Common Cause Salutes America's Journey for Justice As It Arrives In Washington

Interfaith Service, Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill Set for Wednesday

WASHINGTON

America's Journey for Justice, the 1,000-mile march from Selma, AL. to Washington, DC, arrives in the nation's capital this afternoon as participants cross the Arlington Memorial Bridge and reach the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Led by NAACP President Cornell William Brooks, marchers and supporters including Common Cause President Miles Rapoport and Common Cause activists from the Washington area and North Carolina will mass at the Virginia end of the bridge at 12:15 p.m. The group is scheduled to begin crossing the Potomac River at 1:30 p.m..

At 2:30 p.m., Brooks, Rapoport, and the leaders of several other organizations that have taken part in the journey will speak at a press conference at the Lincoln Memorial. (see attached list). Also in attendance will be marchers who completed the entire journey, which began Aug. 1 in Selma.

An interfaith service and legislative teach-in will be held at 7 p.m. at the Washington Hebrew Congregation, 3935 Macomb St. NW, in Washington, DC. Rabbi Bruce Lustig, who serves this congregation, marched in several stages of America's Journey for Justice starting in Selma, along with nearly 150 rabbis from around the country who carried the torah from Selma to Washington.

America's Journey for Justice culminates on Wednesday with an Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill. A rally and press conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. at Upper Senate Park, 200 New Jersey Avenue, NW..

After that, members of the NAACP and supporting organizations, along with marchers and supporters, will be visiting members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate to deliver the message of the journey: "Our lives, our votes, our jobs, and our schools matter."
