Student Loan Moratorium Extension Is a 'Welcome Reprieve' for Working People

AFSCME President Lee Saunders issued this statement praising the Biden administration for extending the federal student loan payment pause until May 1, 2022.

WASHINGTON

AFSCME President Lee Saunders issued this statement praising the Biden administration for extending the federal student loan payment pause until May 1, 2022.

"As this pandemic continues to exact a brutal toll on our communities and the economy, this is a welcome reprieve for hard-working Americans who are saddled with student debt. Public service workers remain on the front lines, doing the necessary work to keep our communities going. This extension, along with the Biden administration's existing efforts to forgive millions in loans through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, will go a long way in giving public service workers the cushion they need to continue their essential work. On behalf of AFSCME's 1.4 million members, I want to thank President Joe Biden for his compassionate leadership."

AFSCME members provide the vital services that make America happen. With members in hundreds of different occupations, AFSCME advocates for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services and prosperity and opportunity for all working families.
