing bambi...
I know hunters, and not one of them would hunt in a cage. None of them would think shooting birds who've just been released from a cage, or shooting animals when they're in a big cage, is hunting.
Dicky is a shooter. He has no respect for any lifeforms.
Hunters respect what they kill, it feeds them through the year and especially thru the winter. A hunter will want his children to have the opportunity to eat what he's eaten, shooters just like shooting at things.
Webber wrote:

COMMENT:
I am unaware of any wild animals that, with a sufficient supply of food in front of them, will go searching afar in packs for their own kind to kill for even more food they don't need.
Therefore, I conclude that even the most wild of wild animals are far more civilized than humans.
Nature has always provided a wonderful respite and powerful healing energy to those humans willing to convene, learn from and connect to ( ALL that IS ).
The further humans stray from NATURE, the further they fall into hubris, dishonesty, hatred, fear, manipulation, and imbalance.
My Word -- and NATURE is even FREE !

The Republican party is in the "trough," his first honest words. A trough being what animals stick their snouts in and feed out of.
Dear Richard,
Yes, I can find love for you. But that love recognizes you with pity as a very sick person. When our repeated behaviors reach such an extent as to cause physical distortion, such as the deformity of your cigar smoking mouth, or is it a pipe?, then, clinically, one has reached the level of psychosis. Please do not take this as a message of hate, but as a call for human recognition - that being, you are a sick person whose position makes you very dangerous to the living world. Please check yourself into the nearest psychiatric ward. You would be doing yourself and the rest of humanity a great service.
Your Friend,
Puck
Cheney really doesn't care if we love him or not. In his mind he is lovable and that is all that matters. The man who molested my husband when he was a youth had exactly the same mindset. And the same twisted mouth (cigars in his case). They are truly sociopaths.
Yes, Cheesedick Cheney speaks out of the left side of his mouth (not the right side) and tends to drop his chin onto his chest. David Addington has mentioned this to him many, many times and The Cheesedick now realizes that if he is to command large, top dog speaking fees on the rubber chicken circuit, he has to stop resembling and sounding like a child molester. He will undergo surgery so he speaks with his whole mouth and will have a version of Tommy John surgery on his neck to keep his head up while he verbalizes. BTW, this will be done at taxpayers' expense.
Hilarious dude!
When are you gonna publish a book of rants?
I recommend a 365 daily calendar...
You want him to lie out of both sides of his mouth???
(sorry obscure canadian joke...)
OK it is Classic Cheney... He still cracks me up!
For all his torture he still hasn't found if Bin Laden is dead or alive or what happened to the trillions lost by the pentagon but Obama should not stop all that good stuff.
Cheney has some serious character disorders. If he wasn't so dangerous, I would feel pity for him.
So "Dick" Cheney isn't troubled by the fact that some people hate him. Sounds like a man with no conscience to me. Sociopaths are not troubled at all by what people think of their murderous ways. Now Cheney is one guy who can look at a mirror, walk away, and truly say "I just looked at a dick."
Dicky reminds me of one of our local nutballs who was caught with the dead body of a prosititute in his truck, same kinda cocky grin.
Cheney is establishing himself as the public spokesperson for American fascism--as loveable as a viper and a congenital liar.
I haven't read this yet but just the title cracks me up!
I hope I am not disappointed.
