US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack speaks with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.

Trump Envoy Tom Barrack in Hot Seat for Admitting Israeli Occupation of Golan Heights

Barrack's comments—since retracted amid Republican calls for his resignation—directly contradicted the president's recognition of Israel's illegal occupation of Syrian territory conquered in 1967.

Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Türkiye and special presidential envoy for Syria and Iraq, on Sunday retracted his acknowledgment of Israel's illegal occupation of Syria's Golan Heights amid mounting Republican calls for his resignation.

Directly contradicting Trump's formal recognition of Israel's unlawful 1981 annexation of the Golan Heights, Barrack said during a Friday interview with podcaster Mario Nawfal that Israel would face difficulties if it moved to unlawfully annex parts of southern Lebanon it invaded and currently occupies.

Nearly 100 Groups Urge Congress to Reject GOP-Led Attacks on Clean Air Protections

If lawmakers pass four Congressional Review Act resolutions, the coalition warns, "families will experience consequences," from further strained household budgets to breathing toxic air.

Dozens of organizations focused on consumer advocacy, the environment, health, science, and more came together on Monday for a letter urging the Republican-controlled US Congress to vote down four resolutions attacking clean air protections.

Signed by 95 groups, including the Center for Biological Diversity, Earthjustice Action, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Progressives for Democracy in America, Public Citizen, and Sierra Club, the letter takes aim at four resolutions recently introduced by Republicans under the Congressional Review Act (CRA).

Trump Raked In Up to $15.5 Million From Fossil Fuel Stocks as His War Pushed Up Gas Prices

"President Trump continues to get richer from an illegal war that he started and refuses to resolve, while Americans pay the price for his actions," said US Sen. Maggie Hassan.

    Brad Reed
    Aug 24, 2026

A report released Monday by Democrats on the US Congressional Joint Economic Committee estimates that President Donald Trump has made millions of dollars from his own illegal war with Iran.

According to the report, Trump's wealth has increased by as much as $15.5 million since January thanks to his investments in oil and gas stocks, which have surged since the president unlawfully attacked Iran without congressional approval earlier this year.

Washington Post Ordered to Rehire Columnist Who Was Fired for Charlie Kirk Comments

"This is a landmark win for every journalist who refuses to be silenced."

    Julia Conley
    Aug 24, 2026

A group dedicated to defending the rule of law from authoritarianism and corruption said it had succeeded in its "monumental defense of the First Amendment" on Monday after an independent arbitrator ruled that The Washington Post had wrongfully fired columnist Karen Attiah last September over social media posts she wrote about assassinated right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, and ordered the newspaper to rehire Attiah.

"The ruling marks a landmark moment for press freedom, confirming that corporate media institutions cannot use retaliatory discipline to silence journalists who address uncomfortable truths," said Democracy Defenders Fund, which signed on to represent Attiah, along with the W ashington-Baltimore News Guild, when she filed a grievance against the Post arguing she had been wrongfully terminated.

'Lawless Killing Spree at Sea Resumes' as US Announces Fresh Boat Bombings

With the latest two casualties, the Trump administration's boat bombing spree has now claimed the lives of at least 223 people.

    Brad Reed
    Aug 24, 2026

The US military has resumed its campaign of bombing alleged drug-trafficking vessels after a two-month pause in a campaign that many legal experts and human rights groups believe constitutes a murder spree.

In a Monday social media post, US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) said it carried out a "lethal kinetic strike on a low-profile vessel operating along established narco-trafficking routes" in the Pacific Ocean on Sunday. Two people were killed as a result of the attack, SOUTHCOM claimed.

'Settle It': Trump Personally Intervened to Force DOJ Deal With Reviled Concert Ticket Monopoly

"The president stopped by to check on the negotiations. How is this not settled yet? asked Trump," The Wall Street Journal reported. "By the end of the meeting, it was."

    Jake Johnson
    Aug 24, 2026

Reporting published over the weekend revealed that US President Donald Trump personally intervened to force a Justice Department settlement with Ticketmaster owner Live Nation, which faced a high-profile antitrust trial for abusing its market power and illegally crushing competition.

The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that the Justice Department, which sued Live Nation in 2024 during former President Joe Biden's administration, was "preparing to wage a legal battle more than a decade in the making against the world’s largest concert promoter. Then President Trump called." A senior DOJ official relayed to associates that the president told them to "settle it."

