How We Work

Common Dreams is a U.S.-based nonprofit news outlet with an in-house newsroom reporting on the key issues of our time year-round. We do not accept submissions for news coverage or freelance reporting. However, we welcome opinion submissions for our Opinion page, where we publish timely and original guest essays, analyses, and op-eds with a progressive perspective daily.

We encourage contributors to familiarize themselves with our content and submission guidelines before sending work. Submissions that do not follow these guidelines will not be considered.

We are a small nonprofit and cannot pay for submissions. We assume all submissions are publication-ready and may make minor edits (typos or style adjustments) with your verification. Due to high volume, we cannot respond individually to every submission. Only a small portion of submissions can be published. If your submission is not published within a few days, it likely did not fit a timely or appropriate slot. Resubmissions are welcome.

Opinion Submission Guidelines

Submissions should be:

  • Unique, timely, and progressive
  • Original opinion or analysis
  • Appealing to a national and international audience
  • Written with authority on the subject
  • Concise: 800–1,100 words (exceptions may be considered)

Format

  • Submit single, final-draft articles only; no pitches, partial submissions, or multi-part articles.
  • Do not include HTML coding.
  • Include a suggested headline and subhead (editors have final say).
  • References/support material must be embedded hyperlinks; no footnotes or endnotes.

Submission Process

  • Send submissions as a shared Google Doc or Word document via email.
  • Email subject line: "Submission + Last Name(s) + Article Title or Subject"
  • Copy the article text into the body of the email in addition to the attachment.
  • If not previously published, include a short (1–2 sentence) bio and a recent square headshot (~250x250 pixels).

Editors

Additional Notes

  • All submissions are subject to editorial review, proofing, and possible headline changes.
  • Published work is released under a Creative Commons 3.0 license and may be republished and shared online.
  • Due to high volume, we cannot respond to questions about why specific submissions were not chosen.
