Civil and Human Rights Coalition Condemns Trump Administration's Immoral Decision to End Temporary Protected Status For Haitians

WASHINGTON

Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Trump administration announced that it will end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants:

"Eliminating Temporary Protected Status for Haitians is another example of the cruel indifference of the Trump administration and its continued efforts to abandon our country's history as a nation of immigrants. America opened its hearts and doors to 50,000 of our Caribbean neighbors who fled Haiti's complete devastation after the 2010 earthquake. The country is still struggling to recover from the earthquake and is in no position to receive these individuals who are already making enormous contributions to our country. Congress must lead where the president has failed and find a permanent solution for Haitians, and other TPS holders, living in our country that allows them to continue contributing to the fabric of our democracy."

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the civil and human rights of all persons in the United States. Through advocacy and outreach to targeted constituencies, The Leadership Conference works toward the goal of a more open and just society - an America as good as its ideals.
