IMF Extends Debt Relief for Poor Countries

Religious Development Group Releases Statement

WASHINGTON

Ahead of the IMF annual meetings, the IMF Executive Board extends debt payment relief for 24 low-income countries through January 10, 2022. Additional relief may be extended to April 13, 2022, if the IMF debt relief vehicle, the Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust has resources.

Eric LeCompte, Executive Director of the religious development group Jubilee USA Network and a United Nations finance expert who monitored IMF meetings since 2010, releases the following statement:

"Expanding debt relief for the poorest countries is urgently needed.

"The cancelled debt payments mean that needed funds can be directed to pandemic response.

"Since the coronavirus crisis began, we see more vulnerable countries seeking debt relief."

Jubilee USA Network is an interfaith, non-profit alliance of religious, development and advocacy organizations.
