'Normal' is killing us.

But there’s a problem: “normal” is destroying our planet, threatening our democracies, concentrating massive wealth in a tiny elite, and leaving billions of people without access to life-saving vaccines amid a deadly pandemic. There was nothing comforting, and plenty that was frightening, when President Donald Trump on Friday publicly announced that Puerto Rico—suffering a humanitarian disaster of unprecedented proportions—was, in fact, an island surrounded by the ocean.

"This is an island," Trump said. "Surrounded by water. Big water, ocean water."
