Demand Progress Praises Civil Liberties Board Report
WASHINGTON - David Segal, executive director of Demand Progress, today released the statement below praising a new report by the Privacy and Civil Liberties and Oversight Board (PCLOB) which found NSA bulk surveillance to be illegal. The PCLOB report also found that NSA’s bulk collection of American phone records only provided "minimal" benefits and that the program should be shut down.
Demand Progress is a key architect of The Day We Fight Back, a day of activism dedicated to protesting NSA surveillance.
“Last week the president recognized the real potential for abuse inherent in government surveillance of all Americans without justification. The president suggested superficial reforms, but declared the programs were too important to eliminate. Today, an independent government watchdog created by Congress told us that it is simply not true.
“The Privacy Civil Liberties and Oversight Board report should finally put to rest the 9/11, fear-based argument that we must give up our Constitutional rights in order to be safe. The report found that not only is NSA’s bulk collection of American call records illegal, it isn’t effective. This report should encourage Congress to take up the USA Freedom Act and end illegal bulk surveillance once and for all,” said David Segal.
On The Day We Fight Back, a coalition of activists, organizations and companies will make calls and drive emails to lawmakers. Owners of websites will install banners to encourage their visitors to fight back against surveillance, and employees of technology companies will demand that their organizations do the same. Internet users are being asked to develop memes and change their social media avatars to reflect their demands. Learn more at www.TheDayWeFightBack.org
