With Clock Running Out on Possible Senate Rules Change, Sinema Still Has a Chance to Show She's on the Right Side of History

WASHINGTON
Christina Harvey, Executive Director of Stand Up America, issued the following statement after Senator Kyrsten Sinema declared her opposition to lowering the filibuster's 60-vote threshold to pass voting rights legislation.
"Senator Sinema said she wants to preserve the filibuster to foster debate, not sow division. She neglected to mention that Senate Republicans have blocked debate on voting rights for an entire year by abusing this archaic, undemocratic rule. The only way to have a substantive debate and a vote on voting rights legislation that Senator Sinema says she supports is to change the Senate rules.
"The bipartisanship that Senator Sinema speaks of is a rare luxury for those whose freedom to vote isn't under threat. For voters of color, poor voters, and elderly voters being purged from the polls and required to jump through hoops to exercise their freedom to vote, this is about our most fundamental constitutional rights. What's more, lawmakers were forced to codify some of our most important constitutional amendments--like the Fourteenth and Fifteenth--without bipartisan support. American history has proven time and time again: When one party's objective is to suppress equal representation and the other's is to protect it, there is no bipartisan solution.
"Arizonans overwhelmingly support the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and they are counting on Senator Sinema to do the right thing and protect the freedom to vote. She is running out of time, but she can still show she's on the right side of history."
