WASHINGTON

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued the following statement in response to reports that an extreme anti-choice organization is set to unveil a series of offensive billboards in Chicago that include President Barack Obama's image. The group's Chicago campaign comes less than one month after its billboard in New York City, which read, "The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb," was taken down after area residents and the woman whose daughter's image was used in the billboard voiced their outrage.

"We believe all individuals have the right to make personal, private decisions regarding their reproductive lives. No woman's reproductive choices should be questioned or subjected to more scrutiny or control based on her racial or ethnic background--and that's exactly what these billboards do. We also find it deeply offensive that the group behind these billboards is wrapping its anti-choice agenda in the language and framework of civil rights. This cynical campaign represents politics at its worst, and will not succeed in Illinois or anywhere else these billboards appear."

NARAL Pro-Choice America fights for reproductive freedom for every body. Each day, we organize and mobilize to protect that freedom by fighting for access to abortion care, birth control, aid parental leave, and protections from pregnancy discrimination.
