Legislation Would Reduce Energy Use, Stimulate Economy

Bipartisan effort to increase energy efficiency technologies

WASHINGTON

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is holding hearings today on bipartisan legislation that aims to spur the economy while reducing our energy consumption. The Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act of 2011 (S. 1000) would advance the energy efficiency of buildings and appliances and give manufacturers and the federal government guidelines to hasten efficiency upgrades. Sponsored by Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) the bill would promote jobs and help increase the use of energy efficient technologies in the home, commercial and industrial sectors of our economy.

The following statement is from Tim Ballo, Earthjustice attorney:

"This bill clearly gives the Department of Energy the directive to lead us toward an energy efficient future free from our current dependence on dirty and aged fossil fuel technologies. Energy efficient standards for refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, air conditioners and furnaces will save consumers billions while reducing global warming pollution.

"Senators Shaheen and Portman realize that energy efficiency is a top priority for our country. It's our best path toward energy independence, a cleaner energy future, and a stronger economy."
