WASHINGTON

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a moral leader in South Africa's anti-apartheid movement, passed away at 90. A powerful voice for nonviolence and peaceful reconciliation after the fall of apartheid South Africa, Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. The following is a statement from Damon Hewitt, president and executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law:

"Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a determined, compassionate, and unyielding advocate for freedom, using his moral leadership to help put an end to apartheid in South Africa and working tirelessly for reconciliation. He understood that our humanity depended on each other and that only by confronting evil and working together to overcome it could we achieve a justice world."

The Lawyers' Committee is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to enlist the private bar's leadership and resources in combating racial discrimination and the resulting inequality of opportunity - work that continues to be vital today.
