President Biden's Remarks on Build Back Better

A viable path forward for climate provisions of broader bill.

WASHINGTON

During President Joe Biden's press conference Wednesday marking his first year in office, he acknowledged the need to break up the proposed Build Back Better package of environmental and social programs to "pass as much as we can now." The president cited the $500 billion of energy and environment provisions as ones where "[i]t's clear we would be able to get support."

The clean energy provisions of Build Back Better enjoy support from the public as well as members of Congress. Polling in competitive U.S. House districts across the country found 70 percent of voters support addressing the challenge of climate change by shifting to greater use of clean energy, reducing carbon pollution from vehicles and industry, and making homes and buildings more energy efficient. The poll also found that 69 percent of voters support investments in clean energy such as wind and solar power by extending tax credits to spur innovation and manufacturing.

Following President Biden's remarks, Environment America's Washington Legislative Office Executive Director Lisa Frank released the following statement:

"The best Build Back Better package is one that can pass. As President Biden said, many members of Congress--and their constituents--support climate and environmental provisions in the package, including tax incentives for wind, solar and other clean energy technologies. We urge Congress to move us toward a brighter future with a bill that supplements the important, popular investments in the already-passed bipartisan infrastructure bill and the other environmental achievements of President Biden's first year in office."
