Earlier this morning, the U.S. government executed Lisa Montgomery, the first woman to be federally executed in 67 years. The decades of trauma resulted in documented brain damage and severe mental illness.

WASHINGTON

Earlier this morning, the U.S. government executed Lisa Montgomery, the first woman to be federally executed in 67 years. Like many women sentenced to extreme sentences, Lisa Montgomery suffered from a lifetime of physical, mental and sexual abuse. The decades of trauma resulted in documented brain damage and severe mental illness.

Amy Fettig, Executive Director of The Sentencing Project, released the following statement:

"Despite a global pandemic which has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, the Trump Administration continues to prioritize executing Americans in its final days. This is a failure of justice and humanity.

The death penalty does not make us safer and further corrupts our criminal legal system. President-Elect Joe Biden must end this inhumane practice and commute all death sentences on Day 1 of his Administration."

The Sentencing Project is a leader in changing the way Americans think about crime and punishment. The Sentencing Project promotes effective and humane responses to crime that minimize imprisonment and criminalization of youth and adults by promoting racial, ethnic, economic, and gender justice.
