Iran Expert on the Announcement of US Troop Withdrawals from Syria

WASHINGTON

According to new reports, the United States is planning a "full" and "rapid" withdrawal of US troops from Syria. In reaction to the news, Jamal Abdi, President of the National Iranian American Council, issued the following statement:

"Keeping U.S. troops inside Syria laid the groundwork for a regional war against Iran that would have been catastrophic for U.S. and regional security, and fundamentally at odds with presidential war powers under the U.S. constitution. While it remains to be seen what drove this decision from President Trump, withdrawing U.S. troops from Syria is a rebuke of those seeking to maneuver the U.S. into a direct military confrontation with Iran.

"The Middle East today has a diplomacy deficit, not a war deficit. NIAC hopes that the administration will follow on its decision to withdraw troops by engaging in serious diplomacy with all parties that have a stake in the future of Syria, in addition to reversing its unjust ban on refugees from the war-ravaged country. Neither the terrorism threat nor destructive regional rivalries can be resolved through military means, but only when all major regional stakeholders unite for diplomatic solutions."
