SAN FRANCISCO, CA

A group of women, including Captain Planet and the Center for Biological Diversity's Frostpaw the Polar Bear, will rally outside the "Ultimate Women's Power Luncheon" on Oct. 20 to urge former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to oppose the Keystone XL pipeline and other fossil fuel projects that will worsen the climate crisis.

The rally will be outside the Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Francisco, where Clinton is attending a fundraiser.

Clinton, widely expected to be a presidential contender in 2016, has yet to take a public position on Keystone XL or articulate specific climate policies should she be elected president. The activists at the rally hope to deliver a letter to Clinton, signed by more than 30 environmental organizations representing millions of Americans, urging her to speak out against Keystone XL.

"The decisions we make in the next few years will have a profound impact on the lives of generations to come," said Valerie Love with the Center for Biological Diversity. "We need Hillary Clinton to use her power for good and stand with us against Keystone XL and for clean energy solutions and a safe, livable climate."

Background
Five months ago the leaders of 30 conservation groups from around the country signed a letter urging former Secretary Clinton to break her silence and speak out against the dangerous Keystone XL pipeline. Despite the fact that the letter attracted headlines in national news sources including the Wall Street Journal and Politico, Clinton has yet to take a position.

The 1,700-mile, Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL pipeline would cross the heart of the Midwest and deliver oil to the Gulf of Mexico, where much of it would be exported to other countries. Along the way the pipeline would cut through rivers, streams and prime wildlife habitat for at least 20 imperiled species, including whooping cranes and pallid sturgeon, putting them at risk.

At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.
