New Poll: Democrats, Young Voters Support Transgender Childrens' Rights While Most Republicans Hold Transphobic Views

WASHINGTON

Today, Texas Governor Abbot directed Family and Protective Services to investigate doctors, nurses, teachers, and parents who help children pursue gender-affirming care and charge them with child abuse. New national polling released today by Data for Progress finds the powerful resilience of transphobia amongst many American voters -- and that younger voters are leading a cultural shift towards a more inclusive political culture.

Democrats by a +34-point margin and young voters by a +22-point margin believe that legislation that would prevent transgender children from pursuing medical transition and participating in sports is unfair and discriminatory towards transgender children.

The poll also finds that opinions on transgender rights are highly partisan -- with 71% of Democrats agreeing that "increased visibility and rights of transgender individuals have made society better," as opposed to just 19% of Republicans.

71% of Democrats and 51% of Independents also agree "the government should protect the rights of transgender Americans, even if it means changing traditional family structures and social norms," as opposed to 20% of Republicans. Voters who say they personally know a transgender person are more likely to support transgender rights by wide margins.
