Sierra Club Demands Immediate Investigation of Puerto Rico Energy Contract and Any Cabinet Ties

San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Sierra Club is demanding an immediate demand for Congress to investigate the circumstances surrounding the awarding of a three hundred million dollar electric reconstruction contract to a small Montana firm of two employees, Whitefish Energy, from the hometown of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. The Sierra Club's demand joins calls from Members of Congress, and comes on the heels of a demand from the Mayor of San Juan that the contract be canceled.

STATEMENT FROM SIERRA CLUB NATIONAL BOARD MEMBER RAMON CRUZ OF PUERTO RICO, A FORMER COMMISSIONER OF THE PUERTO RICO ENERGY COMMISSION AND A FORMER VICE PRESIDENT OF THE PUERTO RICO ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY BOARD.

"If this is what it looks like, Zinke and the Trump Administration are using the devastation in Puerto Rico, where people are actually still losing electricity a full month after the disaster, to help their friends profit. Congress needs to step in and investigate this shady deal immediately."

The Sierra Club is the most enduring and influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. We amplify the power of our 3.8 million members and supporters to defend everyone's right to a healthy world.
