Let's Join Japan and Junk New Nukes
Japan will build no new nuclear reactors. It's a huge body blow to the global industry, and could mark a major turning point in the future of energy. Says Prime Minister Naoto Kan: "We need to start from scratch… and do more to promote renewables." Wind power alone could--and now probably will--replace 40 nukes in Japan.

"Safe" Radiation is a Lethal Three Mile Island Lie
There is no safe dose of radiation. We do not x-ray pregnant women. Any detectable fallout can kill. With erratic radiation spikes, major air and water emissions and at least three reactors and waste pools in serious danger at Fukushima, we must prepare for the worst. When you hear the terms "safe" and "insignificant" in reference to radioactive fallout, ask yourself: "Safe for whom?" "Insignificant to which of us?"

An 8.9 Quake Could Have Irradiated the Entire US
Had the massive 8.9 Richter-scale earthquake that has just savaged Japan hit off the California coast, it could have ripped apart at least four coastal reactors and sent a lethal cloud of radiation across the entire United States . The two huge reactors each at San Onofre and Diablo Canyon are not designed to withstand such powerful shocks. All four are extremely close to major faults.

Fighting the 5 Fascisms in Wisconsin and Ohio
The escalating confrontations in Wisconsin and Ohio are ultimately about preventing the United States from becoming a full-on fascist state. The stakes could not be higher---or more clear. As defined by its inventor, Benito Mussolini, fascism is "corporate control of the state." There are ways to beat around the Bush---Paul Krugman has recently written about "oligarchy"---but it's time to end all illusions and call what we now confront by its true name.

Big Nuke Billions Lurk in Obama's Budget
Barack Obama's 2012 budget marks a major escalation in the nuclear war against a green-powered future, whose advocates are already fighting back. Amidst massive budget cuts for social and environmental programs, Obama wants $36 billion in loan guarantees for a reactor industry that cannot secure sufficient private "marketplace" financing for new construction.

Obama and Our Disney Nukes
Barack Obama is about to address a nation whose greatest potential liability is its Disneyesque illusion of atomic power. Despite the nation's huge debts and fears of foreign terror, America's 104 licensed reactors are the most dangerous threat to our future. After a half-century of operations, the industry still cannot get more than $11 billion in private insurance against possible accidents whose human and property damage could easily run from mere trillions to the simply incalculable.

The Second Amendment Demands Gun Control
The Second Amendment supports those of us who would CONTROL guns---and thus prevent the insane slaughter that compromises our security. James Madison and the Founders of this nation would be enraged to see the Second Amendment being used to put guns in the hands of the Tucson shooter and so many others like him. The debate over the violent hatespeak of Sarah "Lock & Load" Palin and her Foxist ilk is long overdue. But so is a careful national reawakening to what the Second Amendment actually says:

Another Astonishing Holiday No New Nukes Victory
The atomic energy industry has suffered another astonishing defeat. Because of it, 2010 again left the "nuclear renaissance" in the Dark Age that defines the technology. But an Armageddon-style battle looms when Congress returns next year. The push to build new nuclear plants depends now, as always, on federal subsidies. Fifty-three years after the first commercial reactor opened at Shippingport, Pennsylvania, no private funders will step forward to pay for a "new generation" of nukes.

Our Gay Commander-in-Chief
As "conservatives" scream and yell about gays in the military, they might remember that in all likelihood we have already had a gay Commander-in-Chief. His name was James Buchanan. He was the 15th President of the United States. A Democrat from Pennsylvania, Buchanan is discreetly referred to in official texts as "our only bachelor president." In fact, many historians believe that he may well have been "married" to William Rufus King, a pro-slavery Democrat from Alabama who was our only bachelor Vice President.

The War in Afghanistan is Not about Afghanistan
The war in Afghanistan is about perpetual war, not Afghanistan. It's about preventing democracy in the United States, not bringing it to Southwest Asia. And it is the tombstone of the Obama Presidency.
