Obama Won't Ease Restrictions at US-Canada Border
Policy barring Arar also remains the same, U.S. security official says
OTTAWA - Canada-U.S. border slowdowns are mainly a result of aging infrastructure at crossings, not overly restrictive U.S. policy, says a senior American security official.

With a deadline looming that will require passports for entry into the U.S. by land as of June 1, deputy homeland secretary Jane Lute yesterday reinforced a key message: There is little difference between the Democrats' approach and the former Republican leadership when it comes to security on the 49th parallel.
She offered little comfort to Canadian businesses, government and travellers seeking any easing of restrictions. "The border is there, and it's a real border," Lute told reporters at a briefing at the U.S. embassy.
Nor will the Obama administration deviate from the previous Bush administration's position on Maher Arar.
Terry Breese, chargé d'affaires acting as interim ambassador at the embassy, said the policy remains. "Mr. Arar is not welcome in the United States. He's not admissible.
"He was removed from the United States to his native Syria. He returned to Canada."
Breese said a royal commission "made its own decisions" that Arar was erroneously labelled as a terror suspect, "but the United States remains of the view that he's not admissible to the United States."
Because "much of the evidence is classified" it is unlikely the American case against Arar will ever be made public, Breese said.
Lute said she is aware of concerns in Canada that unnecessary regulations are clogging trade and travel at the border, but she repeatedly refused to say whether the Obama administration agrees the concerns are justified.
Obama's second-in-charge of homeland security visited U.S. facilities at the Buffalo-Niagara Falls crossing, and met government officials in Ottawa as Obama and Lute's boss, Janet Napolitano, travelled to the troubled U.S.-Mexico border.
Lute said in Buffalo, which sees its economy integrated with that of southern Ontario, "there are concerns about congestion."
"It's not just related to the rules they have to implement, there is infrastructure challenges that exist. A lot of the infrastructure that we see, and I had an opportunity to view it firsthand, is old infrastructure" that has not kept up with the "evolution of commerce," she said.
But Lute dismissed fears of chaos and confusion at the border when the U.S. brings in the tougher rules.

Show AllThe Michigan penninsula should be given back to Canada and then we really don't care.
N.M.
Years ago, as a boy scout, we went on a canoe trip down St. Francis River which forms the Maine/Quebec and Maine/NB border. No one cared what country we were in. The little Quebecois town we put-in at had homes and and a lumber mill on both sides of the river - not even any signs showing the border. And no one made them speak English if they lived to the south side of the river.
Now, there is a wide ugly clearing with watch towers slashing through the Maine woods just south/west of the river, and ther are reports that there is never any quiet for canoeists along the river as helicopters continuously patrol up and down the river.
Oh well, compared to the Allagash, or the Shavers Fork or Cheat close to home, it wasnt a very pretty river anyway. Too many lakes to paddle down up in those north-woods - ALWAYS against the wind!
Fuck all borders. Obama needs to spend some time driving accross the EU.
And why is Mr. Arar not welcomed in the US? Meet the new Neocons, same as the old Neocons.
BTW I crosses the border from Niagra Falls Canda to Niagra Falls NY in '05. The US customs and immigration were incredibly rude. They played me and my family like God. They can go to hell.
Build a wall around US.
USers should stay in their cage.
Like NYC prison in "Escape from New York."
Just stay in the cage and kill each other.
OH, by all means, seal the northern border. We've got to keep out all those Canadians swarming into the U.S. to do jobs Americans won't do. And besides, if we don't seal that border, TERRORISTS may cross into our country. They might bring in weapons of mass destruction.
EDIT: "Jane Lute yesterday reinforced a key message: There is little difference between the Democrats' approach and the former Republican leadership" FULL STOP
Boycott American products, do not shop in American owned shops, do not travel to America for any reason.
Simple, no?
Excellent idea. We need to do what the ANC did so well to fre their land - ask all foreigners to boycott and divest!
Crossing into the US from Canada is like visiting a prison.
Obama and his Bush advisors are just wrong on this issue (oh I know not all of Obama's advisors, high government folks, and the like are former Bush administration officials who committed all manner of war crimes and violated the Constitution and international law or essentially fans of the Bush style of government, let's call them the Bush friends for short soas not to confuse them with the good people in Obama's administration.)
Obama is perpetuating the lie of the war on terror. He is sending tens of thousands of troops to "fight terrorists" (actually people just trying to get their freedom) but won't be calling it "the war on terror" anymore, just another example of empty window dressing. And the border crossings police state efforts are absurd when any serious terrorist effort could easily get access into the United States regardless of how much of a police state Obama and his Bush friends want to make us.
The fact is only the unholy rotten degenerates in the neocon group and those running the Obama and Bush administrations terrorize people with the weapons of mass destruction that the USA spends a vast percentage of it's wealth building. We have terrorized Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, their lives are hell because of the USA.
How ironic when, in fact, "we the people" of the United States are so truly wonderful and I mean that. We are not represented by our government but controlled by our government.
Both Bush and now Obama commit these terroristic acts without the consent or even concern for the support of the American people. They do it for the ability to steal from our treasury and much less so stealing oil from their oil fields. Obama may be doing it for political posturing so he is no longer called a terrorist? Who knows, regardless good people are dying.
In general what makes us STRONG is that people care about us and most people don't have this way about them that would consider terrorism to be an option. They don't want to do us harm. Thanks in part to the freedom of the Internet they know that a vast number of Americans are as horrified as they are about the acts of our government. Hence they know the USA is not a blackhearted amoral monolith of the dark forces of Hell. They know most Americans are as powerless over their "Democracy" as they are. Even Osama Bin Laden wrote just after 9/11 that he would never target civilians and was horrified by 9/11. The video pretending to be of Osama admitting to and cheering 9/11 was actually not Osama Bin Laden at all it was a fake video, provably so. People are just not psycopathic enough to commit terror acts, this war on terror or now the unspoken Obama war on terror are just there to control us not to protect us.
There would be nothing the USA could do to stop even the concerted effort of a few thousand men from committing acts of terror. They could ruin our lives in multitudes of ways regardless of the police state border or police state homeland security(by the way Hitler's Nazi Germany used "homeland" all the time and the FBI said Homeland security agency is one great fraudulent scam to bilk the treasury).
We need to be good people and stop terrorizing others if we hope not to be ourselves. Love our fellow humankind like we would want to be loved ourselves. Sending drones over international borders to murder people is terror pure and simple. Then if some insane group blows up something or even worse we will have the support of the vast majority of the world as we use normal freedom loving tools of justice to bring them to justice, the fascists call us weak by so doing but really they want to control us not strengthen us.
Vengence is God's not our's.
We shouldn't sit back and let Obama or anyone else terrorize us with police state security measures. As our good friend Benjamin Franklin once said, "Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power."
Let's all hope Barack Obama wakes up tomorrow as himself and ends utterly his impersonation of George Bush. If that happens, change will begin.
As a Canadian who used to enjoy going over to the U.S. to shop and eat in the wonderful restaurants, I will no longer visit your country. The errors inherent in a "no fly" policy and your loss of Habeus Corpus are only two of the reasons. I used to be mildly amused by your obsession with guns and religion; now it just scares the heck out of me. The mistreatment of Mr. Arar by the U.S. and Canadian governments is a disgrace. Your unreasoning fear of anything that hints of a socialism meant to help those less fortunate is beyond comprehension. Like many others, I had hoped Mr. Obama would help to bring about some positive changes...changes that would educate Americans to look out at the world they are a part of. But, he is only a man...a man with strings attached. The real puppeteers will always determine American Policy at home and abroad. Good luck with that. I'll miss the friendly Americans I used to meet, but I won't miss the increasing paranoia.
Well that paranoia has crossed the border. Canada put Harper in power, remember? It was also Canada that has barred British MP Galloway from entering Canada because he dared to criticize Israel.
I wonder how life is in Derby Line/Stanstead these days and other shared border communities.

