WASHINGTON

The Center for Biological Diversity issued the following statement today from Executive Director Kieran Suckling in response to Senator Lisa Murkowski's introduction of a "disapproval resolution" aimed at blocking the Environmental Protection Agency from reducing greenhouse gas pollution under the Clean Air Act.

"A vote for the Murkowski resolution is a vote to gut the Clean Air Act and do nothing about global warming."

"With the Copenhagen talks failing to produce a legally binding, science based agreement, and the planet warming faster than predicted, we need the Clean Air Act more than ever. The Senate should resoundingly reject Murkowski's resolution to block the Environmental Protection Agency from doing its job of reducing greenhouse pollution through the Clean Air Act, our strongest and most successful law for protecting the air we breathe and a safe climate."

At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.
