Oaxaca's Teachers Movement not Thwarted by State Terror

    Shirin Hess
    Jun 27, 2016

On June 19, the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca was the scene of a senseless massacre. The bloody battle took place in the rural town of Nochixtlan and resulted in the death of at least nine civilians. "Right now, the federal police are withdrawing, going back to their vehicles," said a witness of the attack as he filmed the horrific scene. Bullets are heard smashing against metal traffic barriers on the roadside as the camera image shakes. Taking heavy breaths, he calmly continued, "And as they retreat, they are shooting at us with firearms."

A week earlier, police crackdowns had begun in various regions of Oaxaca state. These acts of violence are occurring in light of current protests in Oaxaca, where -- since May 15-- the teachers' movement has set up a peaceful planton, or encampment, in the city center, and dozens of roadblocks across the state, including Nochixtlan. The teachers demanded a dialogue with the local and federal government about a recently approved education overhaul and the implementation of its neoliberal policies in Oaxaca.

The Mexican government's deadly crackdown on a teacher's union protest has rattled the nation in recent days, as 200,000 doctors on Wednesday joined the ongoing national strike against President Enrique Pena Nieto's neoliberal reforms.

Anti-government sentiment is mounting after police forces opened fire on a teacher protest in Oaxaca on Sunday, killing at least eight.

Mexican Police Unleash Deadly Violence Against Protesting Teachers

Nine reportedly killed in Oaxaca, days after thousands of teachers marched in Mexico City to protest neoliberal education reforms

    Lauren McCauley
    Jun 20, 2016

A Mexican teacher protest against neoliberal education policies turned deadly on Sunday, with nine people killed, after police unleashed gunfire on the demonstrators' road blockade.

According to TeleSUR, teachers from the dissident union, Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion (CNTE), "had set up the blockade as part of protests over an education reform implemented by President Enrique Pena Nieto and the arrest of several of the unions' leaders over the past week," which they said, were politically motivated.

Echoing US Teachers, Thousands in Mexico Continue Fight Against School Privatization

A day after President Pena Nieto enacts education reform package, thousands hit streets of Mexico City in weeks-long battle

    Andrea Germanos
    Sep 12, 2013

The momentum of striking teachers in Mexico showed no signs of abating on Wednesday, as 12 thousand teachers retook the streets of Mexico City, continuing their struggle against what they see as education privatization.

The demonstration, during which "anti-riot police fortified the area" around the presidential residence, comes a day after Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto enacted an education reform package that has been met with weeks of protests and encampments in the central square.
