"Everything in H.R. 1 Is a No-Brainer for Anyone Who Actually Cares About American Democracy."

"Our political leaders have been most responsive to the interests of their wealthy donors for too long while the needs of normal Americans go unadressed."

WASHINGTON

Today, in response to the new House Democratic Majority taking up a comprehensive democracy reform package as their first bill of the new Congress, the Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires Morris Pearl released the following statement on H.R. 1:

"It's time to unrig our broken political system. Our political leaders have been most responsive to the interests of their wealthy donors for too long while the needs of normal Americans go unadressed. Before we can fix any of our other issues we need to put power back into the hands of the people, and H.R. 1 is an important, necessary first step to getting there. It not only works to remove dark money from our political system to ensure every American has the same political power as millionaires like me, it also strengthens our democracy by making it easier to vote, limiting gerrymandering, and cracking down on corruption.

Everything in H.R. 1 is a no-brainer for anyone who actually cares about American democracy. These are all obvious solutions to the problems plaguing our country, but they're likely to be opposed tooth and nail by Republicans in Congress and the White House who see returning power to the American people as detrimental to their political ambitions. It's a sad state of affairs when an entire American political party gives up on trying to promote policies that the American people actually want, and instead decides that their best option is to make America less democratic."

The Patriotic Millionaires is a group of high-net worth Americans who share a profound concern about the destabilizing level of inequality in America. Our work centers on the two things that matter most in a capitalist democracy: power and money. Our goal is to ensure that the country's political economy is structured to meet the needs of regular Americans, rather than just millionaires. We focus on three "first" principles: a highly progressive tax system, a livable minimum wage, and equal political representation for all citizens.
