Today, on the week of Earth Day, Sunrise Movement announced its re-endorsement of Green New Deal Squad members Reps. Jamaal Bowman (NY-16), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), Ilhan Omar (MN-5), Rashida Tlaib (MI-13), Cori Bush (MO-1), and Ayanna Pressley (MA-7).

WASHINGTON

Today, on the week of Earth Day, Sunrise Movement announced its re-endorsement of Green New Deal Squad members Reps. Jamaal Bowman (NY-16), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), Ilhan Omar (MN-5), Rashida Tlaib (MI-13), Cori Bush (MO-1), and Ayanna Pressley (MA-7).

"Sunrise is so proud to endorse our closest allies in Congress who have put it all on the line for our generation," said Varshini Prakash, Executive Director of Sunrise Movement. "While we build a movement of young people for the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and justice for communities everywhere, these members are carrying that movement with them into the halls of Congress, and shifting politics in the process. Each of them has been a consistent champion of bold climate policy in Congress, introducing new legislation to meet the scale of the crises we face and fighting for climate justice at every opportunity. We're excited to keep building towards the Green New Deal with them in 2023 and beyond."

"I love the Sunrise Movement. They are doing transformative work to organize for climate justice and to save our planet," said Rep. Jamaal Bowman, candidate for NY-16. "As a lifelong educator, I know that our kids are our future, but I also know that we as leaders must empower them and give them the platform and space to have their voices heard. I have heard them loud and clear - the thing young people want is for us to make addressing climate change an urgent priority in our country. We are in a critical time right now where addressing the climate emergency is crucial if we truly hope to leave a world behind that is habitable and functioning for our children. I am proud to receive the Sunrise Movement endorsement and look forward to continuing working with them as they fight to make climate justice a priority in DC."

"I'm grateful to have received an endorsement from the Sunrise Movement - this is an endorsement that I do not take for granted. Young people across the country have been at the forefront demanding action on climate justice and continue to push for bold change. For years as a community activist, I fought for the human right to clean and safe drinking water, clean air, and moving our country closer to 100% clean energy. Climate justice is an urgent priority worldwide, and I'm happy to be in partnership with the Sunrise Movement in taking on fighting the fossil fuel industry in Congress and creating a better world for generations to come," said Rep. Rashida Tlaib, candidate for MI-13.

"I'm proud to have once again earned the endorsement of the Sunrise Movement, alongside my friends and colleagues," said Rep. Ayanna Pressley, candidate for MA-7. "Sunrise continues to be at the forefront of the fight to combat climate change through an intersectional lens that reflects the ways in which climate intersects with racial, social, and economic justice. I look forward to continuing to advocate and legislate in Congress for bold policies that will create a safer, more equitable climate future for all of our communities."

Sunrise Movement is working with its hubs in these districts to mobilize and turnout voters. Sunrise is planning a distributed organizing effort for the Squad, and expects to mobilize its volunteer army to contact voters, and make thousands of dials, like they were able to do for Jessica Cisneros in TX-28.

Already this cycle, Sunrise helped power Greg Casar to a win with nearly 60% of the vote in a crowded primary in TX-35 and helped progressive challenger Jessica Cisneros force a runoff against a longtime, well-funded incumbent in TX-28. They have also endorsed Summer Lee (PA-12), Nida Allam (NC-04), Erica Smith (NC-01), and Kina Collins (IL-7) as part of its long term strategy of using progressive energy to build youth organizing infrastructure.

Sunrise Movement is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.
