Beyond Nuclear today decried the reckless decision-making by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on March 21 to grant a 20-year license extension to the Vermont Yankee reactor, the same Mark I design as the severely damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors still in an extremely dangerous state in Japan. But imagine the chaos of evacuating the entire region if a catastrophic radioactivity release were to occur at the aged and degraded Davis-Besse nuclear power plant on the Lake Erie shore east of Toledo. Unthinkable as it is, evacuation preparedness -- as well as post-accident cleanup lines of authority and funding sources -- are sorely lacking at best, or entirely non-existent.

A broad coalition of groups in both the U.S. and Canada took full advantage of an opportunity provided by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to voice continued opposition to the shipment of radioactive steam generators on the Great Lakes. The radioactive waste shipment from Bruce Nuclear Power Plant near Owen Sound, Ontario to Studsvik in Sweden – for so-called “recycling” into consumer products -- has generated a groundswell of public opposition on both sides of the border in the Great Lakes region, as well as overseas.

Beyond Nuclear Denounces President Obama’s Decision to Transfer Financial and Safety Risks of New Reactors to US Taxpayers
Beyond Nuclear today denounced President Obama’s granting of a conditional loan guarantee to Southern Nuclear Operating Company for the construction of new atomic reactors at its Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant site in Waynesboro, Georgia. Two new Westinghouse-Toshiba Advanced Passive (AP) 1000 reactors are proposed at Plant Vogtle. President Obama’s award comes despite an announcement by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in October of a major safety flaw with the AP1000 design.

Indigenous Leaders Call for End to Discriminatory and Deadly Uranium Mining
A group of activist leaders from indigenous communities, including Native American, Australian Aboriginal and Touareg from Niger - spoke out in Washington, DC today against the disproportionate discrimination against Native peoples caused by uranium mining. The group also included a prominent French nuclear scientist and the actor, James Cromwell. They called for an end to uranium mining and the nuclear power programs uranium fuels.
