Nuclear Propaganda Exposed: The Dirty Truth Behind Government and Industry Claims

The international momentum behind nuclear power reflects a coordinated global effort to promote nuclear as a solution to climate change, despite ongoing concerns about radioactive waste, environmental risks, and the diversion of resources from renewable energy.

    Lynda Williams
    Nov 20, 2024

As a physicist and concerned citizen, I find myself outraged every time I scroll through social media and encounter tweets from the Department of Energy, or DOE, and the Office of Nuclear Energy, or ONE, touting nuclear power as “clean, safe, and carbon-free.”

This narrative not only misrepresents the dirty reality of nuclear power but also obscures the significant environmental and health risks associated with its production and waste. It’s infuriating to see government agencies knowingly lie and promote such misleading information, while ignoring the pressing issues faced by communities affected by the toxic reality of the nuclear power industry—propaganda paid for by U.S. taxpayers!

An underwater photo taken by a remotely operated robot shows damage to support structures inside of one of Fukushima's three melted nuclear reactors

Fears of Fresh Disaster Rise as Images Show Major Damage Inside Fukushima Reactor

The nuclear plant's operator said that damage to the reactor is "spread across large areas."

    Apr 05, 2023

Images released Tuesday by the operator of Japan's destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant showed significant damage on the inside of one of the facility's three melted reactors, heightening fears that another earthquake in the region could spark a fresh radioactive catastrophe.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) sent an underwater remotely operated vehicle into the damaged reactor's "Unit 1 pedestal, a supporting structure right under the core."

Hot Mess: States Struggle to Deal with Radioactive Fracking Waste

Potentially dangerous drilling byproducts are being dumped in landfills throughout the Marcellus Shale with few controls

Jie Jenny Zou, Center For Public Integrity
    Jun 20, 2016

This story was produced in collaboration with the Ohio Valley ReSource, a public media partnership covering Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia.

The Marcellus Shale has transformed the Appalachian Basin into an energy juggernaut. Even amid a recent drilling slowdown, regional daily production averages enough natural gas to power more than 200,000 U.S. homes for a year.

Nuclear Waste Site Whistleblower 'Vindicated' With $4.1 Million Settlement

Walter Tamosaitis a 'hero' who helped stave off disaster, says Tom Carpenter of Hanford Challenge

    Andrea Germanos
    Aug 14, 2015

After years of legal wrangling, his lawyer announced Wednesday that a whistleblower who raised safety concerns about operations at the Hanford nuclear waste site in Washington had won a $4.1 million settlement.

Walter Tamosaitis, an engineer, worked over four decades for Hanford subcontractor URS (now AECOM), a subcontractor to Bechtel. Tamosaitis, the LA Times explains,
