Joe Manchin Has Betrayed Seniors

The following is a statement from

WASHINGTON

The following is a statement from Alex Lawson, Executive Director of Social Security Works, on Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) announcing his opposition to the Build Back Better Act:

"On Sunday, Senator Joe Manchin announced that he wants West Virginia seniors to keep paying outrageous prices for prescription drugs. He wants to force West Virginia seniors to live in nursing homes, where COVID is running rampant, instead of aging in their own homes. He wants to deny West Virginia seniors hearing aids.

Those aren't the words Manchin spoke. But by announcing his opposition to the Build Back Better Act, which would lower drug prices, fund home care, and expand Medicare, that is exactly what he said.

Shame on Senator Manchin for this disgusting betrayal of seniors in West Virginia and across the country. If Manchin thinks this announcement will take pressure off him, he is dead wrong. We are going to keep driving our billboard trucks across West Virginia and organizing West Virginia seniors to demand that Manchin work for his voters instead of corporate donors. We will never stop until Manchin votes for the Build Back Better Act."

Social Security Works' mission is to: Protect and improve the economic security of disadvantaged and at-risk populations; Safeguard the economic security of those dependent, now or in the future, on Social Security; and Maintain Social Security as a vehicle of social justice.
