New Big Oil Revelations Demand Continued Investigations: Center for Climate Integrity

The House Oversight Committee Released New Industry Documents Showing that Big Oil Companies Keep Lying About their Role in the Climate Crisis

WASHINGTON

Big Oil companies are still fueling the climate crisis while lying about their commitments to solutions, according to reports from NBC, CNN, and the Washington Post about new documents being released today as part of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform's investigation into the oil and gas industry's climate deception.

Rep. Ro Khanna told NBC that the industry documents obtained by the committee "will be handed over to those with more resources who can act on the information."

Richard Wiles, president of the Center for Climate Integrity, released the following statement:

"The committee's investigation has made clear that Big Oil companies are still lying about their role in the climate crisis and can never be trusted as serious partners in solutions. The work to expose these polluters and hold them accountable must and will continue, in Congress, courts, and beyond.

"Established evidence of Big Oil's deception has led dozens of states and municipalities to take these polluters to court. Thanks to Chairs Maloney and Khanna, the Oversight Committee has spent the last year filling in additional pieces of the puzzle, showing that Exxon, Chevron, Shell, and BP are knowingly fueling the climate crisis and lying about their commitment to solutions.

"It's time for the Department of Justice to engage and initiate actions to hold these bad faith polluters accountable for the catastrophic damage they have caused and the massive fraud they've perpetrated on the American people."

Background on Climate Accountability Lawsuits Against Big Oil:

Since 2017, the attorneys general of Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, and the District of Columbia, as well as 35 municipal governments in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Washington, and Puerto Rico, have filed lawsuits to hold major oil and gas companies accountable for deceiving the public about their products' role in climate change.

The Center for Climate Integrity (CCI) helps cities and states across the country hold corporate polluters accountable for the massive impacts of climate change.