Iranian Officials Scoff at US Treasury Secretary's Threat of 'Economic D-Day'

"Is this a victory or an admission of America's failure!?" asked Iran's deputy foreign minister.

    Jake Johnson
    Aug 24, 2026

Top Iranian officials on Monday ridiculed the Trump administration's threats of total economic warfare against the Middle East country, calling the US Treasury Department's proposed "financial offensive" an act of desperation as the costly conflict drags on with no end in sight.

"Is this a victory or an admission of America's failure!?" Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's deputy foreign minister, wrote on social media after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent laid out the Trump administration's planned economic assault in a Sunday op-ed for the Financial Times titled, "An Economic D-Day Is Coming for Iran."

    House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries

'Pathetic Stuff': Jeffries Rebuked Over Secret Meeting With Kushner

The only valid reason for such a meeting, said one critic, would be for the House Minority Leader to tell the president's son-in-law that he’ll be subpoenaed by "for a corruption investigation on day one of Democratic control of the House."

    Jon Queally
    Aug 23, 2026

Persistent calls among progressive critics and Democratic voters that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer should step aside from their leadership roles ticked up again on Sunday after it was reported that Jeffries met secretly in recent weeks with Jared Kushner, the far-right son-in-law of President Donald Trump, who has also served as a top White House advisor and envoy.

The New York Times reported Sunday that the two men "met privately in recent weeks" in order to discuss "potential areas of common ground" if the Democrats regain control of one or both chambers of Congress in the midterms.

'Appalling and Fundamentally Dishonest': Ruffalo Rejects Antisemitism Charges by Paramount Amid Merger Warning

"Now is the time to dive boldly into all these issues," said the Avengers actor and social justice activist, "not step back or concede."

    Jon Queally
    Aug 23, 2026

Mark Ruffalo, the actor known worldwide for both his role as the Incredible Hulk in the Avengers movie franchise as well as his work as a dedicated humanitarian and voice for social justice, did not back down Saturday after his criticism of the pending merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. was cast as antisemitic by executives at Paramount, largely owned by billionaire Larry Ellison and run by his son, David.

While Ruffalo has been outspoken in his opposition to the Paramount-Warner Bros. deal for months—warning like many other critics that further consolidation by such media behemoths will hurt consumers, squeeze workers in the entertainment industry, minimize the range of viewpoints and creativity available, and further entrench right-wing control of the nation's media system—what apparently sparked the accusation against him was the recent sharing of a years-old video clip of Paramount board member Safra Catz discussing “really profoundly scary technologies” that Oracle, which offers software and database services and the company upon which Larry Ellison built his vast wealth, provided to the Israeli military over recent years.

'Palestine Is Being Erased Before Our Eyes': 100 Former French, British Diplomats Say End Weapons Sales, Trade With Israel

The abuses by the Israeli government and military are "a stain on the conscience of humanity, requiring the UK and France to act."

    Jon Queally
    Aug 23, 2026

While critics of the French and British governments say they are doing too little to confront the crimes and human rights violations of Israel against the Palestinian people, about 100 former diplomats of the two nations penned an open letter published over the weekend agreeing that much stronger actions must be taken to end the atrocities taking place in both the Gaza Strip and the Occupied West Bank.

Published in Le Monde on Saturday, the joint op-ed by the former UK and French ambassadors and foreign diplomats argues that because their two nations "played a decisive role in the shaping of the Middle East," it is incumbent upon them to "make common cause over the region's fundamental faultline: equal rights for Israelis and Palestinians"—a dynamic grossly lacking as Palestinians are starved and bombed in Gaza, with their rights endlessly under assault in the West Bank.

'Tremendous Victory for the Rule of Law': Trump-Rubio 75-Nation Visa Ban Struck Down

"At its heart," said one of the legal challengers to the rule imposed by the State Department, "this case is about keeping families together."

    Jon Queally
    Aug 22, 2026

A federal judge in New York has ruled that President Donald Trump and the US State Department overstepped their authority when they suspended the processing of visa applications for people from 75 nations earlier this year, a move that critics at the time called a "travesty," cruel, and counter to the rule of law.

US District Judge Jeannette Vargas, a Biden appointee, ruled Friday that the pause in visa applications—which Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed was necessary to prevent immigrant visitors from freeloading on US taxpayer dollars—was “contrary to law and in excess of statutory authority.”
