Greenpeace Calls on other Pacific Coast Elected Officials to Follow Inslee's Example

Greenpeace USA responded to statements by Washington Governor Jay Inslee today in which he expressed opposition to Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion because it would increase tar sands tanker traffic by as much as 700 percent off the Pacific Coast. The noise from tankers alone, as well as the higher risk of oil spills these tankers represent, would significantly threaten the lives of the Southern Resident Killer Whale, an endangered species, and the local salmon population which is the orca's primary food source. Greenpeace Field Organizing Manager Ben Smith said:

"Greenpeace applauds Governor Inslee's opposition to Kinder Morgan's proposed Trans Mountain pipeline and the threats it poses. Completion of this project would significantly increase tar sands tanker traffic and risk oil spills in Washington state waters and off the Pacific Coast. This would further jeopardize the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale, which represents a significant part of Washington's history, culture, and tourism industry. Oil pipelines also poison our drinking water while worsening the effects of global warming, which puts the health and lives of our citizens and marine life at risk.

"For our coasts, communities, and climate, Governor Inslee must continue to do everything in his power to ensure Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion is never built. Greenpeace also calls for other public officials in Washington, Oregon, and California to do the same."

Today's statement comes on the heels of Governor Inslee issuing an executive order meant to protect the Southern Resident Killer Whale.

Today's statement also comes on the heels of protests to the Trans Mountain pipeline that featured more than 10,000 Indigenous people and their allies. Protests in British Columbia will continue next week.
