'Normal' is killing us.

Donald Trump is out of the White House. COVID-19 is fading, at least in wealthier nations. The world, they say, is returning to “normal.” That’s the narrative that the corporate media is selling. But there’s a problem: “normal” is destroying our planet, threatening our democracies, concentrating massive wealth in a tiny elite, and leaving billions of people without access to life-saving vaccines amid a deadly pandemic. Here at Common Dreams, we refuse to accept any of this as “normal.” Common Dreams just launched our Mid-Year Campaign to make sure we have the funding we need to keep the progressive, independent journalism of Common Dreams alive. Sunrise Movement Statement on Senator Manchin’s Indecision on Rep. Deb Haaland

WASHINGTON -

In response to Senator Joe Manchin’s statement that he is undecided on Rep. Deb Haaland’s nomination for Secretary of the Interior, Sunrise Movement’s Political Director Evan Weber, released the following statement:

“Despite Senator Machin’s statement of indecision on Rep. Deb Haaland’s confirmation, we expect a swift turnaround from Machin on her confirmation hearing. We understand it is a sound practice to question pending nominees, but Senator Manchin had no problem voting for Jeff Sessions, Rex Tillerson, Brett Kavanaugh, and others, who have been outwardly racist, sexist, unqualified, and have invoked harmful policies. So why would he be undecided on Rep. Haaland, who is not only uniquely qualified for this role, but would make history as the first Native American Cabinet Secretary?

“There is a clear groundswell of support behind Congresswoman Haaland and her confirmation would help realize sovereignty to native people while invoking the change we need to meet the urgency and scale of the climate crisis. We challenge Senator Manchin to be brave, stand up to the fossil fuel industry and do what’s right by moving Rep. Haaland’s nomination to the Senate floor for a vote.”