In 2006 I was traveling to CA. to do some kayaking. I crossed over from Cape Vincent to Wolfe Island. Having crossed the Canadian/US border many times I presented my Passport which I have always use even though it was not required then, but I figured they would look at you better. My car was loaded with 17 ft kayak, bicycle and assorted camping gear. She did the normal routine (Questions: liquor, purpose for visit etc). She took my passport and license and went into her office. After 3 or 4 mins. I figured something was up. She came out and asked if I had been arrested for any crimes in the U.S. or if I was wanted. I told her no and that I have been working for the State Police for 20 years. She ask what I did and I told her I was a Dispatcher. She then asked me to explain what I did. She then went back inside with a confused look on her face. I called my work and had them run my name thru NCIC (national Crime information Center). When she appeared again I told her that my name checked out in NCIC and she asked how I was able to do that. And I told her a phone call and that the Asst. Commander of my installation was given a heads up if I was to be detained. After about 20 mins she gave me my passport and I continued to Kingston, but missed the ferry due to the delay and had to wait 45 mins. When I arrived in Kingston I stopped by the Kingston Police Dept. and had them run my name. Everything was clear. I think maybe my name was flagged with a similar last name or Date of Birth and she had to call Wellsley Island and confirm. Before that and since then I cross over the border and back without any problems.

That should not be difficult to find some news articles about by doing a Web search. I believe that Stanstead has some small news website and there's also The Record or The Sherbrooke Record, and English newspaper of Sherbrooke, Quebec. But owners of where I'm rooming travel to the U.S. yearly, have friends in northern Vt, and when they said they were going to Florida for five weeks during March and early April, I said they'd surely be tied up for a while at the border with all of the increased security and they said, "Oh yes, definitely, ...." I believe the situation has not improved, iow.

About the article, the Obama administration is only (but) [again] proving that it's full of hell-bent BS! There never was any need for increased security at the Canada-U.S. border; [never]. There's never been a real terrorist threat for the U.S. due to the Canada-U.S. border, or if there was an instance, then it was [one].
The whole GWoT is PHONY as HELL! It's all based on mostly LIES, deceit, ... and the U.S. elites' agenda for full spectrum dominance ... globally; in all respects, certainly economically, and certainly with the military serving as the means, the military and geopolitics, that is.
Absolutely no need for increased security of any kind related to trying to counter acts of terrorism in the USA by foreign entrants.
Hear, hear. People are falling for the deceptions. Hence, we end up with a world where all people, in one form or the other, perpetrate the deceptions. If you take this entire "war on terror" super structure apart, peel away the layers of the onion as it were, you'll find it is all built of lies.
If we stop allowing all bribery in politics, put the politician and the briber in prison for a very long time. It is destroying our great nation. This needs to be a Constitutional amendment. It would pass in a month. People are sick of this.
