Fact-Checking Policy

Reporters must be precise with their words, headlines, and URLs. They must understand that words have power and act responsibly. In doing so, reporters must verify the information they gather. This includes identifying information such as names and positions, but also includes factual statements and accounts. Reporters conduct their own fact-checking using their own judgment guided by our ethics policy. Common Dreams will use fact-checkers in certain circumstances it deems warranted.

News is different from Opinion. In this age of rampant "fake news," we work hard to distinguish fact from rumor. We take our commitment to providing you with the facts, as we know them, with the seriousness and sincerity you deserve as an informed citizen.

We always do our best to separate News from Opinion and make that distinction clear. If you feel we have not done a good job separating News from Opinion on a particular story, we invite you to reach out to our editorial team with any issues you have regarding that separation, and we will research the issue and see if there are additional edits or ways we can address your concerns.
