This letter has nothing to do with the law. (Photo: BRENDAN SMIALOWSKIGetty Images)
I guess if you stay in this racket long enough, you get to see it all. Gaze in awe, now, at The Constitution According to Camp Runamuck.
Point One: The president can't be indicted for his crimes because there is a constitutional remedy for crimes in office.
Point Two: The constitutional remedy is illegitimate.
Owned, libtards!
For these reasons, President Trump and his Administration reject your baseless, unconstitutional efforts to overturn the democratic process. Your unprecedented actions have left the President with no choice. In order to fulfill his duties to the American people, the Constitution, the Executive Branch, and all future occupants of the Office of the Presidency, President Trump and his Administration cannot participate in your partisan and unconstitutional inquiry under these circumstances.
The letter goes on--for eight pages, so you know that El Caudillo del Mar-a-Lago didn't write the damn thing--to throw up every bit of Fox News-approved, wingnut-certified, nutball, quasi-legalistic hoodoo into the clear air. I found this line particularly amusing in light of recent revelations.
The decision as to who will be elected President in 2020 should rest with the people of the United States, exactly where the Constitution places it.
This absurd contention comes in the middle of a passage in the letter that is pure delusion. It even makes formal the manufactured notion that Rep. Adam Schiff's obvious paraphrase of the president*'s shakedown call with the Ukrainian president was an attempt to deceive the country. This was stupid when the Republicans began hollering about it in committee, and it's now become grandiose and stupid. Later, the letter goes on to yap irrelevantly--and falsely--about "continuing strong economic growth." This letter has nothing to do with the law. It's a MAGA rally draped in a toga.
Dear Common Dreams reader, The U.S. is on a fast track to authoritarianism like nothing I've ever seen. Meanwhile, corporate news outlets are utterly capitulating to Trump, twisting their coverage to avoid drawing his ire while lining up to stuff cash in his pockets. That's why I believe that Common Dreams is doing the best and most consequential reporting that we've ever done. Our small but mighty team is a progressive reporting powerhouse, covering the news every day that the corporate media never will. Our mission has always been simple: To inform. To inspire. And to ignite change for the common good. Now here's the key piece that I want all our readers to understand: None of this would be possible without your financial support. That's not just some fundraising cliche. It's the absolute and literal truth. We don't accept corporate advertising and never will. We don't have a paywall because we don't think people should be blocked from critical news based on their ability to pay. Everything we do is funded by the donations of readers like you. Will you donate now to help power the nonprofit, independent reporting of Common Dreams? Thank you for being a vital member of our community. Together, we can keep independent journalism alive when it’s needed most. - Craig Brown, Co-founder |
