All Oil and Gas Dependency Makes Us Less Safe

WASHINGTON

Following the debate of sanctioning Russian oil and gas, as well as the Biden administration potentially visiting Saudi Arabia to convince the petrostate to pump more oil, Varshini Prakash, Executive Director of Sunrise Movement, released the following statement:

"Our reliance on both Russian and Saudi oil and gas is a failure of American energy policy. Biden must break our dependence on these petrostates once and for all. As big oil continues to profit off corrupt petrostates, the people of Ukraine continue to be murdered in a brutal war that is funded in large part by oil and gas.

"How can anyone be surprised that fossil fuel baron Joe Manchin would want to extract more oil and gas here at home? For politicians like Joe Manchin, this was never about helping working families, but increasing their profit margins and lining the pockets of fossil fuel executives.

"If the U.S. really wants to defend human rights and democracy abroad, we need a just transition to renewable energy. Now is the time to rewrite the rules of international dependency on fossil fuels by negotiating a global clean energy plan that prioritizes human rights, democracy, and high labor standards. Biden must use our leverage as an international leader to lead this effort, prevent future petro-wars, and prevent oligarchs and dictators from profiting off the destruction of our planet, and ultimately the destruction of innocent lives."

This comes at a time when corporations, including oil and gas companies, continue to make record profits, causing sky high inflation for working people. Instead of passing climate legislation that will transition America to clean energy, Biden has authorized the release of 30 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Sunrise Movement is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.
